Hey All,
I've just downloaded XNA 1.0 and tried to install when I found that it won't because I don't have Visual C# Express. I've been running Visual Studio 2005 Standard on my laptop since last February and I'm wondering if there's any way to make it work I think it's sort of silly install C# Exp when I've got Std so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Unfortunately, it doesn't currently work on VS2k5.

Though it may not look like it, there are significant differences between VS2k5 and the express editions behind the scenes. With only a certain amount of time given to them to develop this first version, they had to make a choice between which version to support in this first release, and they chose VC# Express in order to involve their target audience: academics and hobbyists.

As far as I know, which by no means should be considered official, they want to get it working on all VS versions. But, for now, it only works in official capacity on VC# Express.

That being said, you can use the assemblies in VS2k5 no problem! :) There are 2 core features that won't work unfortunately, as they are integrated into the dev environment: the Content Pipeline and XBox 360 deployment.

I hope that helps!

step 1. install vc# express.

step 2. install xna

step 3. load up visual studio 2005 (NOT vc# express)

step 4. load up a "Windows Application" in any language in VS2K5

step 5. go to "add a reference" and add the XNA ref's

step 6. enjoy

The XNA Game Studio Express system has been designed for the hobby developer, and so was Visual Studio Express. In the future there will be a version that will work with VS 2005 called Pro, designed for the next level of Game development Studio's....

Yes you can add the references to the application but you will not have the added bonuses that have been developed into the Express interface, this will also include the dialogs and systems to connect it to the Xbox System, and from memory this will also include the content pipline systems.

this is true, but you dont get the xbox tools for free anyway, you need to pay $100 per year to be able to use them, so, there is no real need for them to be there.
