    - Developing custom Sharepoint site? Hi! Im new to this technology and our company is adopting sharepoint technology. I need some help and I got a few questions. one is is it possible to create a sharepoint site from scratch using the sharepoint designer then upload it to the sharepoint server then from that site I want to use the features of sharepoint like adding some webparts or creating list etc but I will use my own template site. I really dont have enough knowledge about this technology and I have a very tight deadline. any help and response will be very appreciated. thanks to everyone!     - MOSS 2007 Users unable to edit their profile information I have just recently interacted with this. Here goes: What I've been able to find out is that the User Profile information is IMPORTED through the SSP, correct Well, if you create additional properties in the User Profile, the user can interact with them in their My Site. However, the "People and Groups" list that you get in a MOSS site is just a snapshot copy of the User Profile information that's imported. If you added a property to the User Profile in the SSP, than that will be imported as well. However, in the People and Groups list item which displays when a user clicks "My Settings", they cannot edit any of the columns there. ALL IS NOT LOST. Let's say you just want to collect some additional information about a user or some profile information for a user just on that MOSS site You can always ADD COLUMNS to that list which will associate directly to that user. Then programmatically you could go back to that metadata about the user. I'm not sure why they didn't tie the custom user profile properties to the "My Settings" page, but since the "People and Groups" list is just a list, you can modify it. By the way, Joel, I had this same problem and I can see that the user has a profile (I am the user) in the User Profile store and I can see that things are resolving correctly - I just can't edit existing or custom properties at all in the "My Settings" - only in the My Site profile settings.     - Issues with WebDAV I had the same problem. I found a bundle of updates for Office Live client on Vista: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx FamilyId=F8BC14E7-84CD-41B6-AA3A-5FE8985C78FB&displaylang=en I downloaded this package and unpacked it. There are three patches for Vista inside this bundle: KB945435, KB945145 and KB933860. I've installed these three updates (and didn't use the office patch). And this helped to get rid of the WebDAV error. So one of these three patches actually fixes the MOSS/Vista bug. I guess it is 933860, because it is this KB article where 'The format of the specified network name is invalid' error text mentioned.     - Error when trying to create a Site or Site Collection Hi, I'm getting a very generic with no detail error when trying to create a Site or a Site Collection in a fresh installed WSS 3.0. This is the message: Error Cannot complete this action Please try again I see no relevant entries in the Event Viewer. Neither was able to trap exception by debugging w3wp.exe. I tried uninstalling, fully cleaning WSS DB's, reinstalling, etc, no luck. Ideas appreciated.     - Relevant information with SharePoint portal Hi, I work in the Health Care field at a health clinic here in the midwest. The executives of my company want me to create a very relative information rich portal. I am looking for some tips, suggestions, and to be pointed in the right direction on this. Is there any books, websites, or other tutorials that cover this topic well They want it set up so lets say doctor logs in, the doctor sees only announcements, news, and information relevant to him/her. If a provider logs in he/she only sees information relative to him/her. If a member of the nursing staff, business office, etc logs in they only see information relative to them. We are a company with abuot 150 doctors and about 1,500 employees. We have about 8 locations in a metropolitan area. They want a doctor to be able to log in and look only at information that is relevant to them, and not waste time looking at anything else. This applies to other employees as well, but especially for doctors and providers. I have the security trimming working well. That was easy to figure out and implement. I have a sharepoint site set up, with the doctors/providers having a subsite in the collection. Everything is security trimmed for them, where things that are for "doctors only" show up only for doctors. I'm wondering about the option of a "Personalization Site". Is it best to include this as a link they can click on for further relevant info Or is it a good option to have them begin at the Personalization site They are not interested in the staff having "mysites", but I understand you can still have personalization sites without having mysites. They are also very interested in KPIs and dashboards. Again, I am looking for overall direction on this.     - How to programatically set parameters for collect feedback workflow? I am trying to create an instance of Collect FeedBack Workflow on a word document present in one of the document libraries in my MOSS 2007 Site. Though the workflow instance is getting created successfully, It shows me the "Error occurred in Collect FeedBack" message in description and "Error Occurred" in status of the instance.     - Onenote, unable to "sign me in automatically" I have installed Onenote, and am trying to host a shared notebook on the Office Live sharepoint server. Via IE7, I can get to the files on the site, open them, etc, etc with no problem. The problem comes when I try to have Onenote load up and automatically authenticate to the sharepoint server. At best, I have to click sync, then type in my windows ID username and password everytime. At worst, I have to close the notebook, and reopen it with https://xxx.yyy.zzz/notebook . Any suggestions on how to get this to log into the sharepoint site automatically EVerytime I reboot I have to do this- not bad for me, but not an option for users....     - Custom content type Title Problem I am currently building some apps using sharepoint and I am running into a problems. To explain it in short: 1) I have a website (web_A) which has a custom content type ��custom_A�� which inherits from ��Discussion�� of group folder. 2) This website has a list in it called ��webList_A��. 3) Situation 1: I create a new SPList item in weblist_A called item_A. Item_A is of type custom_A and I assign a title ��Title_A�� to it. 4) My view for list_A shows only the titles i.e. Title, LinkTitle and LinkTitleNoMenu 5) So far so good. 6) I now try to edit item_A and while doing that I change its title to ��Title_A_New��. 7) Now after I update I expect to see all 3 titles to change to new value 8) But instead I see only ��Title�� changes to new value and ��LinkTitle�� and ��LinkTitleNoMenu�� have the same old value. Is this a known issue I need to have a content type inherited from ��Discussion�� in my design. I tried experimenting with alternate content types inheriting from Item, Folder etc and none of them seem to have this title issue. Is there a workaround Thanks!     - Upgrade STS Hi Tarek, Does it differ if the old server was with SQL 2000 Ent. and the new Server is SQL 2005 SE This shouldn't make a difference. I've never used smigrate before, so if i have multiple sites, what is the steps/commands to backup all these sites, or do i have to back up each one by it self If you have more than one site collection then you will have to perform several backups based on the number of site collection. You will have to excute the following command per SITE COLLECTION: smigrate - w http://yourservername -f x:\backupfile once the backup has been completed and you have configured your new SPS 2003 enviroment you would need to create a new site collection on SPS 2003 with out applying a template. When you get to apply template portion just close the window. copy the STS backup file to your new SPS 2003 server i.e: backupfile is copied to c:\ from your SPS 2003 server execute the following command to restore: smigrate -r -w http://yourSPS2003servername -f c:\backupfile what is the command to restore these sites using smigrate, again can i restore all of them or do i have to restore one by one smigrate -r -w http://yourSPS2003servername -f c:\backupfile Let me know how it goes, it's been several years since I did this.     - New To Sharepoint & ASP.NET Here's my dilema. I am new to SPS and ASP.NET and I want to build a set of pages that display active content such as PowerPoint presentations, PDF files, Word Documents, and a couple of things like a NASDAQ Ticker and a local weather forecast. The page needs to be sectioned into basically 5 panels/frames (whatever you want to call them) and in each panel the active content needs to be displayed based on a user/group level access. Here's the concept: I have a company that has 4 major locations, with 3 major departments, and 8 subordinate departments. I want to set up a plasma screen attached to a workstation at each of the 4 major locations that displays some stuff about the company as a whole (Powerpoint, Word, etc...) in one area of my webpage (Panel 1) and based on what location the plasma is set up at I want to have some department content displayed (Panel 2). Along with the location (panel 2) I want to have some local information (Panel 3) displayed something like "The Week In Review" or something along those lines that is directly related to the subordinate departments. Each of the 3 panels on the page will display content based on whether or not it is "active" or not. The reasoning is there will be times at each level (except at company level) when there won't be anything to display and if nothing is active at that level I want to pull resources from the next higher level and display the content from that level. I can see that multiple pages are going to have to be created (one page for each location to sign in with) and some structured code may have to be implemented in order to handle the actions that should happen if active content is not available at the given location. With that in mind, I have researched all over the place and watched a few tutorials regarding some of the actions and I think that creating a page for each site is the direction I am going to attack this with so at this point I have created a basic "default.aspx" page from within SPS (like I said earlier, I'm not a developer so I'm trying to do most if not all of this from within SPS) and added a couple of webparts like the "RSS Feed", Web Page Viewer" and "Image". The problem I am running into is that these types of webparts do not allow you to select whether or not the content is "Active" or not so if I display the page and something changes (i.e. the filename or a filename extension) then the resulting page will not be displayed properly. The second piece to this is that if there isn't any content at all for the given level then nothing will be displayed because I don't see options available within the application to allow for content to be pulled into a webpart based on it's "Active" status. Server System Specs. OS: Windows 2003 Server SP2 configured as a Domain Controller with IIS 6.0 installed and configured for WSS Sharepoint: WSS 3.0 (Just the services, I don't have a portal server app installed) SQL: 2005 Office Products: FrontPage 2003 Visual Studio: .NET 2003 So that's the scenario in a nutshell.     - Problem with Sharepoint customization I have a problem with VSTF and Sharepoint. I have installed VSTF 2005 successfully on a server using Single Server deployment. Everything was installed and verified correctly. I created my first Pilot Project (MSF for Agile) to see how this would work before I would create a production Project. The Project Creation went fine. I got to the Sharepoint site and wanted to Add a document under the Documents link on the left hand side (the quick Launch bar pane). Here are my steps: 1. Click on Documents link on the left hand side of the site. 2. Click on Create Document Library icon above the heading ��Document Libraries��. 3. Click on Document icon under the heading ��Document Libraries��. 