What does the WSS_Search_<Servername> database do what kind of data does it store

You don't say (and it would help more than a bit!) but I suppose you are running MOSS 2007.

If that's the case the WSS search database is -as far as I know - for the help files.

(In WSS 3.0 it's for the data stored in the WSS 3.0 system)

Hi, the search database is for WSS 3.0; I believe the search database for WSS 3.0 is also for the help files. I'm not too sure.

I just restored the search database (wss_search_abcd) using central administration and am having some problems reattaching it. I went to Operations\Services on Server\ and tried to start up the service. For the database name, I put in wss_search_abcd; however, when I pressed OK, it said the database was already exist I'm not sure what else I can use to reattach it.

Is it imperitive that you keep the existing index
I have tried to restore an existing index database in the past and got nowhere. We ended up creating a new index database and configured Central Admin to index every 5 mins to get the index built.

Is anyone able to restore the search database to a different server I'm having some troubles with it.
