Hi,

We have a SharePoint server (MOSS) with Reporting Services 2005 integrated using the Reporting Services Add-In. The reports need to access SQL data on another server so we setup Kerberos and delegation. Everything works correctly when Integrated Authentication (Kerberos) is configured for the SharePoint web application.

Now, instead of Kerberos, we need to use Basic Authentication over SSL. I switched the web application to basic authentication. From that moment, when a user clicks a report he gets a 401 Unauthorized.

I tracked down the error to the request that is made to _vti_bin/ReportServer/<somename>.asmx. This appears to be a proxy web service in the SharePoint site that eventually communicates with the reporting services web service on the same or a different server. It seems that the request to this proxy web service is not supported using basic authentication.

When I switch /_vti_bin/ReportServer to Integrated Auth. (using IIS Manager) and leave the rest at basic, everything works (delegation to SQL included). The request is then something like:

user connects with basic auth ------> SharePoint site -------Int. Auth.---> proxy web service -----Int Auth ----> RS web service.

Although this seems like a fix, it only works when reports are deployed to the root of the web application. It only works then because the request to the proxy web service will be http://url/_vti_bin/reportserver/<somename>.asmx and I configured that virtual directory using IIS manager.

When I deploy a report to a subsite like http://url/sites/asite then the proxy web service request goes to http://url/sites/asite/_vti_bin/reportserver and I cannot configure that using IIS manager.

Does anyone have an idea if basic auth. is supported in this scenario. Personally, I think it is a bug that should be fixed asap. But maybe I overlooked something and there's a simple solution.

Thanks

What is the Authentication mode setting in the Report Services "Manage Integration Settings" page in Central Admin

Do you see the same behavior when the Authentication mode setting is "Trusted Account"

I switched it and does not seem to work.

But we cannot use Trusted Account because the datasources in the report need to use integrated auth. When we switch to trusted, we get errors for every report because of that.

We fixed a Basic Authentication issue when in SharePoint integration mode, in the fourth Cumulative Update for SQL Server @ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941450/en-us as SQL Bug #50001712.

Have you tried this fix
