invalid credentials on my own server

Sometimes, whether I log onto the Central Admin site, the SSP page, or a shared site I'm building for others, after 30 minutes (I think) I'm challenged to log in again. I get the message: "HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials."

I'm the admin on the server as well as the SharePoint admin... Sometimes I have to close all open browsers and then try again. Other times I've moved to a different computer to get back in.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction to:

1. Increase the sesssion time out (nothing's in production, so I'm not worried about performance. Yet...)
2. Understand why I'm getting this permissions issue

Thanks Mike! I knew I'd seen that switch for the "Web Page Security Validation" but couldn't recall where nor even what is was called.

As I continue to search for an answer to the other issue (unable to reauthenticate), I found a kb article describing a similar problem with the 2.0 Services. The article specifically states that "This problem does not occur in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0." The alert message in 2.0 was

The security validation for this page has timed out. Click Back in your Web browser, refresh the page, and try your operation again.

In my 3.0 version, I was getting the Windows login popup. But as I think about it, I wasn't actually timing out -- I was in the middle of active work. hmmmm....

I left security validation turned on, but set it to never expire. For anyone else with a similar issue, I'll let you know how that works out...

I recall finding a KB article on the MS site which described this exact problem and gave a work around. I have since rebuilt my Sharepoint server, and the problem seems to have cleared up in the process.
