    - 3D Playing Cards ? I don't think this answered the question asked. The question is would you have 52 models that include texture definitions, or would you "skin" the model with a different face texture based on its value and store the textures separately associating them programmatically with the card at run time I'm interested in opinions on this as well, it may be easier programmatically to create 52 separate models in a modeling program, but there is so much that is duplicated. I'm leaning toward programmatically adding the textures, because then you could also have different faces and backs available to the player, where if they are static in the models there is much less flexibility. If someone comes up with a good 3D card rendering engine for XNA, please let me know, one project I have wanted to work on is a card game engine which would make it easy to implement card games and solitaire games.     - Video/Animation Playback Creating textures for each frame isn't probably the most efficient way, for two reasons: Creating and destroying GPU resources is pretty slow. This is the kind of thing you really want to be doing just once in an initialize function, rather than inside your rendering loop. Loading textures using FromFile means you aren't going to be getting much in the way of data compression. This may be fine if your animation is very low resolution, but for decent quality video, uncompressed format is going to take so much space, the hard drive may well not be able to keep up with the transfer rate this is requiring! To fix the first problem, a typical approach would be to create probably three textures using the Dynamic usage flag in your initialize function. Then you cycle between them. Each time you want to render a frame, pick the next texture from your list of three, call SetData on it to fill it with a new frame of image data, then use it to render, and rotate the list so you get a different texture on the next frame. The reason to have three textures rather than just one is that the GPU renders asynchronously with the CPU, so if you called SetData immediately the next frame on the same texture you just used, the CPU would have to stall until the GPU was finished rendering out of that texture. Using three in rotation gives the GPU time to have finished rendering the previous frames before the CPU tries to stuff new data into each texture. To reduce the amount of bandwidth you are using (assuming this turns out to be a problem), you will need to do some kind of video compression. That's not an area I know much about though!     - TitleLocation writeable on the 360? If you don't get an answer on this in a couple hours, I'm going to try to run some StorageContainer/StorageDevice tests on my 360 tonight. I have an old tutorial that I want to test out now that we have 360 access. I'm not going to try to push 2GB of data though.     - Select a mesh im trying to create a scene editor like app for my engine. In my mesh class, i have a boolean variable called "Selected". It determines if the mesh is selected. So does anybody know how to determine the coordinates of the mouse. And , Determine a bounding rectangle on the part of a mesh viewable.     - Bounding Box Not Rotating Correctly The XNA bounding box is axis aligned. That means it will never be rotated and so when you "rotate" it, you just get a larger box needed to encompass the entire model.     - General strategy question about XNA 1) The FAQ seems to be positioning XNA (GSE, GS Pro, Studio, Framework) as a series of tools that allow easier access to rich content from creation sources into a game; the examples one of the FAQ sections used referenced sound as an example; I'll admit that 'middleware' was probably too broad a brush stroke, but XNA does seem to do more than a 3D API... 2) I'm not saying it's a bad thing; I think it's great. It still makes no sense why Microsoft would do it; I don't believe it's a gift from the company to it's fans, and I really can't see a long-term benefit from it (again, why not work on improving Direct X, instead of trying to create a new framework/API ).     - Scaling Sprites?(XNA) Would anyone be able to explain how I should be using the SpriteBatch.Draw overload functions to properly scale textures I'm a little confused about how to pass the parameters using the overloads and I think it may have to do with the way I've implemented my sprites. For the code below I am applying a texture that measures 100pix by 100pix to an object that is instantiated at 50pix by 50pix as defined by its class. I would like to scale the texture so it fits the 50x50 object.     - Connecting XNA to Xbox 360 I can connect to xbox live because with that I just connect directly to the modem but with XNA I am trying to connect to the PC and it just won't assign an IP address. I also cannot connect to the PC using the windows connect thing either. When I run the diagnostic it gives me the error I have in my first post.     - Managed DirectX vs Native DirectX performance I seem to remember the stated aims were to have MDX within 97% of native performance measured on a call-for-call basis. As far as I'm aware they achieved this goal, but its often misunderstood as it measures the API access and doesn't factor in any differences between C++ and C# (or native versus .NET) - that's a whole different topic I originally started writing DirectX code using VB6 and unofficial type-libraries (before moving on to the official ones - the precursors to MDX) and with a little effort it was perfectly possible to write applications with similar capabilities to C++ authored ones. Your architecture and algorithm design are going to have a MUCH higher impact on performance than your language of choice. 2D graphics, despite having the easier concept are often easier to write badly. I've seen a lot of threads on these and other forums over the years that make me cringe - 1000's of draw calls per frame, one texture per tile, CPU transforms etc....     - JIT register allocation and bounds checking Ryan, I'm pretty sure you don't! Fact is that only the VM guys could possibly know the answer. 2/ Array bounds checks are often hoisted out of a loop on the desktop VM, so that the array bound checks can be skipped within the loop. 3/ Unsafe code is fine on the XBox. Yes you should wait until you know where the bottlenecks are, but hey - might it just be possible I have written something like this before I'm doing some pretty complex physics, and trust me, stalling the CPU pipeline will kill performance on the 360 CPU. Thats why transforming a vector via a 4x4 matrix takes 5x longer on the XBox than on the PC, unless you deal with it, and why I need answers to these questions.     - Can I write 3D games in XNA? It's no lark in the daisies...but yes, its entirely possible. When you go 3D, the complexity of the game you're producing automatically ramps up. 3D collision detection is much more complex than 2D. 3D movement and animation is more complex than 2D. etc... If you want to produce a 3D game, it will be quite a bit more challenging. However, XNA does offer all the tools that you would need to make it happen. It supports the native loading of 3D models and animations. (a big plus) It has the structures necessary for storing 3D related information easily. (learn to love Vector3, it's your new best friend) If you're serious about producing a 3D title, everything is here. Just roll up your sleeves. I created a DrawableGameComponent called Sprite, which adds itself to the game.Components on it's instantiation. I have installed XNA on Windows Vista Ultimate and the templates aren't showing up in Visual C#. I know that they are installed because I've located them in the XNA Directory however they aren't showing up.

This is a common problem, and you need to make sure you have installed it on Vista in the correct way.

Need to run a command prompmt under admin and runn all installs from there.

Install VS C# Express
Install VS C# Express Service Pack 1
Install the VS Service Pack 1 update for Vista
Install The XNA and GSE Systems.

This should get you going, as It has work several times for me and others.
