I have been doing some SPS 3.0 work for a friend and decided that I wanted to get a copy of what I have been doing on their 3.0 server and put it on mine so that I could have a backup and work locally. I have tried a few things and have yet to get it working on my site.

1) Created a template of the site with content

--> When compiling the template I was given the error that the site was too big

2) Create a template of the site without content

--> Template created. I imported it onto my SPS 3.0 system and created a new site with that template. I receive a 404 error whenever I try to do this.

3) Run stsadm -o backup ... and -o restore.... -overwrite

--> When I run the restore I receive the error

"Your backup is from a different version of Windows SharePoint Services and cannot be restored to a server running the current version. The backup file should be restored to a server with version '' or later."

The server version that I am coping from is 12.0.4518.1016 and the server version I am coping to is the same.

Three different tries, three misses. Any ideas on how to get this copied over to my site in a usable format

Even though the backup/restore sequenc did not work, I would personally try for an export/restore sequence. Maybe the "export" (vs backup) would work in this case.

Just to be clear, you write "SPS 3.0" but do you really mean MOSS or WSS And, is it the same thing in both environments (MOSS -> MOSS or WSS -> WSS)
