- DXT compressed Textures Hi, in general it looks like there are the same DXT texture compression formats as for DX9. I assume those compression formats do not work with the new DXGI_FORMAT_R9G9B9E5_SHAREDEXP & DXGI_FORMAT_R11G11B10_FLOAT formats In real-life (TM) I always have to store texture data in DXT compressed formats ... if I want to opt for a better color quality in compressed formats, nothing seems to have changed between DX9 and DX10 ... is that correct Thanks in advance, - Wolf Tag: XNA Game Studio Express DreamBuildPlay is up!!! - ODD Bumpmap issue I have bought a book on shaders and have been going through the tutorials with some success. However I now have a rather odd issue with my bumpmap shaders... I have three shaders, a bumpmap shader, a parallax bumpmap shader and a self shadowing bumpmap shader. My issue is that when I run my engine with the bumpmap shaders I get a rather odd effect happening, but (after many days of trying to sort this out) I found that if I run FX Composer prior to running my engine, this oddity seems to go away. This leads me to think that FX Composer is setting some render states that I am not aware of and need to set for my bumpmap shaders. - DirectX - How to pick a point on 3D object Hello everybody, I'm working with DirectX to develop a simple 3D application in my VB.NET project. Actually, I'm able to rotate, move and zoom my 3D objet and now I would like to implement the possibility to pick a point on the 3D object with the mouse. In particular, the user must have the possibility to click everywhere on the object and put a "chek" on the selected point (mybe a circle or similar, I don't know at the moment). - Rendering hundreds of models How do games like Medieval: Total War 2 render hundreds of skinned models running different animations on the screen and still run at a good frame rate Is it possible that the models are not skinned I can't get more than 100 skinned models (matrix palette size = 50, verts = 5000) to run without getting a noticeable frame rate hit. This has to do with the fact that I am using shader instancing and doing 100 draw methods. I confirmed this by taking out all the animation and update code and only calling draw 100 times every frame. It's possible that my shader is inefficient (the DirectX examples split the shaders up based on influences per vertex), but I don't think it would be that huge of a difference. I don't even know if this would work (and I don't know how I would get it to work with dynamic keyframing), and somehow I doubt that this is how modern games solve this problem. - Question on deferred shading with normal mapping Hello, I am currently working on my deferred shading engine and have run into an interesting problem concerning the usage of normal maps. At the moment I am storing the normal for each pixel in world space during the geometry pass. All of my lighting calculations are also being done in world space. The problem I am having is it seems more people seem to do normal mapping in tangent space. In fact I've only ever read 1 article on doing it in anything other than tangent space. To address this problem I was thinking I'll just store all of my normals in tangent space instead of world space when I do the geometry pass. This seemed like an even better idea once I realized I would need the normals in tangent space for parallax occlusion mapping anyway. The problem is when I render my lights as a post process I have to convert them into tangent space as well. Since the tangent space matrix is per-vertex I saw no way of doing this without storing the binormal and tangent for each pixel as well (ack!). My second thought was to simply continue storing normals in world space by multiplying the normal map normals by the inverse of the tangent space matrix. Unfortunately this would be an extremely expensive operation as I would have to calculate the inverse in the pixel shader (unless I am missing something). I am wondering does anyone have any recommendations on this problem or should I start encouraging my art team to produce all of our normal maps in world space P.S. - Blending Multiple RenderTargets to the BackBuffer (Another RT) Ok. I am trying to write a SceneManager that contains a list of RenderGroup. Each RenderGroup is responsible for rendering a set of items (models, etc) to a RenderTarget and then rendering their RenderTarget to the BackBuffer (in this case a RenderTarget that SceneManager sets). The Problem: Blending between RenderTargets is not working. I have it working so when a RenderTarget is rendered multiple times with separate passes in the PixelShader it blends in Add mode. Between to RenderTargets, or RenderGroups in this case the blending fails. No matter what order I have the RenderGroups setup, it just won't blend correctly. - Rectangle collision detection help Hi, I'm learning how to use collision detection in sprites, and I've decided to use Rectangles. Basically, I program the game to make a rectangle around each of the 2 sprites and, when I move the sprites via keyboard input, it moves the box with them.