Bonjour!

My father (pc newbie) tried to run VFP9 under Win XP sp2. He had many old floppy made in the late 80s under a 386 pc; these files are named dbt, dbf, etc and his objective was to work with them again.

When he tried to open one .dbt (he supposed it was a file but it was a folder without any extension to it.) file in VFP9 few days ago, VFP9 opened and freeze with the name of the folder (lexique1) superimposed over the FoxPro logo. (Error 52 written somewhere)

Since that time, everytime he wants to open VFP, everything freeze at start. He tried to uninstall and reinstall VFP9, clearing all the folders etc but nothing can be done to reverse it; VFP9 always open the "lexique1" folder over the VFP9 logo and the program freeze. Bizarre...

Any hints by you pros are welcome since the only other thing he would do is to restore XP before he installed VFP9.

Merci for your time.

Normaly vfp is able to open a dbt file (if is not from act!).You may try to open files after you copied from floppy on hdd to be sure the files are ok. May be is better to use import menu in order to open them.

You may try to delete all vfp files from "Documents and Settings", or try to create a new user with administrative rights and try to install it....

merci DNI.

My dad tried the first option and deleted the D&S/vfp folder but the hang is still there.

He then opened a new user setting and will install VFP9 there later today. I'll let you know.

He told me that even if the VFP freeze at start, he has access to the command box but have no idea what to put there to correct the problem. Bizarre thing is that VFP can still "read/see" the lexique1 folder even if no more files are on the HD...

Voila!

Later.

If you have access to menu>Tools>Options you may restore defaults.

You may also run setup.exe with option repair (you may need original cd) from:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9\Visual FoxPro 9.0 Professional - English

Have him search for files named Foxuser.* and rename or delete them.

First, to Mrs Tamar & DNI & all the others, merci for taking your time to help my dad.

Bizarrely, my father uninstalled VFP9 again AND also deleted all the files/folders (including the registry keys) and when the program was back again, things seems to be normal and fine. We would probably never know the point(s) to all this (but as pc nuts we already know that these things can happen...Wink.

Second, as I wrote, my dad (72) is newbie to the new interface of Win XP sp2 and VFP 9; he worked many years ago under Dbase4 where he made his files for a "work in progress" book about phytotheray's herbs in Africa &and their use for curing diseases. The database he wanted to do is for the good reasons.

If someone here knows the best book about how to run VFP9 (from basic I mean), I'll be glad to get the name and try to get the book for him. If someone has an used or new version for sale, I'll be open for a deal (we live in Quebec, Canada)

Again, merci for your time and glad to read from you.

Merci.

I don't think there are any VFP books aimed at end-users or power users, because VFP (from version 3 on) is really a developer's product.

If he just wants to work interactively, he'll probably find what he needs in the Help. If he's interested in writing programs with it, then he should look at "The Fundamentals" by Whil Hentzen (http://www.hentzenwerke.com/catalog/fund6.htm). Though it was originally written for VFP 6, it's still quite applicable to VFP 9.

First, merci for trying to help me and my dad...

Originally, my father worked under Dbase4 and, if I remember well, was trying to get a kind of index of diseases vs plants vs curing methods under that program; what he wanted to get was, for instance, a result for "cancer" which he typed under Dbase4 and then get answers like the plants and curing methods applying to cancer.

If I am reading it well, he wants a data base program that can answer rapidly any question about his "African Pharmacology Compendium" data so people who need it can, just like we do when we ask Google lets say.

I guess thats what he wants to continue now under VFP9.

The question(s) is: is VFP9 the right program for him for doing that

Which could be the best way of handling his project

merci for your time.

ps: I am not a newbie but programming is not my cup of tea; I am more into video and audio editing myself. I am working hard at getting my dad over the internet so he can make his own questions!!!!

If I understand correctly, VFP is certainly capable of doing the kind of thing you're talking about. So the question is whether your father has any programming experience or wants to learn programming.
