Also if your program uses Managed DirectX 1.1, then users will need to install .NET 1.1 as well, if they don't already have it. I don't know of any ways around this, but one way to simplify your program's installation is to use ClickOnce deployment, which automatically checks to see if the user has all the required components and downloads them if necessary.     - Shouldn't GameComponents be Disposed in the opposite order they are Initialized? This is a managed code issue and not XNA specific. The garbage collector does not guarantee any particular order for releasing managed resources as far as I know. Finalize and Dispose are not destructors and don't behave at all like C++ destructors. If you need to enforce an order you should manually call Dispose and call GC.SuppressFinalization in Dispose to prevent a second call to it. There is content available at Turbo Squid and there is the Spacewar starter kit right now. There is also a ton of community content and games ready for you to download and play as well. You will also need to buy XNA pro next year so your game can be sold. I have made the common mastake of thinking about bring the game to XBL arcade etc etc and not actualy developing the game. Change the ContentManager to a ResourceContentManager, and you should be good to go.     - Problems with depth-Buffer Z values are not stored in the depth buffer with a linear function. I think it is a 1/Z like function. Anyway, it means that Z precision (the distance in meter between two Z values) is not the same near the camera or far from the camera. That is why you're experimenting that flickering. Also probably, if you move a bit more far, the rendering might flicker again. A way to correct this is to modify near and far values. Indeed, Z precision depends on Zfar / Znear ratio (see projection matrix for more details). I'm usualy try to keep this ratio around 1000, but it really depends on your assets.     - Direct3D 9 -> Strange problem with vertical blank This is because Present returns as soon as the persent operation can be queued up, not when the vertical refresh actually occurs. The frames are queued up in the swap chain, and don't actually hit the screen until the vertical blanking period. DirectX will buffer up to three frames in advance, which helps to keep a stable frame rate despite variations of rendering time per frame, even allowing the occasional frame to take in excess of one refresh period without missing a frame. You numbers are indictive of this behavior. It took the first five frames 52-55 ms to render, during which time two vertical refreshes could have occured. Aren��t you That��s a common problem with using alpha blending. As I see in your picture, you are using Alpha Testing to discard the parts of the texture you don��t want to render. That one is a binary operation, in which pixels are accepted or rejected, basing on a comparing function (>, <, etc). That��s fine and works flawlessly, but you are also using alpha blending to make the borders of the texture smoothly disappear with an alpha gradient. Arent you Whe you use alpha blending, you have to deal with the drawing order, because the blend operation performs a mix up of the color of the pixels that it��s going to render with the previously stored in the frame buffer. That��s why the rendering order matters. To workaround the problem, you can do two things: 1.- Don��t use alpha blending (obviously), only alpha testing, which will produce harder borders. You can improve the result using higher resolution textures. 2.- Ensure that render first every object without transparencies (alpha blending). Then render alpha blended objects, from back to front (first the ones that are farther from the camera). This implies using a sort function based on the distance to the camera. Hope this helps.     - fx include not found - December SDK change I've noticed this as well, I'd be interested to hear from MS on whether it's a bug or feature, too. In the meantime, an alternative to calling SetCurrentDirectory is to change the #include to use the relative path, e.g. #include "subdirectory/include.fxh" Interestingly the D3D10 version of this function still seems to work in the old way. Draw a fullscreen quad or sprite (contents do not matter), with RenderState.SourceBlend = Blend.InvDestColor, and RenderState.DestinationBlend = Blend.Zero. The source code is also included as far as I recall, so you can read through it if you want to know what it does -- but none of the code you have posted actually seems to call it.     - Is it realistic to create one's own engine? I created a game engine that does alot of things with XNA Beta 1. It can do fonts, had a mesh class, a user interface (2D Buttons, was working on 3D Buttons), support for cursors, and tons of other stuff. But in all it still isn't half as good as the TorqueX engine. I also have that Do-It-Yourself impluse in me but I've noticed that it is much harder than I atticipated. First of I would recommend you to program lots of games in C# (I am different though in the sense that almost none of my games are ever finished but I still tackle big problems in each of them and succeed, therefore giving me the experiance). 3D, to me, is like the ultimate frontier. I can do 2D but for 3D I would need alot more math and creative thinking skills to be able to even attempt. So in conclusion to make an engine you need experiance, probably some sort of team, and alot of patience. I soon will probably just purcase an engine like TorqueX because it isn't worth trying to make an engine and spend 1 year or 2 when you can just buy one. But still my engine is very helpful because I still use it for alot of things (AnimatedSprite class, Tileset class, Mouse class, and Keyboard class, these are the most important). Plus I'm a 13 year old and I don't have time to make a highly sophisicated engine. (I can't even spell much less make a revolutionary engine) :). I would also have a look at www.gamedev.net in there visual arts forums, there is an FAQ at the top that lists various resources for artwork and such.
