    - uniqueness of index <insert index name> is violated. Hi, i'm making batch changes to several of our foxpro databases using C# and ado.net. Basically i am consolidating many lookups into the same key across multiple databases. After moving them to the proper id and deleting unused id's, i go and find out from all of the databases what lookups they have, compile them into a uniquelist and then make sure that every database has that row. My problem is that once my consolidation happens and it deletes unused rows, i'm trying to add rows that use to be there back in because they're part of my 'master list' and i need them even though they aren't being used... i then get this error even though the record has been deleted already. example id 9060 was not being used, i first go through and delete all codes that aren't being used in related tables (to clear out all of the junk --and unfortunately in some cases codes i need to keep around as well) 9060 was deleted I consolidate all of the codes i go to my master list and try to add 9060 again with it's proper description (one that matches the master list), and i get the uniqueness error. Now, i could go back and rewrite the whole architecture of my software to support this 'bug ' but i'm hoping someone knows a way to rebuild the indexes programmatically (in ado.net) so i don't have to.     - What fires first Init() or Load() The selection in the combobox changes the contents of a grid on the form. I had hoped to populate the grid upon opening the form, and then let the user change the combobox list to change/filter the contents in the grid using a SQL-Select. I had thought it was good practice to have all tables open from within the Load event. I can make a separte SQL method as you mentioned and call it from the init event o fthe form and the InteractivChange event. That way I have only 1 statement populating the grid.     - VFP7 crashes with "Fatal error: Exception code=C0000005" during data import from Excel I'm using the following statements for reading from a multiple-sheet Excel file: CREATE CURSOR Main (ID N(3,0), SUBID N(3,0), DESC C(60), D C(128), E C(10), F C(10), G C(10), H C(10), I C(10), J C(10), K C(10), L C(10), M C(10), N C(10), O C(10), P C(10), Q C(10) ) APPEND FROM (cFile) TYPE XL5 SHEET "cSheet_n" with cSheet_n = sheet names of the current spreadsheet. The tables had been saved as Excel5.0 workbooks. Typically 100 rows are being read per sheet, typically 5 to 10 sheet per file in total. If the table is somewhat larger or contains more commenting text within the columns E (from which I read 10 chars only), the procedure tends to crash, but astonishingly this isn'z really reproducible (sometimes on the 1st sheet, sometimes on the 4th only)! I tried out with XL8 instead of XL5 -> no difference. If I replaced all formula in the sheet by the values, it behaved better, but not clearly stable (still crashing sometimes). I have one FoxPro program, used for over 7 years. and still have the database - reinstalling the OS only affected the boot WINDOWS partition. But the FoxPro program, which I can access, will not run - cannot find a required DLL. Where do I go for help in this kind of situation.     - Outlook contact details Thankyou all very much for your responses. Naomi, I'm afraid that link pretty much replicates what I am doing already. The trouble is that the additional properties that I wish to obtain do not appear to be properties of the AddressEntry object. DNI and Tamar - I have tried the contact object too but it still does not seems to have any of the relevant properties. When I run Tamar's code I get the following Program Error on the line cFirst = .FirstName : "OLE error code 0x800200006: Unknown name." When I look at the oContact object it does not have any of the specified properties such as .FirstName, .LastName or .PrimaryTelephoneNumber. I've included a complete list of its properties and methods below in case this helps.     - Change of Class Library ... There is a class in UT Downloads by Glen Domeracki that does what you're attempting to do. Here is a link to it http://www.universalthread.com/wconnect/wc.dll 2,54,33,9955 which works only after you log into this site. Here is the class description: NewClass is designed to safely change classes in forms and classlibraies. I wrote it years ago after having made many "BASE CLASS" mistakes with VFP3.0. It allows you to select the form which you need to change, and then displays a list of classes used in that form. You then select a classlib which will be used for replacement classes. When you select one of the classes in the form class list the library list will display a list of classes with the same base class as that which is selected in the form class list. There is a checkbox on this form which allows you to optionally list all library classes rather than matching base classes only. After having selected a class to change you may then select an item in the library list. When the ADD button is clicked this change is placed into the Queue list. You may repeat this as many times as you like to change multiple classes in one session. You may also remove items from the queue. After making all selections you can press the apply button and the original files are backed up with extensions like t00 - t99, x00 - x99, After the files are successfuly backed up the queued changes are applied, the lists updated and you are allowed to continue.     - ODBC Driver I'd best start this thread by admitting I know less than nothing about FoxPro so dummy answers would be appreciated. I have a customer who is connecting software I have written to a foxpro database via ODBC. The customer has created a System DSN using the Microsoft Visual Foxpro Driver v6.00.8167 that points to a "free table directory". My software simply runs a query on a table (Details.dbf). The software works fine until the number of records hits 10K+. At this stage each single query (which only returns one record) takes at least 5 seconds to execute. At first thought I figured the peformance was down to a lack of indexes on the table. They have since added several indexes with no improvement in performance. My suspicion is that the ODBC driver is not using the indexes. Can anybody shine any light on this and suggest possible solutions to this extremely poor performance Tag: A couple questions about the OLE DB data provider

