After a new install, not an upgrade, I successfully created the WSS 3.0 Central Administration site. However, when I create a new site collection or extend a site the operation appears successful until I try to open the link to the newly created site and then it fails to open. I receive the vague IE message, "cannot display the webpage." I am very disappointed because after successfully testing WSS 2.0, I completely rebuilt my server to move to a fresh WSS 3.0 install. Suggestions

Are you having dns issues Can you ping whatever it is that you are entering in the URL This is a common mistake people make, they specify a host header and then do not have a DNS entry to resolve to.

No, the ping fails. Yes, I did create a host header. HOW do I resolve the page to DNS Does the Central Administration not require the same, as it works just fine PLEASE post back with how to fix this. Thanks.

Jim,

Can you check to make sure you have an entry in your DNS server for the site DNS is not part of SharePoint, it is a seperate function,if you have a network administrator they may be able to assist you with DNS problems, if not you need to find out where your DNS server is and put an entry in for your sharepoint site.

I built the domain so I know where my DNS server is. You suggest 'put an entry in for your sharepoint site'. How Where What interface are you referencing; IIS , the Domain Server Central Administration

The question is do you have an alias for this SharePoint site in your DNS. For example if the server name is X and you ping X on the network the DNS server should have an entry that tells the machine that is pinging that X is at 192.168.236.10 (just an example of course). If you what people to put the site name in their browser for your SharePoint site for example "sharepoint" then you need an alias entry in your DNS that tells the network that "sharepoint" can also be found at 192.168.236.10. The header entry is just on the SharePoint server so that when it gets asked for "sharepoint" it know which site to use. Does that help

Yes I have an 'alias' for my webserver in DNS. Yes I can ping that address. I have had a website on this IIS server for more than a year without any problems. Only recently did I install WSS 3.0.

But no, I still cannot open the site collections I created. I even successfully created a new top level site but when I click on the link to the sight the brower says, 'cannot open page'. Oddly enough, one of the sites is viewable and provides the team calendar which integrates beautifully with Outlook. Pieces are working fine, but why can't I open the other 'web applications' and 'site collections'
