I tried to edit the default.aspx page of a WSS 3.0 site using SharePoint
Designer and I get the following error:

"The server could not complete your request. Contact your Internet service
provider or Web server administrator to make sure that the server has the
FrontPage Server Extensions or SharePoint Service installed."

When I click on the 'Details' button I get:

"soapTongue TiederverServer was unable to process request. ---> A Web Part or Web
Form Control on this Web Part Page cannot be displayed or imported because
it is not registered as safe on this site. You may not be able to open this
page in an HTML editor that is compatible with Microsoft Windows SharePoint
Services, such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer. To fix this page,
contact the site administrator to have the Web Part or Web Form Control
configured as safe. "

I don't have any custom built Web Parts installed and I checked the
web.config file to make sure that other parts are marked as safe.

The weird thing is that I can successfully edit other default.aspx files on
sub-sites

Thanks for any help

Re: SharePoint - Design and Customization SharePoint Designer can't open defaul.aspx page

Hi,

I have the same error, after the upgrade to MOSS from SPS2003.

I cannot open the site but I'm sure it hasn't any custom web-part or add-on. It has only some lists (links and announcements), content editor wp and an image one.

That's very strange because when I import the site from the migration server to the new one I had 0 errors and 0 warnings.

I'm crawling around trying to understand the problem but until now ...

The only thing I found is under SP Designer http://root/catalogs/wp all the .dwp has an icon (blue dot with a white i inside) but MSContentEditor.dwp, MSImage.dwp, MSMembes.dwp, MSPageViewer.dwp, MSSimpleForm.dwp, MSUserDocs.dwp, MSUserTasks.dwp and MSXml.dwp

Could it be this the problem

TIA

Guido

I don't have the blue icon next to the web parts. I don't think that's the issue. Since it's happening after a restore, I assume it has to do with some kind of registration but that's why I'm asking for help

Hi,

I was the same problem after the upgrade to MOSS from SPS2003, and I do this:

  1. Open the site, for example http://mossportal/site/default.aspx
  2. add " contents=1" to the end of url, like this: http://mossportal/site/default.aspx contents=1
  3. You have a Web Part Page Maintenance and if you have some web part error delete it
  4. Open the page with SharePoint Designer and all work correctly

Bye,

Osv

I have the same problem with the same message given in the first post.
I opened the web maintenance page and disabled all the web parts but the page still wouldn't open.
I opened the page in notepad2, removed everything between the body tags and it still wouldn't open.

This is a site that was upgraded from SPS 2003 (in my absence).
I can't open it in either SharePoint Designer or FrontPage 2003.

Hello,

I followed the instructions below and I am able to work on the default.aspx page in Designer now.

  1. Open the site, for example http://mossportal/site/default.aspx
  2. Add " contents=1" to the end of url, like this: http://mossportal/site/default.aspx contents=1
  3. On the Web Part Maintenance page, delete all the error web parts
  4. Open the page with SharePoint Designer

Thanks but that information was given in the preceding post. As I mentioned, I disabled all web parts but still cannot open the page.

I get

"the server could not complete your request.

Contact your Internet service provider or Web server administrator to make sure that the server has the frontPage Server Extensions installed."

By clicking Details on the error window I get

"soapTongue TiederverServer was unable to process request. ---> A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Web Part Page cannot be displayed or imported because it is not registered as safe on this site. You may not be able to open this page in an HTML editor that is compatible with Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer. To fix this page, contact the site administrator to have the Web Part or Web Form Control configured as safe. You can also remove the Web Part or Web Form Control from the page by using the Web Parts Maintenance Page. If you have the necessary permissions, you can use this page to disable Web Parts temporarily or remove personal settings. For more information, contact your site administrator."

I disabled EVERY web part but still couldn't open the page.