( Now, I'm doing this to test collision detection. Heres the bit of code that doesn't work: if(Sprite1box.Right == Sprite2box.Left) { Sprite1pos.X += 5; Sprite1box.X += 5; } (Where Sprite1box = The rectangle aroudn the first sprite, Sprite2box = the rectangle around the 2nd sprite, and Sprite1pos is the vector of the 1st sprite) This doesn't work - the sprite just moves right through the second sprite. Now, I figured I must've done something wrong with the rectangles. But when I do: if (Sprite1box.Bottom == Sprite2box.Top) { Sprite1pos.Y += -5; Sprite1box.Y += -5; } It runs fine; the sprite doesn't go below the top of the Sprite2box. - Any suggestions for defining direction of partical effects on a 3D model? Hi all: I'm still playing around with XNA and figuring out what I can do with the current state of the technology. What I want to do is have a 3D model of a spaceship that has RCS thrusters and a main engine. The RCS thrusters and main engine will all have a particle stream to simulate rocket exhaust. Somehow, I need to define the size and type of rocket exhaust, and what direction it should take, and do so within the context of the XNA framework. I presume I'd need a custom processor for the model to identify where rocket exhaust nodes are (think named invisible cubes in the 3D model, like "MainEngine" and "YawRight"), but I'm stumped on how to define the direction of the particle stream in relation to the model itself. Perhaps something like "YawRightPort" means shoot the stream to the left, whereas "YawRightStarboard" means shoot the stream right. Any ideas Tag: XNA Game Studio Express DreamBuildPlay is up!!! - Compiling DX10 example with C99 compatible compiler (Pelles C) Hi, I am trying to compile a DX10 program with a LCC based C99 compatible compiler. It works fine with DirectX 9, but with DirectX 10 I get an error message in the dxgi.h header in line 287 that says: "Missing Parameter type '__RPC__deref_out'" This error repeats then a couple of times, because it is quite often in the file. In d3d10.h I get an error message in line 865 saying: Syntax error: found 'ID3D10Device' - expecting ')' and missing parameter type __in later in line 879 I get a "Duplicate field name 'guid' in [incomplete] struct ID3D10DeviceChildVtbl' ... and there are others as well. - Optimized graphics question: Which is better? I'm in the process of developing an XNA game and am currently documenting the artwork portion of the game. I am specifically interested in optimizing the art assets so the game performs as best as possible. The game I am working on will target 720p as its native resolution. Of course, in the interests of compatibility, I'd like the game to support lower resolutions as well. My question is (seemingly) simple. Should I have the artists create assets targeting native 720p resolutions and scale downward in code or vice versa In addition, if creating small graphical assets is the way to go, what recommendations do you have for creating assets that scale well enough to appear as HD content. Now, I'm assuming the latter is a loaded question and am happy to RTFM of any resources anyone suggests. - 3d collision detection are there any tutorials on how to do 3d collision detection. like between one model and another (and not with boxes... but complex collision detection) currently, i have a camera that walks around 1st person. - Trouble Installing Refresh I just downloaded 1.0 Refresh and attempted to install it, only for it to tell me that I need C# Express 2005 sp1. So I downloaded SP1, but when I try to apply that it gives me an error along the lines of having a bad version. I have version 8.0.5 of visual c# express 2005, running along-side visual studio 2005. Does anyone know of an official list of features and limitations for the different Vertex Shader and Pixel Shader versions (1.1, 2.0, 3.0, etc) I couldn't find anything on the Microsoft or nVidia web sites or on the web. - Problems with rendering... Hey, I'm pretty sure that these are both simple fixes.... But I've been having two problems with rendering things with direct x 9. I've worked around both of them for a while but I don't really like doing that, although I've been unable to come up with a reason/solution for either and my research on google and these forums hasn't yet provided a solution, so I figured I'd actually try asking for help... I'm writing a 2D/3D engine, and I've found that when I'm using 2D rendering, nothing shows up on screen until I render a font to the screen. I'm not doing anything excessive with my fonts - I'm just using the LPD3DXFONT class with the DrawTextA function to render my text. So as far as I know, that shouldn't be changing anything important. Regardless, until I've rendered a font to the screen, none of my 2D sprites will show up on screen. I'm using the following render states: m_pDevice->SetRenderState(D3DRS_LIGHTING, false); m_pDevice->SetRenderState(D3DRS_ALPHABLENDENABLE, true); m_pDevice->SetRenderState(D3DRS_SRCBLEND, D3DBLEND_SRCALPHA); m_pDevice->SetRenderState(D3DRS_DESTBLEND, D3DBLEND_INVSRCALPHA); m_pDevice->SetTextureStageState(0, D3DTSS_ALPHAOP, D3DTOP_MODULATE); EDIT: