    - Problems to Create a Vertex Buffer... Anybody, HELP...? Hi, ... ... ... I'm trying to make a Vertex Buffer with a Direct3D Device and Pointer like the codes below...     - Managed DirectX reference for C# project If I install a project from "DirectX Sample Browser" the references for DirectX (december 2006) are like this: C:\WINDOWS\assembly\GAC\Microsoft.DirectX\1.0.2902.0__31bf3856ad364e35\Microsoft.DirectX.dll But this folder path don't exist, exist only until C:\WINDOWS\assembly where I found all library, DirectX too. If inside Visual Studio I click "Add Reference" I find only folder path like this C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\DirectX for Managed Code\1.0.2902.0\Microsoft.DirectX.dll and this folder path exist. Both version of dll work very well on my PC, but the second don't work if i try it on other computer. Don't work the exe and don't work if I open project too: wrong reference. SDK is installed also on second computer (always december 2006). Now the question. How can I add reference to right DLL (without using "DirectX Sample Browser" projects) that will work on any computer with right runtime installed From "Add Reference" I don't see the path C:\WINDOWS\assembly\GAC\... for dll.     - problem getting font to work with XNAExtras I'm not sure if this is the correct place for help with XNAExtras, but I couldn't find any other forum about it. Anyway, I downloaded the tool, included the correct classes and made a .xml file and an image for the font I want to use with the tool that comes with XNAExtras. I included XNAExtras with the project and have all the code from the example programs included, but when I run my program, it tells me that the font I'm trying to use when I create a new BitmapFont object can't be found. Copying the same two font files into the existing font example causes the same error. However, when I try to copy the font files that were initially in the example and work fine there back to my own project, I get the same error in my own project.     - XNA Video Demo for Sphere Hey Everyone, I have been working on my first game in XNA, and just posted a gameplay video of it up on YouTube. The game is called Sphere, and it is a simple 2D game where you play the white sphere, and the object is to avoid the other spheres as they chase you around the screen. As time goes by, the game gets faster. The player has the ability to activate "slow motion" which slows the game down to help get out of tight spots. Right now the slow motion is unlimited, as I am working out some type of dynamics to make it so the whole game isn't played in slow mo. But the slow mo is apparent when watching the video. The game is still in development, but I do plan on fully polishing and releasing it to the public. Check it out here . Any comments or suggestions are much appreciated. BTW, the music is not apart of the game, it was just some background music that was playing when I first started to make the video, and I thought it fit well so I kept it in.     - problem viewing .x file format done in Blender Im having a problem when executing the first tutorial of xna tutorial documents in the msdn express, the model works just fine when i use the tutorial example " p1_wedge.fbx " but when I use my model, a .x model I made in blender and used the directx .x exporter , the model appears with transparency and I can see the colors at the other side of the model, really strange, are there any ideas why this happen just for some explanation... the model is a human with some armature and armature animation, it is uv mapped, and in directx viewer it looks solid and the animation works good !     - HLSL design and compiler cleverness I have a good amount of shaders/fx files where all have several techniques for various shader level and detail implementations. In a worst case scenario this leads to a lot of similar code being represented in the various vertex and pixel shaders I use, which is really a maintenance hell if left like that. Change code in one place and 5+ other places need the same change. So this leads me to the following idea: Split the code into various functions and place them in suitable include files. Include the needed files for a given shader and call the functions. A few examples of such functions: translatePosition(), getSpecular(), getDiffuse(), getNormalMapSpecular() getShadowValue() and so on. Doing this would mean one task only exists in one file and only one function, which would make it very maintainable. However, as with normal code having excess amount of function calls leads to a certain amount of overhead.     - Using XNA On Windows Boot Of MacBook? This is an odd question. I'm more of a Mac person for my daily routine, but I love XNA and want to use it for my game programming. I currently have a PC tower which is my primary programming station, but I'm about to buy a new Mac laptop and wondered if anyone here has had any experience using XNA while booting Windows on a MacBook with BootCamp. My main concern is the graphics. It uses the Intel GMA 950 which (according to Intel's site) supports up to shader version 2.0 in hardware and 3.0 in software, but I'm wondering how accurate that is, i.e. is it a supported feature that will only run at 2fps Otherwise I might get the MacBook Pro and use that to boot Windows and use the X1600 :). Sorry if you don't want me mentioning the Apple computers, but for my daily routine, it's my main machine, but XNA is my programming environment so I just wanted to see if anyone here did this already.     - issue about DrawIndexedPrimitives hi. one of the DrawIndexedPrimitives method parameters is NumVertices that specify number of vertices during the call as all you know. but i faced a problem that this parameter reads vertices that are one after anothe in the vertexbuffer. let me explain my problem on a picture: for example i have such vb: 1 5 9 13 2 6 10 14 3 7 11 15 4 8 12 16 and i need to draw triangles that uses 1, 2, 5 and 6 vertices i.e. 4 vertcices at all. but as you may guess if i will pass 4 as numvertices function will only read 1, 2, 3, 4 verts. my question is: what is better 1. to pass whole (or for example bigger part of vb) to function 2. fill my vb in block-style, i.e.: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8... where 3 and 4 are equal to 5 and 6 accordingly and so on. p.s. it's interesing what stands behind DrawIndexedPrimitives (and any other draw call), how much vertices are really send to videocard etc..     - Material vs Shader Welcome to another one of my newb questions! Can somebody explain the difference between a material and a shader My own ideas would probably be: - A Material defines the texture and lighting properties of a surface, and maybe even the sound properties of a surface. Visual qualities of a material can be described with shader(s) !     - Custom Content Processor - Usage Hi, I am looking from some advice on writing a custom content processor for XNA. I have been working on a tile engine and have my Windows based tile map editor up and running. This editor produces an XML file holding all the tile set bitmaps, a list of all the levels in the map and a list of layers on each level. I am thinking of using a custom content processor to load this XML file, parse it and serialise it to the xnb file. I then plan to write a custom importer which will create a top level map object which will hold the tile sets as Texure2D objects and a dictionary of levels in the map.     - Custom soundtracks I've only had XNA Game Studio Express since yesterday, but I've been having a lot of fun with it. I've started working on a game which is coming along nicely, but one thing irks me - I can't figure out how to have music playing that stops when a user chooses a custom soundtrack instead. Basically I'm gonna have to port a graphics app engine from DX9 to DX10 and have to include DX10, at least some DX9 headers/libs, the seperate DirectShow files, and if I want rumble support for my Wireless XBox360 controller for Windows I need to include XInput because DirectInput doesnt have that support.     - ODD Bumpmap issue I have bought a book on shaders and have been going through the tutorials with some success. However I now have a rather odd issue with my bumpmap shaders... I have three shaders, a bumpmap shader, a parallax bumpmap shader and a self shadowing bumpmap shader. My issue is that when I run my engine with the bumpmap shaders I get a rather odd effect happening, but (after many days of trying to sort this out) I found that if I run FX Composer prior to running my engine, this oddity seems to go away. This leads me to think that FX Composer is setting some render states that I am not aware of and need to set for my bumpmap shaders.     - Rendering hundreds of models How do games like Medieval: Total War 2 render hundreds of skinned models running different animations on the screen and still run at a good frame rate Is it possible that the models are not skinned I can't get more than 100 skinned models (matrix palette size = 50, verts = 5000) to run without getting a noticeable frame rate hit. This has to do with the fact that I am using shader instancing and doing 100 draw methods. I confirmed this by taking out all the animation and update code and only calling draw 100 times every frame. It's possible that my shader is inefficient (the DirectX examples split the shaders up based on influences per vertex), but I don't think it would be that huge of a difference. I don't even know if this would work (and I don't know how I would get it to work with dynamic keyframing), and somehow I doubt that this is how modern games solve this problem. At the moment I am storing the normal for each pixel in world space during the geometry pass. All of my lighting calculations are also being done in world space. The problem I am having is it seems more people seem to do normal mapping in tangent space. In fact I've only ever read 1 article on doing it in anything other than tangent space. To address this problem I was thinking I'll just store all of my normals in tangent space instead of world space when I do the geometry pass. This seemed like an even better idea once I realized I would need the normals in tangent space for parallax occlusion mapping anyway. The problem is when I render my lights as a post process I have to convert them into tangent space as well. Since the tangent space matrix is per-vertex I saw no way of doing this without storing the binormal and tangent for each pixel as well (ack!). My second thought was to simply continue storing normals in world space by multiplying the normal map normals by the inverse of the tangent space matrix. Unfortunately this would be an extremely expensive operation as I would have to calculate the inverse in the pixel shader (unless I am missing something). I am wondering does anyone have any recommendations on this problem or should I start encouraging my art team to produce all of our normal maps in world space P.S.
