    - SQL Select using variables I would like to create a SQL SELECT statement in VFP9 but instead of specifying the table explicitly I would like it to be read from a variable. For example: TABLE_NAME = "table_to_select" SELECT * FROM TABLE_NAME; INTO CURSOR tbl_cur and when I execute the above I would actually like this to happen: SELECT * FROM table_to_select INTO CURSOR tbl_cur Any ideas on how to do this I have not been able to find a solution with VFP9 help or within the forums.     - Server Name? Dearest Friends, FoxMasters, Geeks and/or venerable MVPs, Looking at Sys() commands, etc. I can't seem to be able to 'display' a name for the LAN Server(s). Sys(5) works for the "Drive" of course, but Sys(5) fails to be meaningful for a Server Name : ...eg. "DellDimension4300", "Martha", "Ivan", "MyLanServer", etc. I've searched help files repeatedly to just find a way to display the lan-server name, but failed.     - REPLACE command help wanted If not mastering counter intuitive VFP object manipulation was not hard enough in the past until I finally got a handle of it, now trying to do it from OleDb .NET code is like moving through heavy water--it is 10 times more difficult. I thought I reached the promised land when I finally made PACK work but my joy was premature. Now INSERT gives me the same trouble. I really prefer to do REPLACE (as well as other commands) by writing a SP where the commands are located and storing them permanently at the DBs. That would be my preferred choice. t would allow me to reuse some of my old code which contains thousands such commands. I hoped that I would be able to write a simple SP and call some of my old .prg files from it. This is what Cetin has said should work. I now kind of doubt this although I haven't tried it yet. OK, this is one SP that gives me exceptions. This code obviously a very poor choice since the delimiter ' (single quote mark) can and eventually will appear as a part of the memo text itself. I just wanted to prove the principle. It did not work either. I also tried FOR instead of WHILE. Actually the numeric_id field is the primary key and it does not matter. There should be only one record. I think most of it RTF formatting. I typed in a few characters mindlessly. I think they are the ones highlighted. This is where I stand. I you want to get rid of me, please help me resolve my few remaining problems and I will be out of here, hopefully for good If no way around the problem is found then my default option would be to use the following sequence of commands: DELETE the sought for record (it has worked), PACK the Table (works), INSERT a similar record (it has worked as a stand alone operation) with a new MEMO field but all the other field contents saved and reloaded. That may not work either. I noticed that OleDb does not seem to like when I do DELETE , PACK and INSERT immediately after that. It wants the app to be closed first but I haven't studied it in detail.     - Top level windows are not activated VisualFox 9 I made an plication and I set all the windows with top level show and _sreeen.visible=.f. but when I start the application the main window is in the front an it is not activ. I have to click on it to activate it or if there is a nother application runing like explorer or other my window is minimizetr or in the bootm of the windows and it is not activ.     - CONFIG in top-level application Hi, I am using VFP6.0. Acouple of questions about application creation. 1) I notice a config.fpw is created in the progs area by the application builder, which is presumable just for setting up config for this application. If i modify the fpw by putting a 'Command = XXX' line in it and generating the application then it doesn't seem to run the command when the app starts. Similarly using the _STARTUP = "XXX.prg" doesn't seem to run the prog specified either. In both cases the application starts to the desktop and goes straight to the menu system and waits for user input.     - VFP9 application in same network with email server & VOIPs Hello All. I am currently having a VFP9 application shared in a network that also include VOIP telephony & email servers. Up to 30 users in all. The VFP9 "exe" file is only 3Mb and the database files totalling 5Mb. It seems that the VFP9 application runs awfully slow at times while the others runs fine.     - Visual Foxpro Grid is hiding something from me :( ok ! I have a form with a pageframe and two pages. i have a grid on page 1 for sales_items. i have two MySql tables 'sales' and 'sales_items'. i have set the allowaddnew property of the grid to .T. . try to add a new record to the grid and save it (it works fine) now on the grid press the down arrow more than 4 times so that it will look like ur adding more than 4 new records, and then run the update on both tables and walah ! the grid loses its data, but if you browse the table using a button or something, you will see that the data is actually still there but the grid wont show it. here is a sample of how i requery my child table. I can delete files with the "ERASE *.txt" command but I don't know how to delete the subfolders which themselves contain files. Also, I don't know in advance the name of the subfolders as they are created by an application. So the names can be anything!     - RLOCK on a DBF file on a Windows Vista Shaded Folder Hi, I have problems on some functions [at first RLOCK()] when i try to access on a DBF file on a Vista Shared Folder from another Vista PC. If I try to access or execute Rlock() function, from XP on Vista or from Vista to XP, i have no problems. When i try to execute Rlock() on this file from Vista i have an "Error Reading File" only when another used already use this file.     - Speed with CALCULATE I apologize in advance if my explanation and questions do not use the language and conventions of programming professionals, I'm a self-taught amateur. I've used VFP 6.0 successfully for many years and written many programs that have worked well but they certainly lack the sophistication and elegance that professionals would produce. BACKGROUND: 6 tables are related via a common index The tables each have different numbers of records with the number of records ranging from roughly 500,000 to 800,000 and, when the project is complete, the record size will be roughly 50% larger. The program I am writing about has one function - to calculate various values based on various subsets of the data within the 6 related tables. The calculations that are needed are based on numeric fields located in only 1 table but that table and the other 5 tables have various fields that are needed to create the filters and the subsequent subsets. The actual filters that are used to define the subsets are kept in a field in a 7th table and each filter is "grabbed" sequentially within a SCAN/ENDSCAN loop acting on the 7th table. The filter information is then STOREd in a character variable. The filter parameters generally contain 1 to 15 fields though some are longer. Because there are literally several thousand filters that have to be processed, I'm trying to come up with code that will run the fastest. Currently, after creating each subset with a SET FILTER TO &cFilterFromTable7 command, the following calculations, among others, are processed (the other math functions within the program run very rapidly - the Foxpro CALCULATE command when filters are used seems to be causing what I perceive to be a slowdown): CALCULATE cnt(), sum(TABLE1.FIELD1), sum(TABLE1.FIELD2), sum(TABLE1.FIELD3), sum(TABLE1.FIELD4) TO nTotalRecords, nField1sum, nField2sum, nField3sum, nField4sum calc cnt() to nField1_positive for TABLE1.FIELD1 > 0 calc cnt() to nField2_positive for TABLE1.FIELD2 > 0 calc cnt() to nField3_positive for TABLE1.FIELD3 > 0 Because the tables are so large and filters inherently slow down the CALCULATE command I'm trying to create code that runs through the tables the fewest number of times but I haven't thought of way to combine the 3 statements immediately above that provide counts of the positive values of the 3 fields. Only 99.5% of the time when FIELD1 is positive, FIELD2 and FIELD3 are positive Only 99.5% of the time when FIELD2 is positive, FIELD3 is positive QUESTIONS: 1. Is there are way to combine those 3 statements somehow or is there some other, better way to accomplish the goal of getting those counts 2. I understand that filters slow down the speed of the CALCULATE command considerably. Is using filters (as I currently am) better and/or faster than using a FOR /Expression with the CALC commands 3. Are there any tricks regarding the order within a filter or the use of indexes that can increase speed 4. The typical filter I am working with creates a subset that is usually well under 10,000 records, often under 1,000 records and rarely over 200,000 records. Is there some threshhold for the size of the subset that makes a difference on how best to proceed Would I be better off having 2 procedures, one for under the threshhold and one over the threshhold 5. What other consideration that I don't know to ask about have to be considered (I'm working with as fast a machine as I can afford and it is reasonably fast by today's standards. It is running XP PRO SP2 which is updated regularly. There is 75 gigs of free hard drive space on a 7200 RPM drive. I've got 2 gigs of RAM and I've turned off everything that might be working in the background, including anti-Virus software, that might use resources and interfere with the speed of calculations. The machine is not connected to a network or the internet. Because of some rather dramatic memory-related crashes when I first started testing, I think I must run the program with the following: SYS(3050, 1, 512*1024*1024) and SYS(3050, 2, 512*1024*1024) because it tends to crash periodically without those statements and hasn't yet crashed with them. ) 6.     - VFP9 - Windows Vista - proble with writing in ProgramData folder Hello, I have application lately moved from VFP8 to VFP9. As it is recomended for Windows Vista, I have program files installed in "Program Files" folder. There's no any write operations to this folder. DBF files are installed into "ProgramData" Windows Vista special folder. I tested it on my Vista test machine with UAC turned on and it works fine. It works fine also on account without administative rights. Unfortuantelly, I have a very big problem because a lot of people using this application on Vista is unable to use it because of write error to DBF files. For example, they get error " Cannot update the cursor MY_DATA, since it is read-only" when I try to UPDATE my_data.dbf table (table installed in ProgramData subfolder as I mentioned before). There is a chance that this is not the forum where I will ultimately get an answer since I do not know where the root of the problem is but still I am asking for everyone's attempt to brainstorm. It is actually a continuation of the previous notorious PACK <tableName> thread. Since I felt that I ran into a stonewall I devised a DEVIOUS (!) plan to crack the problem. It appears to have worked but as always VFP has many nasty surprises in store and this is one of them. This is my plan. I set up a BLANK database: blankDb, no tables just one stored procedure in it. I think I am on the way to the final resolution. This scheme opens a foreign" database (ostensibly exclusively, but this statement is in fact ignored--the exclusivity here is not really needed though). It then runs a SP (shown above). It appears the SP did run or attempted to run at least. It did not complain about any exclusivity, since it is almost as running this code from a Command Window. But it ran out of memory!!! Which memory Why I don't get the same error when I run this code (many, many times) from my CW Is it something in the buffer between VFP and C# ,NET app Is there a parameter in VFP which I can try to influence, perhaps adding some lines to this SP Please please help.     - Filtering records in grids I have a grid and a combobox placed on a page of a pageframe. The grid successfully shows the required data from a table. The combobox is used to filter the data on the table. I have placed the following code in the interactive change of the combobox. m.cProjType = THIS.value SELECT tmpProjData SET FILTER TO tmpProjData.ProjType = m.cProjData THISFORM.upgf1.page1.ugrid1.refresh This code successfully filters the data in the grid. If at some stage later the grid gets the focus, i.e. a mouse click, an error message appears "Variable 'cProjType' cannot be found" and all the records appear in the grid again. You may check connection string, network and you may try to install the last version for odbc driver...
