I have a BS, Physics from St. Joseph's College (Phila), MS, Physics from Brown Univ (Providence, RI), and a Ph D in Physiology & Biophysics from Univ of Vermont (Burlington, VT). I did a post-doctoral fellowship in neuroscience at the Univ of Pennsylvania. After my MS degree, I worked for a couple of years with IBM in semiconductor technology development in Vermont. I was an Assistant Professor at Beaver College in Glenside, PA for several years teaching Anatomy & Physiology, and Computer Science. While teaching, I was doing computer consulting on the side. I finally decided that computer consulting was more fun, and gave up teaching entirely. The general theme of my career has been the use of computers in science, engineering, and medicine. I've had an opportunity to work in a lot of different fields (the advantages of being a Physics major). In college I worked for a year in a work-study program at NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center. That is where I first learned to program. We were using computers to simulate proposed launches to determine the best parameters for getting successful orbits. My master's thesis was a magnetic resonance study of the structure of glass. Part of that involved using computers to simulate the measured spectra. At IBM, I was involved in characterizing semiconductor processing techniques that were coming out of the development labs. Part of that involved computer simulations of the experimental measurements. At the Univ of Vermont, I did research that involved electrical recordings from single brain cells. I used a DEC PDP-8 computer to completely control the experiments, and also computer simulation to model the results. My consulting work as been in the area of medical applications, mostly in the field of Biomechanics and Podiatry. I am also part-inventor of a system for measuring human gait: GaitMat II. Setting up OLEDB is not hard but it is not trivial if you're not using VFP8 or 9 which have support for cursoradapters. However there is no relation in your data sample for a join so I don't know what is the logic behind making "penang" as destination for product A01.     - ADO and NULL in VFP tables When I use the AddNew() method of a recordset the new record has all the fields set to .NULL. Unfortunately the tables I am accessing do not allow NULL values in the fields. Can you tell me please is there a simple way to change this behaviour of the recordset so that the fields are set to empty values instead such as "", 0, {} etc Otherwise I am guessing that I would have to write a routine of my own that changes any null values that haven't been set by the client. At the moment when I call the Update() method of the recordsetit throws a pretty general exception saying something went wrong. I am guessing that it is because of the NULLs. As a bit of background I am trying to use ADO to access VFP native tables so that I can easily use the recordsets as business entities that can be passed between my classes without having to specify dozens of parameters in the method calls. For now, I can successfuly extract data from SQL, display it in FoxPro Form (using OLE object); or import data from Excel, then save it into SQL server (thanks to Rick Strahl , http://www.west-wind.com/presentations/foxunicode/foxunicode.asp ). But then, I stuck. When I try to extract data from SQL, then export them to Excel, I always get a lot of strange mark instead of my Chinese, Japanese or Arabic data shown in SQL server.     - Proper practice - using class properties in forms/reports. I built such classes for my search form. The parent class has some base methods, one of them to return Where expression as a string. Each subclass has this method modified. So, when I needed Search functonality I just placed few subclasses on the form, set properties and in form's method concatenated Where expression from these criterion objects. That's the basic idea, my form didn't even need to know specifics, such as Start/End dates, the validation was also built in. If you want send me tomorrow an e-mail, I'll send you this classlibrary. I am not technically talented in any way. I am a writer and a painter. I often cruise this forum to try to learn things from you folks. I sometimes have a hard time getting around the niche language but I am very good at researching some of the terms you use.

I told you all that so you would take it easy on me if you answer this question.

I would like to be able to dictate material to be typed up and edited later. It would save me an amazing amount of time as well as make it easier for me to record ideas. Except for writing programs, (talking text not programming) my system is pretty basic. Windows XP w/media player.

Can anyone tell me if this is possible and how I could accomplish it

You can use Microsoft Office MS Word it has Speech recognition

for that goto the Tools in the Menu and Select Speech
1st it will train itself to recognize your speech

there after start dictating it works
