- 3D Modeling The two free ones that I've liked are blender and wings3d. Of the two, wings3d is probably the simplest - it's focused on modeling. Blender does more (like animation) but some people find the UI hard to grasp. Wings3D exports to fbx now which is useful for XNA. They're free so you can make your own mind up. Cheers, Leaf. - Unable to render mesh I've found the problem, it was in the shader. I had to change this matTotale = matWorld * matView * matProj with this code matTotale = mul(mul(matWorld,matView),matProj) I thought so much yesterday and i found this solution. - XNA GSE Hangs I'm using the Font processor from XNAExtras, but the thing is that it doesn't always take a long time. With a content processor, it should be taking approx the same time with each build right I'm not adding any fonts or anything. Whenever I do, I can see a quick succession of messages saying that each font was built. I'll try excluding those paths from virus scanning. Hopefully I won't need to reinstall GSE. I think if you take a look at our partner, Garage Games, I think they are demonstrating that it can be used for serious gaming :-) It's up to the individual to decide though... - Displaying a Blender x exported model I've been looking into this for some time and the issue is that .x files use and often expect a set number of units per meter (or some other unit of measurement). Belnder has no such standardization in units of measurement, it's been discussed before. I've found that if you think of the smallest blocks as centimeters, that makes the third smallest squares meters and this seems comparable to a model made in gmax with the standard units set to meters. However, when importing my own .x file made in blender into the 3D tutorial for XNA, I found that my .x file looked like a grain of sand. I had to increase scale more than 1000% to see it at all and nearly 5000% to match the size of the ship from the SpaceWar Starter Kit. Interestingly, the game loop seems to dispatch messages for all forms. Unfortunately, the GUI form cannot be added to the game form as a control (like f.Controls.Add(anotherForm) ), so I will have more work to dock the GUI on top of the game form. Any ideas how to do that I remember Win32 had assignable child windows, where you could put an existing window under the control of a parent window, but I could be wrong. - Xbox Live Arcade Title looking for Engine/Coder.. working on an Xbox Live Arcade title Do you already have the publishing agreement in place for this It's pretty hard to get the attention of the Live! Arcade people these days, and just developing a game, hoping you'll be able to publish it, would be pretty risky. For engines, it depends on what your gameplay is. If you can walk around on a flat plane with simple bounding boxes to avoid bumping into trees/buildings, then the physics/collision detection job is pretty simple, and you could roll your own. If it's a physics-based FPS or platformer with rigid body dynamics, the job is a lot harder -- what I'd do (given that there are no 3D physics engines for XNA yet) is look into porting the necessary bits and pieces from some engine available in source. Candidates would be the Open Dynamics Engine (www.ode.org), or the Wild Magic engine (which you need to buy a book to get) by Dave Eberly. Wild Magic has very nicely separated collision functions and physics integration functions which should be easy to re-implement in C#. - Warm Up Contest Is Up Thanks for putting this up ZMan. Not participating in the warm up does not ding you for the next stage. This is an additional round to the precede the main event. There originally was going to be 2 but the way things are looking, we're going to just jump into the main event sooner. As the contest rules state - you have to base your entry on Spacewars in some way. It is meant to be a lighter weight warm up than creating something entirely from scratch. - newbie problem with CreateOrthographicOffCenter I dont think I am quite understanding this, I created the following test to try and get a quad to render in screen space Quad quad = new Quad ( new Vector3 (0, 0, 0), new Vector3 (0, 10, 0), new Vector3 (10, 10, 0), new Vector3 (10, 0, 0)); Matrix matView = Matrix .CreateLookAt( new Vector3 (0, 0, 1), Vector3 .Zero, Vector3 .Up); Matrix matProj = Matrix .CreateOrthographicOffCenter(0, ScreenWidth, 0, ScreenHeight, 0.0f, 1.0f); The quad renders in the bottom left corner of the screen, I want it to render in the top left of the screen, I though maybe flipping the Up Vector so its 0,-1,0 would solve the problem and allow me to draw shapes with the origin being the top left of the screen however no matter what I try I cant get it to work. I think the problem is due to my understanding of CreateOrthographicOffCenter, can somebody explain in newbie terms how I can go about acheiving this. - Is it realistic to create one's own engine? I would think anything that would allow you to build games at a higher level of abstraction would be benificial. I am definetly a newbie when it comes to games programming but I do think what I have learned from building enterprise applications, such as design patterns I have employed in business applications would also transfer across to games. I think it definetly is all about writing reusable components, regardless of wether you dub it an engine or not, its still worthwhile having nice organisation and structure to your code. Though I definetly think its not worth writing an 'Engine' before writing a game, if you are a newbie at this like I am. Make it work, make it right, make it fast is probably also applicable to games programming :) Its definetly worth just getting something going on the screen, brute force programming with a keen will to factorise and optimise as you go along your way. Hi, Is there an application that will allow the artist to convert graphics files to xna format, without the need for GSE Or even with GSE installed, just not having to use the GSE IDE With our previous developments in Java, it was really useful for him to be able to amend graphics then simply replace them in the latest Jar I sent him. - How to save several x files to one x file Look in Managed DirectX docs. Im pretty sure the Mesh class have some methods for saving to x files. (may be those methods are static. not sure right now). - shader 1.1 or higher? Well, to quote Wikipedia: "It should be noted that older versions of the drivers for the GeForce4 Go supported vertex shader model 1.1 via hardware assisted software emulation, however at some point this support was dropped completely. The newer drivers report that they support vertex shader model 0.0. On certain games which are able to take advantage of vertex shading, using the older drivers can actually result in a significant performance increase. Some games that require pixel and vertex shading will not run at all on these newer drivers." ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_4 ) You probably have a later version of the drivers which report that they support shader model 0.0. Thus, XNA complains that it doesn't support a high enough shader model. Unfortunately, because I assume you have a laptop, I guess your only bet would be to obtain older drivers. Try searching the internet for them, or going to one of the sites listed in that Wikipedia article. Hope that helps somewhat! I downloaded XNA today from microsoft after installing the VS 2005 express edition. I then watched a tutorial on how to develop pong and noticed a difference in my IDE. when i go to create a new project, i do not have the option to create "Game(XNA)". Mine says: "Game". the text below the project type window says it's an XNA 1.0 game so i clicked it. I then noticed my default game1.cs class has no designer to it. There is supposed to be an expand option on the class so i can set properties such as height, width, etc. My game1.cs is simply a class with no way to view it in design time. Has anyone else experienced this Thanks.

XNA Studio Projects don't support Form Designers, so you'll have to set the height and width manually.

the tutorial i watcehd from learnxna.com showed the designer though. they were not dragging anything from the toolbox onto the form, but nonetheless, you could see a form, and then they were setting properties in the properties window such as form layout. It was the pong video demonstration that showed this.

Perhaps the tutorial was made with the first Beta release of XNA, as support for designers was removed in the Beta2 release. You can read more about that here:
