Hi,

I want to have different Site Collection for different departments, but I want to have them integrated into the main portal. Is there a way, that Site Collection can be treated like a normal Site in the main Site Collection, so that I have the navigation of all Site Collections at once

Example: The main portal should have the following structure:

Portal (Site Collection)

|---- Documents (Site)

| |---- Research Documents (Site)

|---- H&R (Site Collection)

| --- Employee Management (Site)

All should be displayed in the top navigation. Is this possible somehow

Thanks!

You can use the drop down menu for this so that you can make 2 levels like:

Home(Portal site)
Documents(site)
Research Documents (Site)
H&R(Site Collection)
Employee Management(site)

The navigation menu items can be mannually created at site configuration > navigation.
If you dont have the option for drop down menu active the publication sitepart at site configuration > siteparts(I think, i got the dutch version so im guessing here. its somewhere at the right bottom) > activate Office SharePoint Server-publication.

Good luck,
Rick

We ran into this same issue in an implementation we just released. You really have two options:

1) Manually update the navigation

2) Create something custom -- you can access other site collections from the DOM.

We decided to go the manual route. The amount of effort involved in creating the custom nav and creating a UI for it wasn't worth it. Then each department uses more of the automatically created nav.

Bummer ... an automatic function would be great. In my case, we have several TB of documents, which should be imported and managed in SharePoint. Pushing them into one database would not be the best solution Wink

So several Site Collections will be the only way to get all the stuff in there, but with these limitations in navigation ...

Poorvesh

I have 3 site collections in my environment

1) Corporate Home
2) HR
3) Sales

HR and Sales both should be in the global navigation of Corporate Sitecollection. Is there a way to do this through code instead of doing it manually.

I have tried to write a webpart where i can pass the site collection url and it will generate the menu based on the map of that site collection

Like
On Corp Site collection home page modify master page so that it will show me Corp | HR | Sales

Each will have flyover as below.

HR>
> Benefits
>401k
> Off Days
> Insurance
> Dental
> Medical
> Vision

We want to automate it.

You can get to other site collections through code. But anything you do would be custom. We decided to go the manual route due to the amount of effort required to not only write the custom nav control but writing a way to administer the navigation would also be difficult.
