Hello,

I'm testing SharePoing Service V3 and am a bit confused about the presence system. If I add the Site Users web part I get the presence pop-up with options to schedule a meeting and that works great. The presence status under the Modified By column for instance never shows any presence info. I'm curious where that info comes from

Thanks,

Justin

I believe that information is meant for users logged into Messenger if you have a Live Communications Server in house or if you are registered with a passport account it can also work.

I guess I'm confused why the Outlook info shows up on the site users web part but not in other places.

Let me see if I have this right

If I had LCS the presence stuff would show green for online when a user is logged into chat and I would be albe to view Outlook data on a user in any place that has user presence info displayed.

I don't have LCS so I can only see Outlook data for a user displayed on the "Site Users" web part and can't see any presence info at all.

Thanks,

Justin

I haven't tried on WSS, but maybe try to supply the SIP address of your users, using an MSN Live Account. On my MOSS, I'm using the "myuser@mail.com" format, but if it doesn't work try with "sip:myuser@mail.com".
Of course, make sure of course that you have installed and are logged on Windows Live Messenger on your test machine.

I doubt LCS is required for WSS to detect presence if it's not for Outlook 2007 or MOSS...

Good luck!

All my users have a sip address specified in the form user@ourdomain.edu. If I remove that info the Outlook presence info goes away in the Site Users web part.

I guess it is not a big deal overall it would just be nice if the user presence info was consistant accross the web app. Overall it is petty as I'm blown away by the app and the functionality built-in. It really is a killer app.

Thanks for all the help.

Justin

Ludovic may have done a better job than I explaining how this might work without LCS. When I said a "passport account" I meant any of the microsoft login account that can be used for IM, hotmail, MSN, Live, etc. For example in my case I have my email address registered as a live account and when I log into our SharePoint site while logged into live messenger my presence icon is green.

I¡¯ve tried what u say, but it did not work. To go a little further, i configured another test user and both users (me and the test user) got status "offline".

Anyway i guess this feature is useless... unless ur company does not use corporated email. So i wont set in the user property a live messenger email, cause anytime i want to mail a user, set an alert or whaterver (from sharepoint) the message will be sent to user@hotmail.com/live.com.

I will disable it in the Sharepoint Virtual Server Administration.

Thanks for the explanation anyway.

Actually SharePoint (EDIT: can) still sends emails to corporate email (myuser@corporate.com) ; and through SIP address, it (EDIT: can) uses users' personal myuser@mail.com for presence detection.
At least, that's how it works in MOSS (EDIT: email and SIP address can be different).

By the way, by "offline" do you really mean "offline" (red spot) or "unavailable" (grey spot)
Also have you tried adding each other in your Messenger contact list

You can sign up for a live messenger account using your corporate email account so you would log in to messenger with user@company.com instead of hotmail or live or whatever.

I get a gray dot, but only in the Site Users web part...not the most usefull place as that is not added automatically. No one here really uses Messenger so I don't see much use in going down that road. Everyone uses Office though and we are primarially a MS shop with AD and Exchange so I was hoping that it would do what I wanted without having to buy any more software. No biggie. It is obviously chat centric but I couldn't find that little gem of knowledge anywhere.

I did that, i signed up for live with my corporate account. Tried out with my two test account and did not work.

I don't understand why this service depends on msn messenger

Can somebody tell me if in MOSS 2007 this issue is not fixed

It's not working for me either. I'm logged into my Messenger account. I have the email address for that account in the SIP field in my user profile. All I get is a grey dot. Same for any other user I try here.

Great,

MS asks 4.000 green tickets and has this problem not solved yet Smile!

I guess it will only work when active directory can detect logged users. Funny is that the auditing of windows shows you who visits the site...
