    - Can i work on SharePoint site using VS 2005 IDE? Visual Studio is not the "tool of choice" for editing SharePoint sites...(now I am going to get the wrath of the Visual Studio folks...) You can do this easily with SharePoint Designer (SPD) and no C# code. Open your site in SPD and insert a Data View. Configure the database connection and query and then style the grid with XSL.     - Laptop You probably won't find a laptop which is properly specced for SharePoint development! This is because you really need a full server environment with MOSS running ontop of 2003 Server - not to mention Visual Studio etc. Having said that, I'm still on my 1 years old HP Mobile Workstation (single core, 2 gigs) and I run my development environment fully within Virtual PC. Hardly surprisingly, it's not superfast (in fact, it's rather slow at times) but it works for me. Also, I like the added functionally of using virtual machines which makes it so easy to change development environments on the fly. I'm probably getting a new laptop soon-ish and then I'll be running 4 gigs which will make things faster.     - Single Sign On Using MOSS Sometimes the problem deals with an internet explorer setting. Is the MOSS 2007 portal listed in IE as a trusted site for all these users This is one problem that could be occurring. The other problem deals with the fact that Sharepoint is an extranet site. If your MOSS 2007 Site is an extranet, then you can not get past the logins without using some type of technology like vpn.     - SSAS filter syntax Hey, I am wondering if someone could help me with the syntax which the SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services Filter spits out For the moment i am trying to filter a pivot chart (whihc i have set up to a cube and exposed the filter field as a parameter when publishing). When i use the SSAS filter web part, connect it to the same ODC file as the xlsx is using and then point the values on to the EWA web part, i can select one or many vaules and my chart filters - lovely. So i am trying to replace this with my own filter, but for the moment i am just trying to figure out the syntax for how i need to passs the variable values. i can pass a single value like so: "[Defects].[ProjectID].&[33556866]", which works perfectly (btw, Defects is the dimension and ProjectID is the heirarchy in the cube), BUT i cannot see how to pass mutiple vaules. I thought it would ahve been something like "{[Defects].[ProjectID].&[33556866]; [Defects].[ProjectID].&[33556864]}", but everything i have tried, i just get the standard " An error occurred while attempting to set one or more of the parameters in this workbook " error.     - Migration of Document Repository from Documentum to MOSS2007 Answers which I know: 1. In sharepoint any kind of document storage is done using Document library. It's fairly robust document repository solution with the help of Information Rights Management and Records Management site template (let me know if you have any specific requirement regarding robustness) 2. hmm... normally, try to get the file using filename, so I am not sure about how i can access a file using unique id. 3. which activity 4. never did it.. I've did document repository migration from Livelink to SharePoint, so some general pointers are: 4.1 We are using SharePoint web services and Livelink API Calls to migrate document repositories. 4.2 while using web services for document migration, special character used in document names will pose problems. 4.3 uploading bigger files sometimes fails. 4.4. We've used the XML Export of livelink workspaces to get the document repository structure, permissions and custom metadata and recreated thier equivelant in sharepoint. 4.5 currently we are exploring one more approach which is creating the necessary structure in SharePoint first (ie. create workspaces/permissions/document libraries first). and download docs from Livelink to a network location using Livelink API calls and create a XML file with the corresponding sharepoint upload locations and develop a second application just to upload these documents in pre created structures. 5. yes, custom columns can be used for the same.     - How to add number field which automatically increments? I assume you want a number field in your document library for each document, so that the document gets a unique number. I have done this for numbering documents, and it was a hard and complex road. What you basically have to do is create a reference site and a list somewhere on the same portal. The list contains the number. Everytime an event fires, or a webpart button is being hit (depends on what you want) increment the number and give it back. I first tried it with an eventhandler, wich is the most logical solution, but then you'll run into problems that Sharepoint cannot update your number because it can be locked, or you get 'save conflicts'. Now I have it running on a webpart, with a menu item in the context menu. Every time a user clicks on the button and the document doesn have a number, the webpart goes to the reference site, updates the number and gives it back and stores it into the custom field of the document.     - People search on user profiles imported from AD Daniel, It is very common for no results to be shown when you do not have permissions to see the crawled content. Review the crawl logs to see that the content is being added to the index Login as a domain admin (or someone you know has access) and do the search. Look at the crawled properties (from SharedServices -> Search Settings -> Managed Properties, on left hand navigation) select a property that should be from the user crawl and see if it contains any related information.     - How do I programatically set the "Title" value of a webpart from inside an editor part. Dylan, I dont know if I am following the question, but I'll answer what I think you are asking. You want the Title of the webpart to be set/changed, based on something that occured while "in" the editor part. And, you want this change to happen AFTER you click OK or Cancel. One way to do this is to put a public property (doesnt need to be visibily exposed to the editor part) on the web part, and then programatically set it in the Accept/Cancel logic of the editor part as needed. Then, in the CreateChildControl of the webpart, use that property value to set the Title. You have 3 properties involved in the query: defaultproperties (either with freetext or contains), isdocument and filteextension. And you say you expect 4 results. Can you please table docs with the appropriate property values Also, restructure your queries with explicitely specified parenteses - especially in cases you use mixed AND and OR clauses. It will make the query more readable. Once you share intent and new results, we can look for farther adjustment.     - sending repeating group data to infopath form in case anyone was wondering, i found this: http://blogs.officezealot.com/jkremer/archive/2006/10/31/14298.aspx I'm going to try and implement it and see how it goes. ATM its a bit overkill for what I need but hopefully it works and i'll be able to send repeating data into the form. It seems pretty wierd that sharepoint workflows aren't able to do this sort of thing out of the box as I would've thought this sort of requirement was pretty standard.     - Custom master page showing access denied error to users I am not really sure what could cause this. I surely havn't experienced this problem after creating 5 custom master pages. But then again, I only edit the defaultcustom.master under the _catalogs of root. My only suggestion: As an administrator go to the default.aspx to load the page. Click Site Actions > Site Settings. Click Advanced permissions and verify the individual users or domain group is added--possibily, the permissiosn were detatched when editing the default.aspx.     - ItemUpdating or ItemUpdated ? I have not tried this, but I do need to do something similar. I was thinking that I could use some sort of cache or temp file in ItemUpdating to store the old values, then get those values in ItemUpdated. I suppose another method might be to enable versioning on the list. Then in ItemUpdated you can find out the current version and get the values from the previous verison of the list item.     - Troube Changing Page Layout Hmm, I haven't heard of this problem before. What page layouts are you switching between When I go to my publishing site and edit the page and then click Page / Page Settings and Schedule and then switch the page layout from "(Welcome Page) Welcome splash page" to "(Welcome Page) Blank Web Part Page" and click Ok... the page layout switches. If I go back to the Page Settings and Schedule page the dropdown has my new layout selected. I think you would have to Publish and Approve the changes before un-authenticated users will see the new layout.     - Custom Field Type Properties Hi, Aaron, I was investigating the same issue for some time, and found a workaround, using custom control, to render field properties. I��ll try to describe my solution step-by-step. 1. Create your field definition in FLDTYPES_xxx.XML file, and add FieldEditorUserControl property to your custom field definition. Define fields for all custom properties of your custom field definition in PropertySchema section. If you don��t define some property here, you are not able to set it��s value using field.SetCustomProperty(��fieldname��) later. Looks like WSS just ignores it. In addition, you should set Hidden attribute of all Field elements in PropertySchema section to True. Otherwise, fields will be rendered in user interface. It has 2 methods and 1 property: InitializeWithField �C is called, when control is initialized; OnSaveChanged �C called, when user clicks OK button in field properties window; DisplayAsNewSection �C true if control should be displayed as new section in field properties form. In CreateChildControls we just populate our drop-down list with some values. The crucial point here is, not to try setting values directly to custom properties in OnSaveChange (like, myField.SetCustomProperty(��MyCustomProperty��, value) ). Even if you call myField.Update() afterwards, the value won��t be saved! More precisely, it will be saved, but then it will be overwritten by current custom property value. Looks like SharePoint calls OnSaveChange in our control, then continues to update values of custom properties from other sources (and our Hidden field in PropertySchema section is one of them), and finally calls field��s Update method. That��s why we need to override Update method in our custom field class and set custom property values there �C at that point SharePoint has done his job, and won��t change any property values. What does it render when you try to access the site by URL Not in database Does it render the site actually If it does, check your navigation structure - it might have been customized to hide something. On the other hand, you might have already looked in parent/_layouts/mngsubwebs.aspx, so the previous may be irrelevant.     - Unable to connect ... hey, if you set the authentication mode to PassThrough, it will try to retrieve the data from SQL Server as the user who is viewing the page in MOSS.     - Problem while accessing document from SharePoint server located on port other than 80 I cannot explain why you would get different behaviors based on a port number. However, I do know that your best bet in creating desktop client applications that open and save sharepoint documents is to use the Remote Procedure Call protocol. You can create c# code that uses a webrequest object that makes calls such as "get document" and "put document". You can use the dialog box for users to choose the document url and then use the url to make the rpc call. Microsoft Word is also using RPC. RPC will handle any type of document and does not rely on the temporary internet folder. When i try to create new pages to add to a site, they are stripped of the quick launch nav and that is bonkers to me-I can see no way to add the quick launch back in....     - Unwanted Authentication Prompts If these pages are at a different URL, guessing by the fact that you've had to add an alternative access mapping, then I think that th problem may go away if you have the users add the new URL to the Intranet Zone in their Internet Explorer security set-up. We are making decision to develop or not to develop system using WSS 3.0 and SP 2007. Now we have many questions and can't find answers Can You help us

1. If we installed our system (customized using .NET) with .NET assemblies tot he customer's site, how could we do automatic updates Using Web Content Management System But does it allow to initiate updating from the customer's side and to download updates from our server It seems that only we could put updates to customer's site. May be there is another way

2. Is it possible to organizae protection on fields level
