i found a way of shaping the form at
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa289517(VS.71).aspx
but it's not working for me and i don't know why
i have VB 2005
my picture for the background image has a red circle with a black background
my transperency is set to black
the background image layout is set to none
i also set the form's back color to black (is that what i'm doing wrong , if it is then what color are you supposed to set it to )

so can some one please help me out in what i'm doing wrong or any other sugestions in how to change the formshape

I tried what you were doing and got the same results. So I went back to the article you cited and notes the warning they gave about the screen's resolution producing unpredictable results at higher than 24-bit...

Note Monitors set to a color depth of greater than 24-bit can display problems with certain parts of the form not being transparent, despite setting of the TransparencyKey property. To avoid this problem, ensure that the monitor's color depth is set to less than 24-bit in the Display control panel. When developing applications that feature this transparency, keep in mind that you will have to make your users aware of this issue.

I set my monitor to 16-bit and it suddenly worked. Is uspect that is your problem. That's a pain, eh
