    - Using the WSS List UI to display (filter, sort, group) non-typical data? Context I would like to use the SharePoint List UI/Web Part to display records from a non-typical data source. Grouped views are especially important and I'm trying to avoid writing a custom web part as we're done in the past (with mixed results). There are 2 subscenarios: a) aggregating all of the records for a content type across all of the lists and sites in a site collection and b) the data from a non-SharePoint datastore/data source. The Content Query web part only works with MOSS and is kludgy/impossible for non-technial people to use. The BDC web parts are an option (with a custom web service) but the BDC list web part doesn't have the same view capabilities as the SharePoint List web part. There is no requirement to create new records or update existing records. Questions 1. Are there any 3rd-party open source or commercial generic (datasource agnostic) ASP.NET controls or web parts that have equivalent functionality to the SharePoint List web part 2.     - Customise Search results I am running a contact list which holds about 800 records on sharepoint services 3.0. It runs really slow and have tried indexing columns and editing the view to show less data and none of these have worked as the list is still running really slow.     - Suddenly unable to create a new Top Level Site When you say the button grey's out immediately, do you mean the page starts off with a clickable OK button, but then as the page loads, the button grey's out In the meantime, here is the second part of the workaround (if you didn't already know this, at least). To list your site in the Sites directory, you should go to the Sites directory, and there is a list there. Add your site with the appropriate settings to that list, and it will appear as though you did it through the standard site creation process.     - SQL 2005 Database Mirroring in MOSS and WSS That's an interesting information since I've issued an official request to MS Germany regarding support for Sharepoint and SQL Server DB mirroring and received the answer that it is officially unsupported. Nevertheless, I find the limitations severe enough to discourage any companies except very small ones to use the DB mirroring. An out-of-the-box MOSS installation already requires more than 5 DBs so the limitation to mirror 10 DBs is hit very fast. We have about a dozend content databases and made good experiences with using a MS cluster (active - active in our case). The only disadvantage is that you need a shared disk space.     - New to sharepoint workflows, where to start? Here is my situation: I have been tasked with installing/configuring/testing Sharepoint 2007 (the easy part). I have also been tasked with 2 more items: 1. Create a document workflow for a word doc library where you have 3 approvers which must approve the documents, in order. Also, approver #3 could kick the document back to approver #1, etc. (From my reading, a state machine workflow would work here) 2. Create document libraries (on different sharepoint sites) that mirror one another. In other words, as soon as lib #1 has a document that changes (approved) it would mirror that change instantly in lib #2. My issue is that I have looked around the internet and attempted to write a basic workflow in VS2005, and cant get that working...my question is are there some resources for beginners in workflow The ones I have found seem hard to follow and gloss over much detail. Heck, I dont even know if I have the right software installed (for example in VS2005, I see windows workflow objects in the toolbox, where many exaples I see have Sharepint workflow objects...Are they different ) Thanks for any help you could provide.     - approval workflow I filed a bug with PSS that was confirmed similar to what you described. Basically, the short version is that when Approve rights are given to users via membership in an AD group the Approve/Reject buttons don't show. You can still manually approve the workflow task itself by going to the workflow task list. The problem does not happen when you explicitly list users in SharePoint Groups. I've confirmed this issue by adding the AD group as a user in SharePoint and also by adding the AD group to a SP Group. Both with the same results. Your page is unghosted and in 2003 there is no way out of the box to reset it. It will look through your sites and show you all of the unghosted paged - essentially all the pages you edited with FrontPage. What you can then do is pick a page and reset it to its ghosted stated - essentially make it like it was before you edited it. Fortuately the production servers work fine. However, the development and test servers do not - which makes it hard to develop and test. We have attempted to isolate the problem, but no joy. Here is a summary of what we tried: Our installation of SharePoint 2007 Enterprise Edition on goes through the following steps: 1) Install and follow DB Config Wizard 2) Used the Advance Settings (Select Complete installation ) 3) Create a new Farm 4) Specify Database Settings (seperate database server is being used) 5) Configure SharePoint Central Admin Web Application (Kerberos Authentication) Log into Central Admin and continue configuration as follows below. 6) From the operation menu, configure Services on Server 7) Configure the Search Services, Tick Query, Indexing boxes and provide email address, Farm Search Services Account, Search Databases etc.. 8) Create and configure Farms shared services from application management. 9) Create new SSP 10) Create a new web application for our shared services , using port 80, host header and again (Kerberos Security), tick IIS restart automatically 11) Create a new web application for our mysite services , using port 80, host header and again (Kerberos Security), tick IIS restart automatically 12) Success! KB#75806 looks like KnowledgeBase, so I wonder if you had installed the WSS 3.0 site and server admin templates in your original location.

The original location is a hosted SharePoint site. The any attempted restore of the backups from this site are failing because of this error message.

I understand, but the Server Admin Template for KnowledgeBase has not been installed properly if you are getting that error message, and was installed in the previous environment.

Got it. The KB WSS app template was installed at the original location but not on our local server. I can try that.
