If I try to modify (move up, down, or hide) items in the global navigation using /_layouts/AreaNavigationSettings.aspx, the changes are correctly reflected in the preview window but as soon as I click OK, it loses my changes and reverts back to the default. I looked in the logs and the only thing that looks relevant is:
Unable to retrieve TopNavigationBar SPNavigationNodeCollection from Web at: http://servername. The SPNavigation store is likely corrupt.

Right below that are several lines like the following which look like its trying to execute what I had asked.
Adding key-value pair <'__CurrentNavigationExcludes'...

Any ideas where to look to fix this The same behavior happens on both our test and production instances. Could it be caused by our content I'd really like to be able to hide and re-arrange the subsites on our global navigation bar if possible.

Have you done any customizations (via SharePoint Designer or a custom site definition) or is this a stock OOTB installation of MOSS

I haven't customized site definitions or any other customizations other than basic configuration options provided within the MOSS portal. The only thing I have used Sharepoint Designer for so far is to bulk upload files into my document libraries. I thought maybe I might have a permission problem but I am a farm admin, and site admin, with full control over the entire site collection.

Is this happening on all sites in the farm or just a specific site If you create a new web application with a blank content database, then create a new site collection, does the same error occur This wouldn't happen to be an upgraded site collection from 2003 would it

So far it seems like its on all sites. But I'll check again and I'll try with a new web application and site collection to see if I get the same result.
No its not an upgrade from 2003. It was a clean fresh MOSS 2007 install as of 4 weeks ago.

OK so on a new web application with new site collection this works properly. No error.
Any suggestions how to fix the existing site that is having problems Short of re-creating the entire site from scratch, of course.
Thanks.

I've never come across this particular issue before. Can you give me some idea of what steps you might have taken that led to the problem so I can try to reproduce it

I can't really describe all of the steps I've taken to get here. It's been a continual process of adding, deleting, modifying, moving content as we try to prototype our MOSS environment. I've also been figuring out our disaster recovery plan which includes removing and re-attaching content databases. If I think of other relevant details I will post here.

I've found a couple of other places where people have mentioned the same/similar problem. (Note that I am also not able to add headings/links to my global navigation so I consider this the same as my problem).
