Does anyone know of a good freeware or (inexpensive) shareware conversion app that faithfully converts from 3DS to X format

I'm not a modeler, nor can I afford a good modeling program with a plug-in, so a good free utility would rock.

Thanks!

Ethan

Nevermind guys and gals, I remembered that Milkshape3D can do this!

I'm still open for other suggestions if you do know of a better one though.

Thanks,

Ethan

What about the converter in the DirectX SDK

I didn't know that the MeshConvert command line app could accept .3DS files... Can you point me in the right direction

Try :

- Autodesk .fbx plugins/converter (free at their website)

-the x. file exporter from the DirectX SDK (works also with 3DS 8)

-Panda DirectX Exporter

-KW X-Porter (free, search in the XNA GSE Forum for the dl link

As for conversions to FBX with free software (Like Blender which has full Collada support), the best option seems to be to export to Collada and then use the FBX SDK to convert Collada to FBX.

Just a thought

Post Mordem

It seems my personal tool of choice is the GILES editor that you can obtain if you take a C++ and DirectX programming course at GameInstitute.com

I have tons of 3Ds models and it did a great job of loading and exporting them. They look great in XNA!

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

collada

No need to convert to FBX when you have your data in the COLLADA format.

Use the code here (https://collada.org/public_forum/viewforum.php f=13) to load your COLLADA documents directly in XNA.

Yes Collada, I had seen the great work Remi has been doing creating a XNA content processor for COLLADA documents and models.

I knew about the first attempt Remi had at creatig a COLLADA importer but found all the problems Remi described when trying to use it.

I've read the update now on the version 2 (Damn those COLLADA devs are quick!) and it seems a lot better so will try that, shame that it's still not yet able to do annimation yet either, this is a damn shame as it would of solved a lot of peoples problems with annimation code since XNA doesn' do it natively yet (Hay Shawn you got that annimation sample yet ) at the moment thought there is a annimationcompont project on Codeplex that will have to do.

I'm going to keep a keener eye on what Remi is doing in COLLADA dev from now on, he's working pretty fast and I guess he'll sort it out sooner rarther than later which is good with all the help he's getting from Leaf and Abi (great work guys keep it up)
