    - When is LoadGraphicsContent(true) called? Hi, I'm wondering if LoadGraphicsContent(true) is ever called by XNA (rather than client code) except for when the game is first started. The reason I care is that if I have to reload, for example, a Texture that a few different objects are still using, I have to make sure that they use the new Texture reference rather than their old one, which is now dead. Basically: am I guaranteed that LoadGraphicsContent(true) is never called except when the application first starts up and when I call it myself It appears that's how it's supposed to be, but from the documentation I'm not 100% sure.     - Shader states, etc? (HLSL effects not working right) I'd like to call upon all the shader gurus here for some help :) I've been experimenting with writing some of my own effects, meaning I'm a HLSL newbie, and have been using NVIDIA's FX Composer to do my work. After producing a cool (albeit simple) effect, I decided to try using it in my little model viewer. The problem is that the way it shows up through XNA is different than the way it shows up in FX Composer, and I can't figure out why. Looks like metal. And the problem, a screenshot of what it looks like through my viewer: http://www.hiranipra.com/data/help_attach/Xna1.jpg - note the sharp edges on the shine areas. So obviously I'm applying the effect right (as the model shows and such), and the textures are all there (when they aren't there is nothing displayed), but it's just not working. The shader takes in two parameters - the worldViewProj matrix and the viewInverse matrix. Both of these are set each frame in my code: effect.Parameters[ "worldViewProj" ].SetValue( _transformMatrix * transforms[ mesh.ParentBone.Index ] * _view * _projection ); effect.Parameters[ "viewInverse" ].SetValue( Matrix .Invert( _view ) ); This seems right, I think. In an attempt to get more debugging information, I set the pixel shader to return the color of the cubemap. This gave the predicted results in FX Composer: http://www.hiranipra.com/data/help_attach/FxComposer2.jpg - but look at what it did in XNA: http://www.hiranipra.com/data/help_attach/Xna2.jpg - completely wrong! Finally, I recorded a run of FX Composer with PIX and looked through the results - I don't see FX Composer doing anything different when it comes time to render my model (sets the texture states as I have them in the effect, and draws the vertices).     - Game Design Question: Multithreading My understanding of the game loop in XNA (excluding setup and teardown) is: 1. Update 2. Draw I know there are benefits to multithreading an application but am unsure how to apply that to game design. I'm stuck on the idea that you need to complete all your updates for game state, running scripts, and so on, before you move on to drawing. The only benefit to multithreading during the Update stage that I see would be to get update tasks done faster. But all the threads would have to finish up their work before moving on to drawing. Actually, that's what I do with my Earth Orbit demo: I have a thread that computes the day-night texture on the fly as Earth rotates during its day. This happens as a background task so that it is ready for the next draw. Perhaps someone more experienced can point me in the right direction for use of multithreading in games, specifically XNA It would be nice to make use of those quad core processors coming out... -Mike P.S. I figured out how to do simple animations by positioning and rotating sub-meshes on my model. It takes code to do it, but that's ok, I'm going to have a scripting system in my game.     - Forcing GraphicsDevice creation before Game.Run In order to incorporate Xna into an existing engine without a lot of ugly hacks, I need to force the GraphicsDevice to be initialised before the program loop starts (Game.Run). Can this be done Assuming this isn't possible (as seems likely), I'd need to ditch Game and handle device creation myself. This looks straight forward enough, except that it requires a handle to a window.     - using C++ libraries with C# and 360... Hey Guys, Up until now, all of my projects have been written in cpp. I had a pretty descent game engine written based upon Ogre3D and several other libraries but I kinda abandond the project when xna was released. Anyway though, Im currently still in the process of learning c# however, as soon as I have the language down pretty well, I want to go ahead and start recreating my game engine using xna instead. The only problem is, well, honestly, I'm just not good enough with my 3D maths and physics yet to create my own C# physics engine so I was hoping I could use the Novodex physics engine with C# although it's written in C++. Is this possible Can you #include the headers into your c# code Does the compiler still support c++ And last but not least, will the 360 even run unmanaged code I have aleady tried to do some homework on this, but I haven't found much on the subject.     - Rotate 2D Sprite problem Hi! I just started to learn the XNA..... I have a problem with the rotation of the sprite....     - Unified Input It's my biggest gripe about XNA and directx, there's no unified input... I don't have a 360 controller hooked to my pc, not even sure if that is possible... is it Anyhow, since i took the whole unified input idea from Lynn T Harrison's book, i'll share it here in hopes that people can email me suggestions and feedback. The enum translations aren't finished yet and the InputManager is a singleton (i'm on a singleton kick lately don't know why), and obviously the gamepad implementation isn't finished.     - FPU Error I am getting this error when I try to add the dude.fbx sample from XNA It works fine in the sample build, but on mine it does not.     - Very weird problem Hello, I'am having a problem using Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition with the XNA GSE. When I go to File -> Nuevo Proyecto (notice that, it's "File" in english and "Nuevo Proyecto" in spanish, I speak spanish) it shows this: I can't do any of the proyects I could do without the XNA (Console Applications, Windows applications, etc.). If I uninstall XNA GSE, those options appear, but reinstalling, they disappear again... And this type of things happen all around the program, for example If I go to the Solution Explorer, right-click in the project, Add - > Nuevo Elemento (mixing languages again) it shows this: I can't even create a class!!! And all the other things... these things happen, again, if I have the XNA GSE installed... but I WANT IT installed. Well, i want to solve all these things. Please help!!     - XACT Project Converter Howdy, After days of trying to track multiple wave banks, sound banks, and cue relationships I got rather pissed off. So I sat down and wrote up a Converter that converts the XACT project file into XML that I can query against to find all the information I need. I am using different versions of this to generate reports showing relationships and usages, track the files and folders involved the in project, and even serialize pieces into an XNA game to load sound and wave banks as well as cue names.     - Rants on XNA 1.0 This is my first reaction when I installed and tried the 1.0 of XNA. To summarize my feeling: it's still 95% for XBox and no nearer to replace the old MDX 1.0. So I decided not to migrate from MDX to XNA though I want to do that very much. I feel like MDX 2 more; amen to MDX 2. The hardest issue for me is the content pipeline, which is very necessary, but the workflow is fixed and it assumes the contents are only built before the program runs. The helper functions wrapping D3DX can only be used with types in the content pipeline. I have to utilize the full content pipeline just for generating something dynamically, of course with significant performance cost. Or I have to write those D3DX utilities my self. Currently I don't have a good idea on this. The other annoying thing is about type names. When using XNA with WinForms, the Point, Rectangle, Color, etc. are all need to be fully qualified in many source files. Those clones in XNA are in the same namespace with other XNA types. I don't want to import those types but I have no way to avoid them. Another is about types in Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Game.dll. They're mixed with basic types in the Microsoft.Xna.Framework namespace. So if only one source file used any of those game types, that assembly has to be referenced, thus those type names are occupied and I have to avoid those names. Why not let them in their own Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Game namespace Well, since it already released, it will mostly stay like this.     - XBox 360 hard drive question for MS staff - semi off topic With all the great new offerings out or coming soon for the 360: XBox Live Video Marketplace, XNA game creation, and the recently announced IPTV, the poor little 20GB hard drive's days look numbered.     - Cannot get a list of Lobby aware applications (C#) Good evening all, I just cannot seem to get a list of Lobby aware applications registered on my system. I know there are two games that are listed on dxdiag's Network tab, and shown as Lobbyable applications. But when I execute: Microsoft.DirectX.DirectPlay.Lobby.Client.GetLocalPrograms() and try to attach to a listbox, nothing happens. The array is empty. Any idea why I have DX9 installed.     - access violation when loading a sprite currently i'm creating a menu using sprites as the buttons, and i can happily load and run the program using two sprites, however, the second i try to add a third sprite, i get the following error: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000000. this is caused by the first line in this little block: g_pcursor->Begin( D3DXSPRITE_ALPHABLEND ); g_pcursor->Draw( g_pStartTexture, &cursorRect, &vCCenter, &vC_Position, D3DCOLOR_COLORVALUE(1.0f,1.0f,1.0f,1.0) ); g_pcursor->End(); it's worth noting that g_pcursor is declaired thus: LPD3DXSPRITE g_pcursor = NULL; which is identical to the two other sprites, and the data is all the same (cursorRect, for example is declaired in exactly the same way as the other rectangles for the other sprites) btw, this sprite is supposed to appear at the same point the cursor is - the idea being that the game will have it's own animated cursor rather than using the regular cursor. does anyone have any ideas why this error might be showing up and why only when i try to add a third sprite (since all the declarations are the same, just changed names on the variables) Tag: XNA Game Studio Express Creating a new XNA project Game Technologies: DirectX, XNA, XACT, etc.

