The search fucntionality in MOSS 2007 does not seem to be working on some of the non - msoffice documents.

For example I did a search on an uploaded PDF which contained text documents.

However the search functionality ( including the advanced search) could not retrieve the PDF document.

Any suggestion/solution

To search the content of a PDF document, you need to install the PDF IFilter

For more information, you can use the following links:

Hello,
My query is related to Search functionality. I want to know whether there is any way to display whether the MOSS Search functionality is active/inactive in a SharePoint website How can i check and see if the service is up and running Does MOSS expose some flags for the services, that i may be able to use

I am just trying to get to know MOSS a little better, and thought it would be a good idea to display the status of all services on the main page of my website....

Thanks n Regards

Hi,

You can see the list of services running on a MOSS deployment using the Central Administration web site.

  • Go to SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration. This will open SharePoint central administration site in internet explorer.
  • Go to the Operations Menu
  • In operation page go to the Topology and Services section.
Click the Services on Server link, this will open Services on server page.

To configure search:

  • Click the Office SharePoint Server Search link

  • Select Use this server for indexing content.
  • Select Use this server for serving search queries.
  • Give the user name and password in the appropriate textboxes.
  • Select Reduced under Indexer Performance.
  • In Web Front End And Crawling select Use a dedicated web front end computer for crawling.
  • Click Start.

Now you can see that in the services listing, search has been indicated as active. Hope this helps

Thanks Naveedullah....

But my query is more focussed on the client (user) side of the website application, rather than the administrator side. Lets say I have a website which makes use of four MOSS services. I need the users to know which of those four services are up-and-active. For that purpose, i just need to showcase in my website all the relevant services, and their current status.

I understand that the services that MOSS provides are consumed by the websites, and not by the users DIRECTLY. But still, wouldn't it be a good idea to simply put up what is available to the end users, maybe on a template which is then displayed on each of my website application pages

Thanks again....

Hi Abhijeet,

OK So you are looking that way. I am afraid you will have to use the Administration Object Model for this.

The following MSDN link can be a reference for doing this.

Hope this helps Smile

Hi Adithya,

You need to work on the relevance and ranking for MOSS search. This might also involve working on the search object model. Please see the following link if it can be of help.
