Hi all,

I am running WSS 3.0 integrated with reporting services. When my site was originally created, the application pool was using Network Service. At that time I had installed one of the Fab 40 templates "Absence and Vacation Schedule". All worked will in the beginning. Since the integration we have had to change from NTLM security to Kerberos and have changed the app pool from Network Service to a domain user account. Since that time the workflows are failing with a "Failed to Start" message. I can't find any decent information in any of the logs. The IIS logs look like they may contain a 401 error, but I don't think it is related to the workflow. Does anyone have any idea how I can get the workflow operating again

Thanks,

Simone

I have a little more information. I went into Central Administration > Application Management > Policy for Web Application > Edit Users opening the account now assigned to the app pool. I checked off the "Account operates as system" under "Choose system settings". The workflows now complete successfully with the last updated by listed as "System Account" (I half expected this because prior to setting the checkbox it showed the app pool account). Shouldn't the currently logged in user be the account that fires off the workflow

hi simone,

instead of doing all these things just go to Logs folder in /web server extensions/12/logs. and see the error here.

if you find the error, again come back.

thanks

The logs in this location are empty. There are files, but there is no information in any of them.

Thanks,

Simone

No simone, there should be, open file with recent date time (format like systemname-date-time.log) and search for "Workflow Infrastructure". You are able to see something related to it.

try once again.

thanks

Re: SharePoint - Workflow ApproveReject workflow "Failed to Start"

It may be that during the previous 2 months I spent with MS working on issues related to integrating RS with Sharepoint that we changed how errors are being logged. I'm not sure. What I do know is that the file named ServerName-20070606-0903.log (the latest file date) and every file in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\LOGS" prefixed with ServerName is 0 Kb and empty. The last file that contains data in this folder is PSCDiagnosticsxxxxxxx.log and it is dated 5/24/07. Any other ideas

Thanks for you help,

Simone

Hi Simone,

once check this. Go to Central Administration --> Operations --> Diagnostics Loggind(Under Logging and Reporting). See the Trace Log Path is pointing to that 12/logs folder

thanks.

Re: SharePoint - Workflow ApproveReject workflow "Failed to Start"

Thanks again for helping me. I checked where the logs are going and they are going to the correct location. The files are being created, they are just all empty. I did notice in the same location there were no selected values under Event Throttling. Should I select Workflow Infrastructure

Re: SharePoint - Workflow ApproveReject workflow "Failed to Start"

Ok. I did make a change to the reporting, thanks for the info, here is the error I am getting (when I don't have the app pool checked off as being the system account):

System.ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected range. at Microsoft.SharePoint.Workflow.SPWorkflowActivationProperties..ctor(SPWorkflow workflow, Int32 runAsUserId, String associationData, String initiationData) at Microsoft.SharePoint.Workflow.SPWinOEWSSService.MakeActivation(SPWorkflow workflow, SPWorkflowEvent e) at Microsoft.SharePoint.Workflow.SPWinOeEngine.RunWorkflow(Guid trackingId, SPWorkflowHostService host, SPWorkflow workflow, Collection`1 events, TimeSpan timeOut) at Microsoft.SharePoint.Workflow.SPWorkflowManager.RunWorkflowElev(SPWorkflow originalWorkflow, SPWorkflow workflow, Collection`1 events, SPRunWorkflowOptions runOptions)

Hi Simone,
The meaning of that error is

The value is not present in the list or array, But you are trying to access it.

For example, in my array of strings i have four items, and now i am trying to access array["unknown element"], rise this error in share point

For more information, you deleted any share point default columns from the list

thanks.

Re: SharePoint - Workflow ApproveReject workflow "Failed to Start"

I haven't changed the lists in any way. The only thing I changed was the app pool user account. As I mentioned earlier, when I set the new account being used for the app pool as "System Account", the workflows succeed. Do you think it has something to do with when the original list was created It was created prior to the app pool changing.

Thanks again,

Simone

Just to be sure: Does the new account has permissions on the list right

Does your workflow works ok if you configure it with the Network Service once again

Does your workflow is reading/writing a file or files in the file system If so, does the new account has proper permissions on that folder

Re: SharePoint - Workflow ApproveReject workflow "Failed to Start"

The new account does have permission on the list. It is also the account that the app pool is running under. I have gone so far as to set the account as a farm administrator to see if this helped the problem, it didn't. Yes, if I put the app pool to Network Service it works as expected (not an option because I am running with report server integration). I don't believe the workflow writes to any files in the file system, it is an OOB approve/reject workflow. The account will work if I set it as being the System Account.

Thanks,

Simone

Once I had the same problem but it was resolved giving permissions to the Temporary ASP.NET Files folder located at the c:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework path to the new account.

If you take a look at the last error log and find the keyword "WF" or "WinWF"you should see what's causing the error.

Hope this helps you!
