is there a way to flash the xbox guide button light (a la when you unlock an achievment) without using messy windows stuff

No; the Xbox guide button and lights are not exposed through XInput. On Windows, you have to go enumerate the USB bus, and find the endpoint, and tweak it yourself, which is something I've never done, because it's annoying, undocumented, and fragile. On Xbox you need the real Xbox development kit.

this is what I figured, but I just wanted to make sure! thanks for the quick repsonse though!

but that stinks... I was planning on having an achievemnt-like system, I guess I'll just have to do without the xbox guide flashing...

What's wrong with just doing the little "Achievement Unlocked" message That's what I'm planning.

well I already have that, I was just hoping to add the little touches of "realism"
