I am gettin this too. I have my site split to an internal windows authentication site (where the explorer view on the doc library works fine) and an external forms based auhentication site (where I get the above error).

Mike,

I'm fairly certain that you're not going to be able to get around using "Explorer View" on sites which use Forms-based authentication, simply because opening a list in Explorer view involves passing "control" of your SharePoint data to the Windows shell -- which natively has no support for "forms-based authentication;" instead, it needs a kerberos token to authenticate the user and maintain permission sets. It's also the reason that users with Vista/IE7 are having trouble now (the whole "Open this site in Windows Explorer" functionality falls in the same umbrella).

In short, if you're not using Windows Authentication, you're not going to get the Explorer view's functionality.

We're having the same problem but this seems to be only present when accessing within the portal server itself (Windows Server 2003). Client access using XP or vista does not yield the same problem. Any insights

I do NOT believe this is a forms-based authentication problem. We use forms-based authentiction and we dont' have this problem normally. We do have one user who is seeing this error and I'm investigating the issue but he is one of several thousand users.

I have heard significant problems with Vista/IE7 and using the drop-downs for 'edit in microsoft xxx' -

it would seem that Vista/IE7 would work cleanly with a SP 2007 site but evidently not -

We had this problem after the migration from SPS2003 to MOSS 2007, and it seems that it is a rights problem.

The user had Design rights, but needed Contributer Rights

After changing the problem was solved
