    - question about positions It really wasn't necessary to post your entire code like that. To convert map coordinates to screen coordinates, simply multiply your map coordinates by the size of your tile. If your sprites (the tanks ) are rotating about their centers, then you will also need to half the size again of your tiles. If the size of your sprites are different than your tiles, then you'll need to adjust your final result by the difference. So, for example: Vector2 screenPosition; screenPosition.X = mapPosition.X * tileSize.Width + tileSize.Width / 2 + tileSize.Width - spriteSize.Width; screenPosition.Y = mapPosition.Y * tileSize.Height + tileSize.Height / 2 + tileSize.Height - spriteSize.Height; This example assumed that you are rotating the sprites around thier center. If you aren't, then the rotation will actually move your sprites into a different tile. I didn't read through your code, so you'll have to figure out how to apply these formulas to your application.     - Wireless Connection To 360 I could NOT connect via a wired connection to my router. I performed the following steps -verified my 360's IP -verified 360's subnet -ran XNA launcher -generated new key -entered key into XNA Studio -ran connect to pc -tried to ping 360 -ping failed. This was done on Windows Server 2003. I had the same problem on XP. I was able to stream video from WMP 11 on XP. I can not perform the same test because I am now running Server 2003 for which there is no WMP 11 nor Zune. Thanks for the link but that component is LGPL licenced and given the way the linking for C#/GSE works (at least when supporting the 360 where we can't deploy libraries as DLLs) the LGPL is pretty much the same as if it were GPL, practically speaking. I'll keep waiting for the MS sample and/or roll my own if I run out of things to work on before they release it. I really wish the MS/GSE team would reconsider their whole sample release policy. While I understand the red tape that can be involved when releasing things from a large organization like MS, with a brand new just-at-1.0 project like XNA/GSE, having so few samples to look at is pretty dreadful. You guys could probably save me 4 hours of slogging through the documentation by releasing a partial, non-fully-working couple of dozen line code sample that shows the gist. I'd much rather have something partial even if it is non-optimal or slightly buggy than nothing at all.     - Weird backface glitch I think that looks correct, unless I'm missing something. The DirectX Viewer comes with the DirectX SDK, and although the DirectX SDK isn't required to develop XNA applications, it has some useful tools and samples for the XNA developer. I think the d3dx9_31.dll was the "magic bullet" and it would appear to be native code i could put all the others bar it into a sub -folder and tell the runtime to search that folder with the config path. so it had to remain beside the exe or go into the system32 folder. as i said Im fairly sure id used the latest "at the time" releases of .net2, directx 9.oc, xna framework.     - Help Please, kinda alot of questions in here Im daily constantly reminded that nobody makes makes Quake III Arena on their first attempt. Not even John Carmack. Well maybe John C. but he'd be the only one that could :) Programming games is not easy and add to that 3D graphics which only makes it alot harder. Gamedev.net reminds me every so often to take it one step at a time. You gotta crowl before you can walk. Im affraid you are going to have to crowl through the mud and learn it the hard way before jumping the fence. Remember there are many experienceses that needs to be learned before you become one with the force... Actually just hours ago I saw the light. I implemented a GameState mechanisme with a stack and an IGameState interface that all the different ScreenState classes implements. And even refactored an abstract base class in there to hold all the basic information like a reference to the graphics device and the GameStateManager object. Need. It works. Cant wait to get this architecture wrapped around a game. So you see. You have got to go thru these stages to become a good game programmer. Start by doing some 2D first. Do a tetris clone. Then a Mario clone. The when you got the hang of it start looking into 3D. Might even upload my GameStatePrototype to some hosting site. I am actually a little proud of the outcome.     - Managed DirectX much slower than OpenGL The history of how to handle your render loop in Managed DirectX is a long and slippery slope - see http://www.thezbuffer.com/articles/185.aspx No matter what you think those numbers mean they only apply in a totally empty project. As soon as you do any work at all inside the render loop it will take several orders of magnitude longer than the slight increase you see from the improved versions. You will see less GC activity but it won't account for your discrepancy on frame rate. When i did the hexic demo for MS I switched in the Paint/Invalidate render loop instead of the interop based one - there was no measurable difference other than a few more GCs if you watched perfmon. I just don't see XNA's performance overtopping the Wii's graphics ability which is far below competative standards for today's games. Native DirectX has built Oblivion alone, which is more awe-inspiring. I still like XNA - it's a great tool for hobbyists, and they will probably never meet the day of XNA's limits so it's perfect for them, but it will still have to win me over for commercial development. And yes, far beyond XNA Racer. Good start though :) I'm willing to be swayed over to XNA though, but it may take a few more versions to get to that point. I think that the problem may be that you want to track the cumulative time elapsed, rather than the cumulative function of those tiny changes in time. Based on your description, it sounds like you're expecting each call to Update to make some noticable change. Sometimes the difference in time between frames may be too small to notice in your object's movement. Try something like this: private double m_totalElapsed = 0; public void Update( double elapsed){ m_totalElapsed += elapsed; myPosition.Y = Math.Sin( m_totalElapsed ) * 5; } Where Update() is a member of your game object and elapsed is the number of seconds that have elapsed since the last time Update() was called.That way your animation will be smooth over time.     - Character Jumping... Using physics principles. You need a Y location variable, a Y velocity, and a Y acceleration. Every frame/tick, your Y location is updated by adding the Y velocity, and your Y velocity is updated by adding the Y acceleration. float ypos,yvel, yacc; ypos = ypos + yvel ; yvel = yvel + yacc; then you set yacc to your gravitational constant (-9.8 ) and yvel to 0. When your user clicks the jump button, set yvel to some number (say 100) then on the next frame the character will move 100 units up, on the next it will move only 91.2 units up, and then so on until the variable reaches 0, at which point it goes into negative numbers and your character moves back down to the ground. You must set your yvel to 0 when ever there is ground under your character. Hope this helps.     - 360 Deployment Issues I hadn't tried that so gave it a go. No joy. Connection still just times out. Don't know what else to try. It's a Belkin router and the virtual server section only lets me add ports to 1 ip address. So say I add 1000 I can assign it to 192.168.2.8 (the xbox360) or 192.168.2.13 (my PC) but not both. I don't know if it's that or not but I'd have thought ping would work fine (and that still times out). Thanks!     - Q on Terrains For the terrain texturing (brick path, worn grass/dirt, rock, etc), typically you'll use texture splatting. For the detail geometry, you'll either use generated detail geometry (grass, etc), or artist-placed detail geometry.     - Optimizing Multi-Rendering of the Same Model Yah, you pretty much just want to reduce the number of Draw calls you make to the GPU. It can process a lot of Vertices/Fragments in parallel, but every time you have to switch data (like a texture) you have to stop the process and go back and forth between the GPU/CPU/memory before the GPU can start churning numbers again. So yah, your method of splitting up the draw calls so you're drawing parts grouped by texture would work great. I load a model from file into XNA and I want to store the data for modifying the vertex and adding some vertices and make some other transformations, like grouping all the small models in one single vertex buffer and index buffer and making a basic collision detector with walls. But when I try to get the data from the index buffer I get this error "You cannot call GetData on a resource that was created with ResourceUsage.WriteOnly." And the ResourceUsage property is readonly, (althought in the documentation says "gets or sets") and it seems that there is no way to change that. Once you figure out where it's deciding to exit, you should have a better idea of why. hello there,

I’ve created a 3d modell and now i wonder how to animate it...

I don’t want to rotatet or translate the whole model, I just want to create an animation by working with the bones...unfortunatly I did’nt find an example file where this is done.
also I wonder how a allready present animation( which is created in a 3d modelling programm ) can be started.

hmmm, which of the examples could be useful

My problem is that i am able to traverse over all bones(joints) from my modell...I can let give me there names etc...but what I really want to do is to change their direction...something like a rotation...but i think this kind of function does not exist
Something like a myModel.Bones[number].rotate(f,f,f);

So how can I get the rotation anyway or is this impossible

When I look at the Matrix Values for each bone, they are all NULL...
I know how to mathematicly perform a rotation to an object via Matrix Operations...but I don’t see how I cann do this on the modell....

If you take a look at the documentation that was installed with XNA Game Studio Express, there is an example of how to translate the matrix of the model.
