Hi

I've created a custom list with 5 columns. I want to make the first three columns appear for people who are contributers, and the whole list (5 columns) appears to adminsitrators (full control right)

e.g.

the list should look like this for contributerse.

Computer type:

Problem category:

Room No:

the list should look like this for admins

Problem category:

Room No.

You can use content query webpart to achieve this. Define the audience and apply the filtering rule based on the audience & user . Pls let me know whehter this works

In addition to Sundar's comment, you could use views if it's not a security issue.

Create two different views called "Contributor" and "Administrator" (or whatever name is appropriate).

You could provide a better UI to user by creating links directly to the views.

Thanks Sundar

is this will work when adding a new item

for example: contributers when adding new item to the list should see the three fields: laptop, problem, and room

where as administrators who will edit the the items (entered by the contributers) should see 5 fields. laptop, problem, room, assigned to, and comments

if it is not possible can i lock the two fields for contributers so they will not be able to enter any values

To my knowledge, both the approaches should work perfectly when you add a new item.

Check out the code plex project led by Ishai Sagi:

This will allow you to mark certain fields as hidden on the Create page, but be available on the Edit page.

Note that you are just manipulating the user interface, not applying strong security. However, it might well be strong enough for your scenario.

Your other option is to develop custom web parts to replace the out-of-the-box functionality.
