I have a few scenarios that I feel are odd, but am wondering if it is just typical behavior of MOSS Search.

  • We have a scope set up for All Documents. That scope picks up everything on our portal site with isdocument:1. There are more items in that scope (~500,000) than there are total items in the Index (~450,000)
  • When I do searches, the number of results changes drastically as I page through the results. For example, I did a search this morning that said there were 8600 results. As I paged through them, the final number was 360. I did this search several times and the screwy results delivery was consistent.
  • An extremely large number of searches (more than just coincidence) return an initial result set number of 256. As I page through, it never ends up being that number, but several times per day, that is the number that is initially displayed.

If this is just typical Search behavior, please straighten me out, but the circumstances seem strange to me.

Thanks.

I am assuming you are using the advance search webpart in MOSS. There may be 8600 results but I do believe there is a rowlimit set for the results which might be what you are seeing. I am not sure but there may be a way to up the rowlimit. However, I am not sure you want to page through 8600 items. You may also be elminating duplicates. The results may show the number with duplicate results but the results return only unique records.

No, I'm just using the typical tabbed search interface and doing a managed property search by content type. The result set starts at 8600 but as I page through a few of the results pages, the number keeps changing and settles in at about 360 items. That is a huge difference and I'm just curious how the search thinks it has 8600 results when it actually has 360. The main thing I'm curious about is if this happens to other people also, or if I have major problems with Search.
