Hi, I am setting up a Sharepoint portal. On the home page, there is an announcements section (Latest News), and also, an alerts section. Both types of messages correspond to the web part type 'Announcements'. When I add two instances of this web part, I find that the announcements I create for one populate the other, and vice versa. How can I have two separate instances of a web part per site

Yes, I saw that thread. I thought that the Announcements web part manages its own content. I am not pointing to a simple list.

Announcements web part is displaying the announcement list.

Most web parts in sharepoint do not store the data in them. exceptions to that rule are the "summary links" web part and the "content editor web part"

Ok, then dumb question. Can one edit the content of Announcements web part, without going through its manager. Can I have access to the list directly

yes, just click the title of the web part, where it says 'announcements' and it will take you to the list.

Alternatively, click on the "lists" link on the quick launch bar. Also, you can open the "site actions" menu, and choose "view all site content"and there you will see the announcements list.

Finally, if you really cant find it, just click an announcement, and from within it you will see on the page the title "Announcements" which is a link to the list.

There are many such shortcuts you can use to get to the same place.
