I have about 10,000 files and folders that I need to copy to the Documents library at http://mysite/subsite/Documents/ ... too many to create by hand one at a time.

I tried copying the files and folders through windows explorer, using the path \\mysite\subsite\documents ... and initially, it seemed to work, because the files and folders are visible in that folder now.

But when I go to http://mysite/subsite/Documents/ I can only see the files, not the folders. Does anyone know what could cause the folders not to show up in Sharepoint after being copied through Windows Explorer

Sharepoint seems to know that the folders are there, because if I try to add one manually with the same name, it adds an underscore to prevent the new folder from having the same name as an existing one. If I add a new folder with a brand new name, it doesn't add the underscore.

(And tf there's a better way to copy files and folders in bulk, let me know.)

Thanks in advance!

The \\mysite\subsite\documents way is not a good way to go, as this is not a natural SharePoint convention. Try purging the contents you already have and doing one of the following (with Office 2003 / 2007 installed):

  • Go to the document library in question and switch to "Explorer View". Drag and drop into that window.
  • Create a new Network place to http://mysite/subsite. Navigate to Documents and drag and drop into that window.

Hopefully this will solve your problem. Be sure to clear out both of your Recycle Bins when you get this up and running.

Michael Herman - Parallelspace

In any practicial sense, it is way beyond the SharePoint performance curve to drop 10,000 documents in a single folder.

You need to insure that the number of documents in a folder (or a document library view) is no more than the MS recommended 2000 documents per folder (or view).

Go to View (far right) and select to Modify View.

Scroll down

Near bottom is the word Folders. Click it

Select to "Show items inside folders"

We seem to have the same task in front of us, all our documents are on network shares and since we can not include them directly into any library, we'll have to copy...

Same goes for our work process, since it's easier to download a document and store it directly in the folder than saving it locally and uploading manually.

We tried to move our document structure into the explorer view, but all documents copied there are initially "checked out" by the user who copied them.

Is there any setting to prevent this, so that as soon as there's no open file handle it's checked in or, alternatively, to bulk-check in files

We were glad to find a way so that we don't have to move them file by file, now please don't tell me we'll have to check them in file by file Tongue Tied

Yours sincerely
