    - Free Roam Camera Problems All right. I'm trying to make a free roam camera. A Camera i can use to inspect my 3d world. So far, in my world, i have a very small sky box, and two even smaller meshes inside of it. Everything is fine except the camera class. Currently the camera is positioned at {0,0,-50} and has a target of {0,0,0}. In the beginning of the app im outside of the skybox looking straight at it, when i press left or right, the box will move to the left of the screen, then to the right, and back. What i want to see is the skybox leaving the screen, then eventually coming back on the other side.     - ContentManager questions about device resets Device lost and device recreated are different things. Automatic pool resources will survive device lost, but need to be recreated any time the device is recreated. Device lost happens in many places: when you change resolution, tab away from a fullscreen app, lock the terminal, etc. Device recreated only happens in extreme circumstances, like dragging a window onto a different monitor (which as far as the driver is concerned might as well be a totally different graphics card so it has to start everything over from scratch).     - Loading Content After Device Reset I exported a new version of the model and I still have the problem. I have figured out some other things though. The normals are not reversed because switching to CullMode.None does not help at all. So it seems like it almost isn't loading the whole mesh until I reset the device. Again, I'm running the same loading code so I have no idea why that'd be. Also I'm not actually reloading the model because during the device reset, loadAllContent is false so the model remains from the first load. Something about resetting the device is messing with my model though. Another thing I've found is that it seems like my coordinate system is changing (and probably the culprit). My bullets are all drawn at 1 unit on the Y axis. When the game first loads, the model is drawn incorrectly and the bullets are drawn underneath the ground. Upon resetting the device, the model is drawn correctly and the bullets are drawn on above the ground. This is quite a glitch and I'm figuring it's something I did, but I have no idea. I get the error message "No force feedback device is found". The C++ sample works fine.     - The Quest to understand BasicEffect continues... Hello all, I'm starting to get to grips with the structure of things, but through all the code I've looked at, all the tutorials etc etc, I'm still not clear on a few things. I've searched these forums pretty exhaustively, but I'll issue the obligatory pre-emptive apology if I've missed something obvious. Now, to start with, I believe I'm correct in saying that camera position must be set via the view and projection matrices of an effect. Let's take the case of BasicEffect. You get yourself a new BasicEffect, and then you set some nice view/projection matrices. Stick some variables in there and update it and you've got yourself a moving camera, more or less. So far, so good. Let's say you have a couple of different classes for your own primitive obects. A cube and a sphere. Standard stuff, you might have a class for the objects themselves, and a manager class for handling multiples of these objects. Now, each of these manager classes (CubeManager and SphereManager) have been given their own Draw() methods, which render their cubes and spheres from a list. All very standard. What I find slightly puzzling is what exactly is the correct use of BasicEffect here. Now, my camera information is stored in the view and projection matrices of my basiceffect. Does this mean you must always use this basiceffect instance in all your draw loops of your various objects How would you accomplish different graphical effects for different objects Using different techniques in different object draw loops Secondly, although both are possible, do people generally do the effectpasses at the CubeManager/SphereManager end, and just have a simple CubeManager.Draw(cubeList) call in your main game draw loop Or do you have an effectpass loop in your main game class Draw() method I suppose it doesn't really matter... Finally, onto custom effects, I've seen examples of code where there's a number of different .fx files in use. I'm steering clear of HLSL until I've nailed the basics, but I'm curious as to what is normally done. Multiple .fx files, one each for different objects How is camera position kept constant throughout Bit of a ramble, this post. I think the problem is that there's something of a gap in the tutorials I've found. Coverage of basicEffect tends to be, well, basic. People tend to move on to simple custom effects for rendering even relatively simple objects. Any answers/hints/tips or handy links would be much appreciated. Thanks all.     - What tools do I need to write sprite-based games? Yes, you can create a full 2D sprite-based game for Windows with the tools you listed off. Visual C# Express + XNA Game Studio Express will pretty much cover all the coding you would need to do. It is possible to construct an entire 2D game using just this combination. (you can use XNA's 3D drawing routines to create 2D elements based on vectors and shaders, so it isn't actually necessary to use images) If you want to base your game on 2D image sprites, no problem. XNA Game Studio has very good support for 2D sprite drawing and animation. XNA also provides full access to the standard keyboard and mouse. (as well as full support for the 360 controller used with Windows) And any XNA game made for Windows can be commercially distributed without paying any royalties. Blender is a very solid program. (especially for an open-source project) I've been using it to model for years now. And yes, you can create whatever sprites you want with it. You will probably want to have a scene with a pre-positioned camera for taking shots of your models from directly above. It isn't required that you set your camera to orthographic (as opposed to perspective) but I'd recommend it. Also, I would seriously advise that you switch off anti-aliasing when you render your sprites. I find that having crisp edges for sprites tends to look better. Of course, that's just my opinion. If you prefer to have a softer edge to your sprites, you can crank anti-aliasing all the way up if you want. And don't forget to select the RGBA option when you pick your file format. (I'd advise rendering your sprites as TGA files initially) If you just render them as RGB, you'll lose that wonderful alpha channel. Blender fully supports alpha channels, and will render out the visibility layer for your sprites for you. Thanks to that wonderful feature, you won't have to worry about firing up your sprites in Photoshop. So...yes. Those two program packages (both free) are all you need to construct a full commercially viable 2D game. Well, that...and a *** load of time, effort, and expertise. When you are reporting you need do have a global variable to increment wverytime it goes into the update as it will only report the last time it was in the update.     - Select a mesh im trying to create a scene editor like app for my engine. In my mesh class, i have a boolean variable called "Selected". It determines if the mesh is selected. So does anybody know how to determine the coordinates of the mouse. And , Determine a bounding rectangle on the part of a mesh viewable.     - Collision Detection With Bezier Curves As I was saying a bouncing algorithm wouldn't be difficult to implement, I created one that could work: (lineNormal - playerDirection) * 2 + playerDirection With lineNormal being the normal of the terrain line. So I don't think bouncing is too much of an issue. What my problem is is that the only way to tell if the player has collided is to test for line intersection between the player and the terrain. But by the time an intersection happens, the player has penetrated the terrain. Before I draw the position of the player on the screen I need to calculate where the player should be so it looks like they never penetrated the terrain. Then after I have corrected the position of the player I can bounce them off the terrain. I'm not sure of an algorithm to calculate this new position.     - Sprite animation Let me start off by saying that I ALREADY KNOW how to animate sprites. I think the way I've been doing my animation, though, isn't really recommended as it can cause hiccups. Here's what I've been doing: I've got a sprite class. This class has a DateTime member called startTime. It also has a TimeSpan member called timePassed. In my constructor I have the following bit of code at the very end: public Sprite() { ... DateTime startTime = DateTime.Now; } which sets the initial point of reference for the sprite. I've also got an UpdateFrame function that basically checks the current time, sees if enough milliseconds have passed, and either exits or changes the frame of the sprite: //this will check to see if it's time to change the animation frame. private void UpdateFrame() { timePassed = DateTime.Now - startTime; int totalMilliseconds = timePassed.Milliseconds; if (totalMilliseconds >= 250) { frame++; frame = frame % 4; //keep it within the 4 frame boundry of this sprite startTime = DateTime.Now; } } Now I know this works. It works well. The thing is, I think it might work better for me if I use the current gameTime and such. Doing it this way seems like it's more along the lines of what's expected with XNA. Can someone perhaps tell me if they way I'm doing it is fine, or perhaps show me a quick example using GameTime instead I was thinking I could use the GameTime object to return the total time since start up, and use that as my reference check point. (No loading content) This error message means that you have not set an effect before drawing your vertex buffer and index buffer, or that the effect that is set does not contain a valid vertex shader or pixel shader.     - Color Banding First, thanks for the replys on this issue. I double checked to make sure, but yes both the projects are using the same texture importer/processor and there is no compression being used on the textures. I tried setting the PreferredBackBufferFormat to what you said, but RGB32 isn't supported apparently. I get a run-time error saying it isn't a valid value =/ I tried BGR32, which ran without a run-time error, but this didn't make any difference. I tried most all of the other SurfaceFormat values also. They either crashed with similar run-time errors or just didn't make any visual difference. The only one that seemed to make a difference was 'BGRA1010102'. However, the results where not desireable, as would probably be expected. I use Milkshape 3d (http://chumbalum.swissquake.ch/) for model editing. It's pretty easy to use, and only $30. I use LithUnwrap (http://files.seriouszone.com/download.php fileid=198) to edit the UV maps. It's a bit more difficult to use but it's free. I also use Photoshop and Paintshop Pro to make my textures.
