Hi Mismym,

There is no standard estimate for a MOSS implementation but I can define some sort of guideline that may assist you in estimation. However, these are just a set of guidelines and may vary depending on circumstances and the level of implementation to be achieved

  • For a Proof of Concept implementation which involves all the basic level features available out of the box in MOSS, you can expect an estimate of 4-5 working days.
  • For a moderate level implementation with all out of the box features and a few customized requirements, this can range from 12-15 working days.
  • For a complete MOSS implementation with a lot of customized requirements, workflows, content management and collaboration scenarios, this can lie within a 1 - 3 month range.

Again this can vary based on the expertise of consultants and requirements. I hope this guideline may help you.

MULTISY

It is easier to estimate an upgrade being about 3x (Backup/Restore process) minimum (better number would be 6x Restore time; since backups are quicker), longer if the prescan fails and custom templates were used in SPS 2003.

A new installation can be quick given that SQL Server is online, Kerberos is working properly on the network, and the necessary Domain accounts can be created as required. This gives you only the SharePoint application shell, the next very time consuming tasks will be to add content and that could take years.

Before doing anything with WSS/MOSS think about site structure (/w security groups) and content types required for your end-users, that is the best place to spend time and give you better insight on the content itself.

Good luck

Thank you,

I am new in MOSS implementation.

What do you mean by collaboration scenarios Can you give me an example of customized requirements

In a moderate leve implementation, don't we have also a content management

What if I want to make my portal an extranet.

Thanks for the answer.

Hi,

By collaboration scenarios, I mean the implementation of the mostly used features like document management, team sites and personal sites, news and events etc.

Customized requirements refer to your organization's specific needs like customizing the master pages, site templates, creating new workflows or developing a completely new web part based on the solution requirements.

We can have content management in a moderate level implementation as well but that too should be considered out of the box with the time range we have set.

I think for exposing it to extranet, you don't have to keep any additional time buffer for MOSS implementation itself. However, time will be needed for infrastructure like ISA Server implementation or any other security measures.

Hope this one has cleared things out. But if you need any further help, feel free to contact

Re: SharePoint - General Question and Answers and Discussion How can I estimate the time for a Sharepoint implementation

Mismym

I think I understand.

I want to buid a portal for the company in which I work. the portal should be used as an extranet. I would like to know how to configure MOSS as an extranet.

I saw in MOSS many site templates, I would like to know, in termes of space used, the difference between the templates.

I also would like to know if I can download some moss themes, or master pages, and if there exist a document on how to modify MOSS style sheets.

Thank you again for answering
