Hello,

Are there any good sources of information for designing a geographically distributed deployment of Sharepoint (MOSS2007 or WSS3.0)

Thanks

Martin

Hi martin,

This is a very hot topic right now and I reckon that MS or someone will have a white paper about this. The link below gives you a Fabrikam scenario of a GEO distributed deployment which might help a bit. If you are looking for a way that you can replicate your content geographically then you are going to have to look at some of the 3rd party companies that fill in this gap. Such as Certeon, Syntergy, and IOra are the first ones that come to mind. Out of the box there is not a quick and easy way you can replicated content from one WFE to another WFE that is geographically dispersed.

Please let me know if I can provide any further help.

Cheers,

Hi Jason,

Thanks for that. Can't see the file right now, due to my version of Visio, but found http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/1cffb278-6497-46fc-abd0-3dd652064c891033.mspx mfr=true which I presume is similar.

I'll have a look at that.

Thanks

Martin

Can you not just replicate the SQL server back end geographically
These documents give 3 solutions (central, central with regional team sites, central portal and regional portal). However, the one missing, is central with replicated regional sites.

There is some configuration/deployment stuff outside of the database(s), eg features

Yes you are correct the central with replicated regional sites is the missing part. Currently MOSS 2007 does not natively support the replication of the SharePoint content databases from one deployment to another. The closest thing to what MOSS offers out of the box is the content deployment feature which is most definitely not ideal in most scenarios. So to answer your question no you can not OOTB replicate SharePoint SQL data from one deployment to another.

Thanks,

Hmm, I can't ever see why you would use a geographically distributed solution then. If everyone needs access to some centrally located files, then how would they get these from their web front end based in another country and it be writeable at both ends...

Just seems like central is the onyl useful solution if you are trying to increase collaboration through an entire company rather than allow separate regional collaboration.
