    - Search Web Service : System.ArgumentNullException After working on the problem, I figured that the problem is related with the FQN (Fully Qualified Name). When I send the query to the query service using the server name <server.mydomain.com> i got the exception but when i send the query to the queryservice using only the server name <server> it works fine.     - Templates Missing from Publishing Site We ran into a similar situation when we created a Publishing Site instead of the Collaboration Site (we couldn't find the Search templates & the site just didnt look right). We finally figured it out by creating a collaboration site & then everything seemed to be there. You might want to create both types of sites to 'see' what I'm talking about.     - SharePoint Designer performance is poor at best I don't have an answer, but I can say that what you're seeing is not normal. I use SPD a bit now and then and never see anything like that. You might consider trying this out on a colleague's work station and see if you can isolate it that way.     - Office Designer and VS interoperability First of all thanks v.v.much for the replies, i was going wild to find answers, atlast there is some starting point. Yes i agree about the custom activity thing, as you have replied me on the other post related to custom activity too, thanks a bunch. My needs are something like we have a large service tracking system with custom workflows and custom documents, now there is a possibility that the content types/documents may or may not be present in sharepoint server. So i thought we'd make custom activities with custom business code to do stuff and also handle the files that are present on local drives , so then the customer can use those activities to make his custom workflows( our customer wants to design and make changes to workflow by himself and since these guys are not developers we need to do it somehow through designer and not VS). So after he is able to delploy his custom workflow on the server and run it, the challenge is : 1. Integrating our application with these custom workflows, ideally we would want him to interact with the workflow through our application UI (application is a web app based on c#.net ).I dont see how is it possible if we cannot recieve events of workflows in our code or app. If any soln is poss this would be great. 2. So the other option may be that customer would most probably be interacting with the workflow through sharepoint portal(webparts that we'll make) and our custom activities will keep the workflow status updated in our db so that our application can make itself aware of the workflow status.     - dispersed sites - crawl with WSS Instead of spending money on bandwidth, we had an idea to disperse our WSS servers. So, we would have a central site with regional sites. Assume in this example, site A, B, and the central site. The central site hosts the portal functionality and in WSS the crawling of regional sites only.     - Sharepoint Service V3 schedule backup Help Thanks...... I've setup an automated backup using stsadm.exe within an *.VDS Script. I scheduled a tasks to run the script daily. But as I have noticed that after running script it backup all my current sites. AS one large file name <Site_name>.bak. If I compare in to when I manually backup all my Database IE( Content, Search, Administration) using the Utility within SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration the Files are different. There are a lot more smaller size files! I'm confused if my server did crash today can I recover all my sites and and Sharepoint Service Server setting with the STSADM or the backup DATADASE approach.     - How can I estimate the time for a Sharepoint implementation It is easier to estimate an upgrade being about 3x (Backup/Restore process) minimum (better number would be 6x Restore time; since backups are quicker), longer if the prescan fails and custom templates were used in SPS 2003. A new installation can be quick given that SQL Server is online, Kerberos is working properly on the network, and the necessary Domain accounts can be created as required. This gives you only the SharePoint application shell, the next very time consuming tasks will be to add content and that could take years. Before doing anything with WSS/MOSS think about site structure (/w security groups) and content types required for your end-users, that is the best place to spend time and give you better insight on the content itself. I didn't get a chance to try your post, but you helped me isolate the problem to the page layout. I redeployed the feature with new guids and got a different error when trying to create a page. ("index out of range") I looked at the page layout settings and the content type property is "Value#". I assume that there is something wrong in my declaration of the page layout when provisioning the file as a module in the feature. I think I have the right combination of GUIDs and Content type ids, but I wouln't be suprised if I got it wrong based on the wackyness of how you define a page layout's CT in the module. For the life of me I can't deploy a page layout based on a custom content type via a feature! Does anyone have a good link/example Here's what I want to do install custom content type (i know how do do this) and a page layout based on that content type (dont know how do do this) via a Feature. My problem's not so much how to hide the sign in link, as why I'm getting the authentication prompt using my master page, but when I switch to BlueBand I don't (hence I know anonymous access is configured correctly).     - Port Forwarding Error 404 My company is running WSS 2k3 and we have configured access to sharepoint on port 8082. To access our sharepoint box from an external location you would go here: http://mycompanieswebsiteurl.com:8082 The problem we are encountering is when you open a document library then click on any folder in the document library you get the error "The resource cannot be found. HTTP 404". When you look in the URL the port has been removed so it looks like this: http://mycompanieswebsiteurl.com/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx RootFolder=%2fShared%20Documents%2f.... My question is why is the port number removed from the URL when you click on a document library folder, and how can I fix this For now I'm having our employees manually enter the port number when they get this error. When using the client application to open a file for approval a box fades in on opening the form which allows you to edit.     - logToHistoryListActivity not working Simon, Sorry, I wasn't too clear. I have three activities in order: CreateTask, CompleteTask, and LogToHistoryListActivity. When I modified the properties for the LogToHistoryListActivity activity, I set the "Path" for the HistoryDiscription and HistoryOutcome to fields of the same name. So in my CreateTask I have: privaite void createTask(object sender, EventArgs e) { try { code here } catch (Exception ex) { this.HistoryOutcome("My message here"); } } The problem is that it doesn't write my message to the Workflow Task History list when an exception is thrown. This same code works fine when I use a Code activity instead of a CreateTask activity. we had a sharepoint site running on a server using port 1024. Some days back we installed ms virtual server 2005 and it used our sharepoint site port 1024. Now we can no longer run the sharepoint site. Can anyone please help We need to get the sharepoint site up and running again as it should re-enter production in the shortest delay possible ...

Hi,

There is a STSadm command that I am pretty sure will help you in this situation. The operation is 'getadminport' and 'setadminport'. You should be able to change the port by using the later operation. If that does not help please post back here and I will do a bit more research for you.

The virtual server list in central administration is also empty. I cannot understand how the virtual server itself got deleted. Any idea
