Hi,

I have built a Sharepoint site and I'm now ready to access the site via IIS through my firewall, but I'm not sure how to set-up the authentication.

I can get to the windows/IIS log-in prompt but can not authenticate passed it. I read somehwere that SPS needs to send auth via IIS in Basic text, which I tried (via SP central admin)...I've also tried setting the IIS website to clear text as well.

It's probably something very easy to set-up but I'm struggerling to find out how to configure this part of SP, can anyone help

Confused from London.

Hi,

I think In order to run a public facing password protected SPS site we need to install an SSL cert.....which we dont currently have :-/

Because SPS can only uses Basic Authentication via IIS it's mandatory that there is some form of encryption....via SSL.

I think this is right....can anyone confirm

Thanks

Slighty less confused from London.

Mark,
You shouldn't have to use SSL or Basic Auth. We have set up SharePoint with external authentication using NTLM numerous times without any problems. You can create the web application the same way you would create it for internal access. You just need to make sure that port 80 is allowed through your firewall as well as NTLM. SharePoint also needs to know the URL you are coming from. You either need to use the same URL internally and externally, or, you can extend your web app and use a different URL for the extended web app (i.e. http://intranet internally and http://intranet.domain.com externally, or whatever other URLs you might want to use).

If you do chose to do Basic, you should be able to do that as well instead of NTLM...however the disadvantage is that everything is then sent in clear text, so the recommended approach when doing basic is to use an SSL certificate, but it isn't required.

Hope that helps,
Ben

Ben,

Perfect....thanks very much for getting back to me so quick....I didn't want to use basic auth because of the security risk, so I'll extend the app and allow NTLM through the firewall.
Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a go tmrw am and post my results.

Thanks again,

Mark
