Well, the title basically describes what is the problem...

I've uninstalled my directx sdk (october), rebooted to make sure things were clean.
Then I installed the last SDK (december) and my viewer (directx sdk's viewer for .x and .fx files) simply stopped to work.

Whenever I start it, it crashes with the 'send report' error. Any ideas what could've caused this "

Is "my viewer" one you wrote yourself If so, did you recompile it with the new SDK Have you run it in the debugger

Sorry, my question was indeed incomplete

By "my viewer" I meant the directx sdk viewer, the one used to view .X and .Fx files

Already tried re-downloading / re-installing (clean uninstalled before any new installation) the SDK...
Tried to re-install october SDK and its viewer works just fine.
The problem only occurs with the december Directx SDK

Other than that, as far as I noticed, everything works fine

Specs:
Pentium D 3.0 ghz
Geforce 7900 gtx
Windows XP (brazillian-portuguese) SP2
2 Gb ddr2
tons of free hard disk space in all drivers (all NTFS)

the error:
AppName: dxviewer.exe AppVer: 9.16.857.0 ModName: dxviewer.exe
ModVer: 9.16.857.0 Offset: 0009fd87


Tried to debug it... but I don't know how to do it properly, the debug only gives me tons of assembly code.

Is there something I can do to properly debug it myself or maybe some light on the possible cause...

Unless you are m3rcyful ag3nt on GameDev.net, you're not the only one having this issue. See here. Also, someone else on these forums is having the same issue here. It sounds like it may be time for you guys to file a bug report.

So, the problem seems to be that dll (d3d9x_32.dll) mentioned there then

Have you managed to fix it

Tried a search here, couldn't find it in my system either.

Made half a dozen of the 're-download / uninstall / re-install' process but still same problem...

Still nothing...

I've ran out of ideas of what to do to try to fix it... so, just submitted the error report.

Have made a simple project that just plots the mesh on the screen, it's not the most confortable way to work, but at least it helps to test my models until the proper viewer is usable again.
Since I'm doing nothing important there is no much drawback in working this way...
I hope any of you guys have better luck with it....

I also have this problem.

Dxviewer.exe does not even start, never mind load .X and .fx files.

I think that the dev guys might need to release a fix - all of my previous DX SDKs never had this problem with the viewer.

Tested it with the Dependency Walker

it accuses the lacking of this two dlls:
D3DX10.DLL
DWMAPI.DLL

might be a clue of what's the problem...

I just found the same problem.

With effect compiler issues too, this release of the SDK has been a bad one - at least for DX9 users (can't speak for DX10)...

I've uninstalled the DirectX SDK (December 2006) and reinstalled the October SDK.

The Dxviewer works as normal in this version and I'll just wait for a fix.

Same thing here, also the dxviewer project doesn't even compile under DX9/WinXP and i had that problem with the october sdk as well. Very annoying to have a great viewer that doesn't work now, and previously wouldn't compile.

Maybe we are all supposed to go upgrade to vista, but please don't force it on us right this second =(.

I have the same problem.

I'm running Windows XP SP2 (which is the latest OS that actually supports tools like XNA Game Studio or the XACT editor -- those are not yet supported on Vista!)

The DirectX Viewer application crashes on start-up with a deference of a NULL pointer that it gets back from some function call (according to the stack frame).

I'm also having this problem. I guess I'll uninstall it and reinstall the October 2006 SDK.