okay, apparently half of my message disappeared. So let's try this again... In case it's relevant, here's what I'm using to set my projection matrix: D3DXMatrixOrthoOffCenterLH (& m_mtxProjection , 0, 1, 1, 0, -100, 100); Other than that, there really isn't any difference between my meshes and my sprites (other than the fact that one's a textured quad and one's a full fledged mesh). The other problem I've been having is that in release mode, nothing shows up on screen even though everything works fine in debug mode. I'm not quite sure why this is happening. - Error in SpriteBatch.Draw() call with SpriteSortMode enum Hi all. I wrote a simple program using XNA to test the differences of SpriteSortMode.BackToFront and SpriteSortMode.FrontToBack options. I created two Texture2Ds and call SpriteBatch.Draw() method and feed it with SpriteSortMode.BackToFront, the program run well. But every time I call SpriteBatch.Draw() with SpriteSortMode.FrontToBack, the program threw an unhandled exception called NotSupportedException with the message "Specified method is not supported." - Cannot delegate to VertexBuffer.SetData<T> I wanted to write a method that basically delegates a call to VertexBuffer.SetData. - Game Components - help! Hello, I'm just starting out with XNA (and it's the first language I've tried that doesn't include the word basic...) but have found myself a bit stuck whilst trying to use GameComponents. I followed the rather excellent tutorial for creating a tile engine at XnaResources and now have a fully functioning game component that draws & controls my tile map to screen - my idea being to create a simple 2D RPG, but first I want to build a map creator/editor that uses the tile engine to display & scroll the map. So far so good - I've written a (very) basic interface that allows me to enter the name of the text file that stores the map data and then displays it on the screen. But where I've hit a wall is that anything I do in my main game is drawn over by the map being displayed by the tile engine... For example, I want to display text at the top of my screen showing the map name but it doesn't appear and I can only presume the Draw method of the component is called after the Draw method of my main game class therefore "overwriting" it So basically what I'm asking is how do I know what order the Draw methods get called Stepping through the code doesn't actually step into the Draw methods so I can't tell when each one is called. No doubt I'm missing something a bit obvious here but it's quite annoying as I'd really like to create multiple components to use and I don't want to have to keep amending the actual tile engine itself Could someone please try & explain how this works as I'm completely stuck at the moment...maybe there's an element of running before walking here but I'd really like to understand this as it seems rather fundamental to the whole thing... - Gamercards and player information To the MSFT dudes, Is there any news on whether or not gamecards will be readable in future versions I'm creating a multiplayer game (with both hotseat and concurrent play) and would like to be able to show gamer pictures and names and such (similar to how Uno does it). A simple GamerIdentity class and GetIdentity( PlayerIndex ) would be cool! - Unable to load p1_wedge following first Starter Kit tutorial Hello all, My first post. I've done a search for this problem online with no joy, so thought I'd post here in the thick of it. I have this exception when trying to build and run the tutorial: {"Error loading \"\\Content\\Models\\p1_wedge\". File not found."} With this as an Inner Exception: {"Could not find a part of the path 'D:\\Content\\Models\\p1_wedge.xnb'."} The p1_wedge.fbx is in the correct directory, and all my code is copied correctly from the tutorial. Can anyone tell me what's up - I had a problem with mscoree.dll a few days ago, and didn't really know what I was doing trying to recover it... Plese, Someone at Microsoft.... the drembuildplay site, even though the competition should be global, does not allow non-US people to register. I don't live in the U.S., so I can't choose any state, the zipcodes in my country are 6 digits long, and the telephone numbers are not in the US format.
Edit: didn't see errolian's post before i posted this.
P.S. did I mention I passed from neutral state, to exalted state and then down to low-morale state in about 2 minutes .... does this make me emotionally unstable

I'm not speaking for Microsoft, but if you want to enter you can always enter a US State and Zip code and phone number for now until they get that addressed. I'm assuming that you can edit your information later once that's been corrected.
Again, I don't speak for Microsoft on that, that's just what I would do in your shoes.

The site is live and yes we realize there are a few things that haven't quite propped properly. We've got people looking to get these fixed asap.
To be clear, yes you will be able to register outside the US as this is a global competition. And yes, the missing states will be re-annexed shortly.
