Hi,

I'm newbie and therefore the question may seem weird

I am working on one website that already exists. The problem is i want to change it, but can't. I'm currently looking at_catalogs/masterpage with no sucess.

What are the procedures to do it. Should i do it on a master or custom layout
Hope someone can help

Thanks
Drivingsouth

The Masterpage is really just a framework for the actual pages. So if you wanna edit the current lay-out I would suggest to make a curstom masterpage and use that as the framework. Use the default.master to see how everything works.

The question is: what do you want to change. If its just the style you can just edit the core.css.

Good luck and let me know if you need more help.

I do want to change colors, layout, pictures and other details.

How do i create a custom masterpage in Sharepoint Designer 2007 After created, can i apply the new created custom page to each site

Please details as possible, since i am not being able to generate it from the _catalogs/masterpage/C.master (the currently existing master page)

Thanks and sorry for being such an newbie, but this process doesn't seem to be very clear to do.

Hi,

What i did is just made a copy of the default.master and named it notsodefault.master(i was just testing it). Then I edited the notsodefault.master to my needs and right clicked it in sharepoint designer and there you can set it as default masterpage.
Next thing i did is made a copy of the core.css and edited that one to my needs aswell. I changed to following line in my notsodefault.master:

<SharePoint:CssLink runat="server"/>

to my custom .css file that i uploaded to my sharepoint server.

That should do the trick.

Good luck,
Rick

Hi,

After turning the new notsodefault.master (which had only one small difference in one character for testing purposes) into "Set as default Master Page", i've made check in. The layout of the pages in the website remained the same.

Going to "Site master pages settings", i tried to choose the Site Master Page defined as the notsodefault.master. Here i get the following error in red:

Warning: The selected master page has no approved version. This site may appear to be broken to users without the view versions right in the Master Page Gallery.

What did i've made wrong

Thanks for the help rick

one more thing.

First i didn't edit the CSS, then i've changed the code line you mention to

<SharePoint:CssLink DefaultUrl="css.css"/>

The behavious is the same, as i was expecting (but not sure of)

It seems like your master page gallery needs approval. Did you make some kind of workflow or something

Go to: http://<server>:<port>/<site>_catalogs/masterpage/Forms/AllItems.aspx and see if the new version is approved.

See if that helps, if not let me know.

Looked like it, but i could only approve after uploading one trough the web-based layout, not designer.

Now i can see it to change a master page in Site Settings -> Look & feel -> Master page, but when i do it an error occours after checking the changed site

An error occurred during the processing of /_catalogs/masterpage/cplus_white.master. Code blocks are not allowed in this file.

I can't see in the available help nothing on this.

Thanks again for your time.

why is that when i reverve some layout to it definition, designer 2007 will create a copy which i cant delete since he says there are pages with their layout attached to it

Not sure I understood you last problem, but it sounds like you are trying to delete a master page or page layout you have created, but it is saying it is still in use even if it isn't If so, using SharePoint Designer, create a sub-folder and move the files in there, then delete the sub-folder. Should work.

Your masterpage error says you have some code blocks in the master page which is not allowed in SharePoint. This might be <% ... %> or a script runat="server" block. If you need code, one method is to create a user control and put it in there, or alternatively you can extend the Page Layout class (search Google for that) and use that on your page layouts.

Hi,
Yes, that was the case. Copying them to the folder and deleting him after worked fine

About the second i dont need to code, i just need to change some look&feel from the existing site. This error occoured since i copyed the existing layout to start changing. Any idea on how to do that, since i am not being able to do it

Thanks in advance

There's some good blogs out there that show how you can customise at different levels, but someone posted a link to this one the other day which I'd not seen before and seems quite good.
