I am not certain if this is the right forum for my question. If not could you point me in the right direction

I am trying to import documents into a document library on a sharepoint server 2003 site. I am dealing with a very large number of documents and some use certain characters in the file name (&, /, * etc.). Sharepoint refuses to import these files. Is there a way around this (The number is much to large to go back and change the file names.) Or am I simply not doing something right

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

teksurf

Re: SharePoint - Enterprise Content Management document importing/naming problem

Hi,

If as far as I know there is no way to go around it (even in MOSS), I think the reason is because the file is also a web page URL.

The best thing you can do is create an import program that will switch the names of the files as it uploads them (its a very simple program).
If you stored the old file names in another location you should run the translation logic on both sides.

Another alternative (although less attractive) is creating another column that will store the file name and a link to the file of this item (a hyperlink column in string format "httplink, name".

Hope that was helpfull.

Hi Hima,
We were importing files into document libraries by browsing to the shared drive in the explorer view of the document library. The problem we had importing them was caused by certain file names like "R&D". We ended up having to rename a large number of files changing all "&" to and. This was a real pain.
I am not sure if this information is of any help to you.
Good Luck.
