There are some issues I've got with using a MOSS 2007 Wiki for our internal technical knowledge base. Mainly we can't really modify the create new article page. Because of this I'm thinking I'll go with a custom list - just as our previous KB was in SPS2003.

My question is... what would be the benefit of using the wiki over a custom list Sure, I'll have to recreate some of the things like the display page, and people won't be able to drop a web part on an article. Other than those things I can't think of much the wiki can do that a custom list can't.

Any general thoughts or comments on this subject Curious to hear what others think.

There's absolutely nothing that a wiki can do that you can't achieve through the design of a highly specialized custom list. But a wiki is going to take you 3/4 of the way home right from the start. The great thing about the wiki is that it's so easy to edit, and it supports some of the standard wiki syntax right out of the box. So it's much easier to create a categorical view of the kb for users who've got no real web-designing talent.

Of course, you might also want to avoid re-inventing the wheel, when others have already laid the groundwork for you.

Looks like a great web part there!

I guess my main beef with the new wiki feature is that modifying the new article page is difficult (at least for somebody like me). I know how to make a custom NewForm for a list, but since the wiki is actually using the CreateWebPage.aspx page you're more or less stuck with the default layout. Sure, I could probably modify that page, but that would affect all wiki's in the collection - plus, the page would be coded for just one wiki.

It would be nice if I could just make a "NewForm" page (of sorts) for each wiki. Maybe in version 4.0. :-p

Thanks for the link, I'll be watching that one for sure!
