I am trying out HLSL shader debugging in PIX (December 2006 SDK) but I cant get into vertex shader debugging mode. I'm using the C++/DX9 Samples that ships with the SDK. My repro case:
- Compile any sample in debug mode with DEBUG_VS defined for the preprocessor (I tried Anitalias, BasicHLSL, and HDRLighting)
- Start PIX
- Load the debug executable in PIX experiment (F12 mode)
- Frame capture of the app
- Go to any draw call in PIX
- Select a vertex and choose debug vertex (you can also go via pixel debugging path)
- I get "An error occurred while preparing to debug the shader"
Are my UI steps okay

There is a new version of PIX out today in the April 2007 SDK - try that and see if this crash is fixed. If not reply and we will get someoen from the PIX team to look at the issue. You will need to provide a repro case.

Creating the device for software vertex processing fixed the issue for me.