    - Performace issues over VPN / Terminal services. Alen, Re: The Printers -- Terminal RDP really doesn't like anything other than parallel port LPT1 printers. You can do a registry hack to enable the RDP to recognize USB Dot4 and Network printers ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302361 ). Problem with this is that you now need to install the printer driver for each printer that may connect to your terminal server. May not be a problem with a small amount users, but as you add people, the number of printers you may need to support will grow. A very good, dependable alternative is Screwdrivers V4 byTricerat ( www.tricerat.com ) -- a small installation on your server, and an even smaller on the client. So what are you really asking Is there a method called MyMethod If there is who is the owner of that method (a form method, custom object method etc). IOW where do you really write your code If you mean your form has a method called 'MyMethod' then there wouldn't be any "function" there (you can't create functions within methods - and in practice method, event, function, procedure are same things unless you're a purist on terminology). Let me give some background: I am trying to work with a Foxpro database that is the backend to one of our providers programs. I am not that familiar with Foxpro databases. I noticed that none of the tables in the database seem to have any keys defined (maybe this was a limitation of Foxpro when the database was designed. It seems that this was developed with Foxpro 5.0) I am trying to work with the database using an ORM tool that requires the definition of a key (not necessarily on the database but at least some field that will distinguish it as a unique identifier) Many of the tables in the database have a field called 'recno' (which I would assume would be somewhat of a unique ID) but all of the values were '0'. Maybe this field was never being updated I tried to originally update this field but was receiving this error so I thought that maybe this was a 'read only' field or something (again, back to my in-experience with Foxpro databases). So I added a new column of type 'Numeric' called 'recordnumber' which I was going to use as the unique field. The only issue was to populate it. This is where I am receiving this error. Every time that my program accesses this table I want to first check it using ADO to make sure that each record has an incremented value and then use custom objects with my ORM tool to acually read/manipulate/display the data within the program. With that in mind let me reply to your comments: 1) The WHERE clause is so that I only get the records which do not have a unique ID yet. Upon opening of the database for the first time, none of the records have a unique ID so the value's will be 1, 2, 3....N. In subsequent openings, I will check for the Max 'recordnumber' and use that as my starting point for the RecordNumber field. I had edited this code out for simplicity but be assured that I am checking for a max value and incrementing accordingly. 2) Hmm... I guess I was un-aware that a recordset required a key to update the database. This is exactly why I was using ADO because the tables did not have any keys defined, with no column or group of columns that could be used to create a unique identifier. If this is the case then is there any way to update the database with some other technology by simply going row by row and changing a specific value Thanks for your help!     - Funny behavior of alignments in report designer. Hi; Not sure if I'm missing something here but here's the situation: I have a report with some numeric values in the detail band. For some reason, although in the report the headings and the numeric values are both nicely aligned to the right, once I run the report all headings are 1 char too much to the right. The format of the numeric values are all 'numeric' and no more options selected. I've also tried a few fonts and nothing helps. Has anyone experienced this Thanks.     - Need help with report expression And here's a little trick for checking parens (though I need much less now that VFP shows me what's inside when I close a paren): Start at the left hand side of your expression and count. Go up one for each left paren and down one for each right. If you don't wind up at 0, then you don't have matched parens. (With the original expression in this thread, you'd end up at -1, meaning one right paren too many.) As long as something terminates the wait state, execution will continue through the main program to the end and when it finishes, VFP shuts down. If you feel the need to use some terminating command, make it RETURN rather than QUIT, so that when you test in the IDE, VFP doesn't shut down.     - Too many report copies Hi, I have a VFP9 app where the users can check off multiple reports to print (often 4-6) and then set via a screen the number of copies each (often 3) and then just say "Print them" (this is all VFP code). To handle this and free up their machine immediately, I have passed off report generation and printing to a server. This works most of the time but regularly the users complain that they get the wrong number of copies or even worse, they get a humungous amount of copies of one of the reports (usually until the printer runs out of paper e..g they asked for 3 copies but they end up getting 50 copies). The printers are HP 2430n printers and I have tried a) the newest HP 2430n PCL6 driver b) the latest HP 2430n PCL5e driver c) older drivers d) the HP 2430n PS (Postscript) driver. And so far, none have solved the problem. It seems like the server is getting hung up on a job and just keeps resending it.     - report generation i've ben trying to solve this thing for quite some time now, can't seem to figure it out. here's the scenario i'm working with 4 tables. table1 - personal data (first name, middle name, last name, file no.) table2 - stations/branches of the company (division1, division2, division3, file no.) table3 - physical exam (date_evaluation, examiner, date_evaluation_submitted, file no.) table4 - psychological exam(date_evaluation, examiner, date_evaluation_submitted, file no.) the file no. in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th tables are based on the file no. from the first table. the user input will be 1. option1 : as of date (will be compared with date_evaluation of physical exam) option2 : period covered - from date a to date b (will be compared with date_evaluation of physical exam) 2. option1 : Alphabetical option2 : by division it would have been easier to use sql query but i can't seem to insert the values in a cursor. i need to grab the data from the cursor for the report. here's how it goes... user will choose from the first options (this will decide which data will be retrieved) the second options will determine the order by which data will be displayed. hope you can help me out guys... thank you. Hello! I'm looking to access a VFP database from an ASP.NET web application and I have a couple questions about the OLE DB data provider.

1) Can I use the latest VFP 9.0 OLE provider with a VFP 6.0 free table directory Should I expect any problems

2) Does the OLE DB provider have any dependencies on VFP E.g. could I install it on a machine without VFP and still be able to manipulate my data files

1) Yes you can and you should use VFPOLEDB driver.

2) Yes you can. Formerly it had dependancy on VFP license wise. Now it's publicly available.

Hi!

Just to add to what Cetin said, the OLE DB data provider is fully backward compatible with all versions of Fox tables including those created with FoxPro for DOS.

You're welcome. BTW I suggest using ObjectDataSource, though it's not code free and you might need to skim chapters about using an ObjectDataSource, it gives you more control.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've used ObjectDataSource previously with my SQL Server projects, so I'm already familiar with the multi-tiered approach. It's definately the way to go.