    - Out of video memory when I have plenty (128Mb) I've had several computers fail to create the DirectX device in full screen mode because of an "out of video memory" error. In two cases, the cards have 128Mb, and I'm sure it's not using even close to that much video memory (front buffer + 2 back buffers = 3*1440*900*4 = 14.8Mb (not even close to 128Mb). On one computer, I was able to solve the problem by lowering the DirectX quality settings from the control panel. On the other computer, that didn't solve the problem. I'm sure my program isn't requesting high quality settings (MultiSample = none, MultiSampleQuality = 0).     - Post-Processing Woes I've started experimenting with full-screen post-processing after using a tutorial on Ramblings of A Hazy Mind (tutorial number 8 I believe), that lets you modify many things using pixel shaders, unfortunately I'm unable to find good examples of post-processing effects that will work with this implementation. I'm not really looking for a different way of doing this, rather I'd like to port an effect I've had trouble with into something that will work with Hazy Mind's system. The main one I've had a problem with is a Blur/Glow effect that I found on the XNA5D site, unfortunately it also implements a vertex shader which I have no knowledge of (I know very little about pixel shaders also) so I don't know how to get it to work without involving 3D models, here is the code (probably going to have some smiley faces or something). For those who don't know, Hazy Mind's post-processing system only uses pixel shaders (as far as I know). I am in Vidual C# express 2005

I go to new project and there isnt any XNA project types

I installed the express edition then sp2 then xna. Did I install the wrong link for the xna framework

Can anyone paste it so I can try that

Are you running Windows Vista If so you need to make sure you have all the patches at outlined on our team blog here: http://blogs.msdn.com/xna/archive/2006/12/20/visual-c-express-edition-sp1-released-and-windows-vista-update-in-beta.aspx And make sure that when you run the installer you right click the installer and select "Run As Administrator" those might help but please note that Windows Vista is not supported at this time so it may not work like you expect.

If you're running Windows XP SP2 you can get the downloads from here, http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx/xna/gse/ You'll want to make sure you click the Game Studio Express 1.0 Download Link the framework does not install all the tools to develop games with.
