- Calculating normals for large mesh with no vertex to triangle info I've used the same technique you're describing to calculate smooth normals for arbitrary meshes and it works fine : 1. Iterate through all faces 2. Compute face normal using a cross product 3. Sum that normal to the normal of each vertex of the face (initialy set to 0) 4. When iteration ends, normalize all normals. I'm was not using the triangle size weighting stuff, but it seems to be an interesting idea. Anyway, did you try to remove this coefficient to see if it looks better Also I've checked terrainNormals.JPG file using an image tool to see what the normals were looking like. I've noticed that there were nearly no red component where I think there should be. To me it means, if normals rendering shader's correct, that you're normal computation algorithm does not output one of the component. Even if the color output is a very usefull thing for per pixel debugging, another way to debug this is to draw normals at each points using small lines (it avoid shader/rendering mistakes). - Recommendations for terrainmesh collision and physics True, I figured that out using a few other tutorials that I found on these forums and ofcourse the trusty Google. But what I need help with is accessing the vertices or triangles so I can setup the BSP and use a ray-triangle intersect or as you said average y of the surrounding verts to see if a model is under or out of the bounds of the game level. I'm really not sure as to how to do that in XNA, it seemed pretty obvious in C++ with all the code samples lying around, but with the Content Pipeline in XNA I'm kind of lost... Thank you for pointing those things out too, you're really helping me to get over this :) All I want is a simple-as-possible (since collisions aren't simple) int GetHeight(int x, int z, Model levelMesh) which returns the height at the specified x and z coordinates so I can adjust my character's y-position, ignoring the verts that are far away so it saves processing time. - Blender Glenn, I have been trying to use Blender for my XNA project but I am having a few problems and was wondering (as you mentioned using it) if you may be able to tell me where I am going wrong. I build the project in Blender and it all looks as it should, I then export it to a .x file to be used by my XNA project but when I use the model in my project it all comes out a little odd. I get all the shapes I created in the Blender project but there positions and dimensions are not as I set them. - Humorous but somewhat serious question about XNA Where did you see this claim from MS As for performance have you seen the XNA Racer video That's using only one of the 360's processors (from what I understand). There's no question that the 360 can outperform the Wii. The Xbox can probably outperform it, although I don't have the specifics on the two sets of hardware. You're comparing apples to oranges with the Wii to XNA comparison. If you were to change XNA to 360, the comparison would be correct and there's no way the 360 is a kid's toy. - Pixel Shader 1.1 Hi, that's true only if you live in USA or in another developed country, in underdeveloped countries like Brazil or Colombia or really in any latinamerican country the most of the people don't have access to obtain a video card with this 'minimal requeriments' and if they can obtan it sure they don't have the money to pay it. I'm from Colombia, i'm lucky and i have the money and the access for this kind of technologies but the most of mi friends don't have it. I remembered my dissapointment wheh i did try to run one of my xna games in one of my friends pc's... I believe that a big point would be that in future XNA releases the runtime and frameworks include support to low levels video card or at least support to run using Reference Rasterizer in a low profile video card. - HOWTO: The fastest way to update shader parameters? The pipeline will stall a lot when you change effects, and stall a little bit when you change parameters. However, if you stall the pipeline to change one parameter, it is often almost free (or at least comparatively cheap) to also set another parameter. This is why it's good to improve batching. Whatever you can do to make sure you draw at least 2,000 triangles in each call to draw will help you in case you are vertex transform or batch limited. However, if you are fill limited, none of this will matter. - Post-Processing Woes Post processing as used here just means rendering something that results in a change to the whole screen. There is no difference between rendering a post process effect, rendering a 3D model or rendering some 2D sprites - they all go through the same graphics pipeline (which you can read about here ) with vertex processing, pixel processing, blending, fog, etc. The Hazy Mind tutorial doesn't use a vertex shader because it is using SpriteBatch and SpriteBatch uses it's own vertex shader, the tutorial just replaces the SpriteBatch pixel shader with whatever pixel shader is in the custom effect. There is no difference to rendering your own rectangle (2 triangles) on the screen and supplying your own vertex shader and pixel shader (this is what SpriteBatch is doing internally) but using a SpriteBatch saves writing the code for that. If you want to use the fx file you posted with the same setup as the Hazy Mind tutorial then you could start with removing the lines that set the VertexShader state in each pass so that you don't replace the SpriteBatch vertex shader. - PIX, DX10 and Render to Texture when i do a single frame capture, it only record up un till the first render to texture has been unbound. - Collision Detection With Bezier Curves I think this method might be too slow, and how would the MoveAway() method know which direction to move and how much One way could be to calculate a unit vector pointing away from the terrain and then work out how much the player would need to be moved along that vector to get out of the terrain. If you looped through adding or subtracting until it isn't colliding, that would leave how fast you would get the player out of the terrain up to chance. - Tiling textures I have a .x mesh exported from 3ds (3D studio max). In 3ds, the texture for my floor is tiled, and looks nice and detailed. However, when I load this mesh into my DirectX application, the texture is tiled, but is stretched to the size of the face... so now it looks like gravel instead of carpet! Can DirectX control how textures are tiled I cant seem to find anything. So far I have turned on Anisotropic texture filter which has made a slight improvement... but the tiles are still streched! If you're done already, you could just let your finished one sit there and start on another entry. You still have a week and you can submit more than one entry. Better chances to win, especially if you don't think there's much to add to your current one.
@Lima Beans - it's probably because nobody wants to give anyone else ideas. a couple of ideas here and there could make or break your game. Although I'm sure that afterwards, you'll probably be seeing a torrent of blogs/tutorials/walkthroughs in how people created their games.

Not everyone is being secretive with their entries :-D though I'll admit I'm not posting every single thought on the matter, I'm trying to share as much of the experience as I can without taking away time from the actual development.

the website doesnt seem to be working anyways, so cant submit early even if you tried =p
Get a login screen when I go to submit, but all the other links cause "technical difficulties" errors, so doesnt look like any way to create an account.
