Naomi Nosonovsky

Since this thread has gone off-topic, may I please ask few questions about this forum usage.

1) How can I see replies in the chronological order E.g. I only want to see the latest replies but I can not figure out how to do it.

2) Can I turn off Alerts for good I often forget to uncheck them when posting a message.

3) Why most of the messages appear in a very small unreadable font and how can this be made better

4) Why quite often the latest replies do not appear for quite a long time, as it was few days ago

Thanks a lot in advance.

1) How can I see replies in the chronological order E.g. I only want to see the latest replies but I can not figure out how to do it.

At bottom left of the page there is a "Forum Options" dialog

Forum Options
View By Attribute:
Sort: in order
Date Filter:
Topic Filter:

>>2) Can I turn off Alerts for good I often forget to uncheck them when posting a message.

YOu can see which threads you are subscribed to by clicking on the "My Threads" link and then the "Subscriptions" tab. You can unsubscribe from individual threads there.

>> 3) Why most of the messages appear in a very small unreadable font and how can this be made better

This may be related to your browser setting. The default size ("NORMAL") is, I think, Arial 12-point

>> 4) Why quite often the latest replies do not appear for quite a long time, as it was few days ago

Again, this may be your settings for cacheing. Try using "Refresh" or closing and re-opening the browser.

Normally responses appear within a few seconds of posting - but I often have to use Refresh to see them.

Thanks. On the question two I do not want to subscribe at all. Don't want to have Alert dialog pop up since clicking Ok always gives an error and I always press Cancel.

3) I'm using IE7 without any special settings.

4) Not sure what happened two days ago but luckily the problem doesn't not re-appear.

See the FAQ Link (Upper Right Hand corner) it includes information on how to configure/change your personal settings and profile

Craig Berntson

There is currently no way to turn off Alerts permanently. I asked about this during the MVP Summit and was told "it's coming soon".

Re: Forum Usage

Naomi Nosonovsky

Thanks to both of you. I will keep unchecking this checkbox <g>

Re: Forum Usage

Naomi Nosonovsky

Ok, the same problem re-appears Sad I do not see the latest replies. I'll try to close this window and re-open again.

Re: Forum Usage

Naomi Nosonovsky

test.

I only see replies when I post something.

The forums don't work for me today and Tracy H has the same problem.

I think, something is definitely wrong with the forums, may be not this one in particular, but all MSDN forums. But it definitely make them very hard to use.

Re: Forum Usage

Naomi Nosonovsky

BTW, I sent you an e-mail when I first encountered a problem with the forums (as I learned it was a problem with replication, discussed in one of the forums). Did you get my e-mail

Thanks again.

Is this addresssed to me If so, I have never received an E-Mail on this, or any other subject, from you.

Re: Forum Usage

Naomi Nosonovsky

Oh, I see. I sent you an e-mail when I first encountered the same problem and was wondering, why you're not replying. I sent it from my work's e-mail address, perhaps it is not always working, since I also sent an e-mail to Frank Dietrich and didn't get a reply from him either.

Just in case check your SPAM mails, may be my message went there. I'm not going to re-send it, no point now.

Re: Forum Usage

Naomi Nosonovsky

One more question, if I may. Quite often when I read someone's question and I see a good reply by someone I press the button Yes on the question Was this post helpful. Does it have any effect or only thread originators can mark responses helpful or not If that's the case I should not waste my time pressing this button.

>> Does it have any effect or only thread originators can mark responses helpful or not

The short answer is that I don't know what that does. However, now that you ask, I will try and find out....

Incidentally, the 'forum problems' you keep encountering are caused by one of two things:

[1] A Moderator has deleted your post (If you register your E-Mail address in your profile you will get an E-Mail when this occurs explaining why it was deleted)

[2] IE7 is cacheing the page and nopt refreshing it - even if you ask. Try exiting from your browser and re-entering the site. It should force a 'real' refresh and you should then see your post.

Re: Forum Usage

Should I use the e-mail I used for creating a NET passport I actually don't check this e-mail at all, it is not my primary one. I can give you my e-mail and actually already gave in another thread, but I don't want it to be open for the public. How can I set my profile so moderators will know my e-mail but not everyone

BTW, don't recall if I marked this particular post as an answer, though I think I might.

Re: Forum Usage

AndyKr

You set your E-Mail in your Profile. However, as noted in the Profile page....

Display E-Mail:

This will be visible to all forum members. If you enter your real e-mail address, you will likely receive unwanted messages (spam) because spammers regularly gather e-mail addresses from public communties. We highly recommend that you use a modified version of your e-mail address. For example, if an e-mail address were someone@example.com, we would recommend modifying it to someone@example.com.(donotspam).

THe problem is that if the e-mail address you enter is NOT genuine, then you do not receive automated E-Mail message notifications when things happen on the forum. If you do enter a real E-Mail address, then you might get spam. You pay your money and take your choice I guess. Sorry that there is no easy answer but I am not responsible for the design or implementation of the forum software.

If you wish to make suggestions for improvements in the MSDN Forums there is a place to do so (the "Suggestions for Forums Forum") here:

PS> You DID mark it as answered.
