search results do not display file type icon

I have found that the search results do not display the file type item icon. This is not for any particular file type, but all of them. The majority of what I'm looking for is Word docs, but instead of showing that icon I get the red x item icon. I have already read another similar thread ( http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx PostID=1742126&SiteID=17 ) and have not found any answer. Does anyone know why this is, and how I can fix it (ideally for docs, xls, as well as pdf)

*Note: running WSS3 and results are same if logged in as typical user or admin.

Can you right click on that red x and click on properties. Copy the url post the url here. Do you have any alternate access mapping configured

on a typical Word doc result, the properties url for icon is this:

What do you mean by alternate access mapping do you mean the icon gif uploaded to the site yes I do have the Word and PDF icons uploaded to the site, but do not know how I can remap the search result icons to point to those.

Is anyone else having this problem

I thought the images were supposed to be in _layouts/images. How can I correct this The web.config appears to be fine also.

I created a fresh new site on the same server to see if that made any difference. It did not. the icon url is still <server>/_layouts but it only discplays red x.