4. Enter the pertinent information on the page and click on the ��Create�� button. Here under the Navigation section, I selected Yes for the option 'Display this document library on the Quick Launch bar ' 5. Clicked the Create button. I go back to the main page for the site and noticed the Document that I created appears under the Documents heading in the Quick Launch bar (which is what I want). However, there are other documents under the Document heading in the Quick Launch Bar which I don't want. They are Development, Project Management, Requirements, Security. What I did was the following to get rid of them: 1. Click on Site Settings on the top bar. 2. Under the Customization section, click on Modify site content. 3. Click on the document library you want to remove. 4. Under the General Settings section, click on Delete this document library. 5. Repeated this for the above 4 documents (except for the Document which I created in the 1st part above). When I go back to the Quick Launch bar that has the Documents link, I don't see the Document in which I created in the first part. The other ones are gone (which is fine) but the one I created in the first part isn't there. I went to Site Settings-->Customization-->Modify site content, clicked on the Content I wanted to modify. I went to Change General Settings and made sure that the document library had Yes when asking 'Display this document library on the Quick Launch bar '. I save the changes but it still doesn't work. In fact, I created a new document to display under the Documents link and made sure Yes was selected for it to display and it still doesn't show. Has anyone else had this problem Sorry this is long but I wanted to be as descriptive as possible. TIA.     - Lookup function backwards It seems like the best you can do is create a lookup field in the second list to refer back to the first list. When you do this, you'll have an additional option with (Count Related) listed. This will show how many items in the first list refer to the item in the second list. In relational programming, you often don't want a table to " know its way back" because then you're creating a two way link that can lock you into some unexpected behavior. But again, this seems that it can be done programmatically, but it'd be a bit of a exercise. Instead, see if you can create a feature that will create an ECB option in the second list's items that will refer back to the first list.     - InfoPath 2003: Generate a unique name for a form I have a form which can be opened in a SharePoint web site (button click). On the same site, there is a column called ApplicationNumber. After this form is filled, user can submit the form to the site. The form name will be something like "Application_00#", where # is the value of max(@ApplicationNumber) + 1. The problem is that there may cases more than one people open a new form. This may cause the their sumitted form with the same name, or same number. I preper to use increamental integer number as part of the form name.     - Data view web part errors Hi Samson, Guess what, i also encountered the same problem again, even though i did select " Insert as Text " The funny thing is that it works some times, and sometimes even i follow the same procedure as i mentioned in my above thread it doesnt work. But this is what i have observed....The Update works successfully, if you do an "Insert as Text" as i have mentioned in my above thread, provided Primary Key field is not included / listed in the form (from which you are doing an Update/Edit) . If you include all other fields, except your PK, then Update shuld work. However, this wuz not the case when i first worked on it...i wuz able to update PK also....but now the moment i include PK in my form, it shows me " The update action failed" msg I am working on it..will post soon..if i figure out a standardized solution. As for checking outgoing emails, try isolating the problem--try sending an email to a hardcoded address (e.g., your email address) and see if that works. If it still doesn't work, then I'd investigate your email setup; if this is in production, you should have email admins who can tell you if they're throwing away or spam filtering your emails (both possible).     - Unable to deploy solution I've successfully deployed solutions before. Specifically, a handful of the "fantasitc 40" solutions. However, when I tried to deploy any additional solutions, I found an error in the log that the "solution deployment" job was locked. I had to remove it with: > stsadm -o removesolutiondeploymentlock ... That fixed that problem, but when I try to deploy a solution I find these errors in the log: Solution Deployment : Error occurred for solution projecttrackingworkspace.wsp - Error: The creation of this directory failed: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Template\Features\pws. Solution Deployment : Error Global Deployment failed for projecttrackingworkspace.wsp. Exception - Error: The creation of this directory failed: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Template\Features\pws. This operation uses the SharePoint Administration service (spadmin), which could not be contacted. If the service is stopped or disabled, start it and try the operation again. Solution Deployment : Error : DeploySolutionPackage for projecttrackingworkspace.wsp for Target global. Exception message - Error: The creation of this directory failed: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Template\Features\pws.     - Deleting a site from the database? OUCH... Now that that is settled. I would not delete the url from the database table. We have tried this before in a test environment and it crashed SharePoint. If you have not tried this already: I would go into Central Administration > Windows SharePoint Services > Configure virtual server settings > (select the site) > Manage content databases > and add a database. It will replace the database that was deleted when the first attempt to delete the site was made. Now that the site is whole again you should be able to delete it correctly. Hope this helps.
