Hi All,

I've done some trauling through the web for some DirectPlay material and this subject is neither here nor there. Can anyone recommend a good book or reference for this API as I cannot find a thing. If there is not a Managed book about a C++ based book would be acceptable.

TIA

You probably can't find any books about DirectPlay because it is obsolete. Microsoft has deprecated it and may remove it from future versions of DirectX. You should use Windows Sockets instead.

You can find samples and such in the older versions of the SDK, I would sugest to have a look at them.. You might want to try the dec 2003 sdk. Also the Managed DirectX Kick Start book (by Tom Miller) has some chapters on it that you can lern a lot from.

I also released a chat program on www.gotdotnet.com in the users samples a while back. But my suggestion is to move into the System.net classes and design your own layer. Hae a look at www.codeproject.com for samples of networking classes.

Hi Guys,

Thank you very much for your replies.

Hmm, didn't look into this enough obviously. I did hear mixed views about DirectPlay, I was hoping it was more than just a networking API and more of a set of framework classes specifically for network gaming models. Oh well, I'm happy with the socket route and I will check out the stuff on GotDotNet and CodeProject.

In light of this though, are there any decent books on Socket programming techniques for games i.e. Peer 2 Peer, Host Server etc. I've purchased the .NET kick start book as you recommended but I'm now worried about learning an obsolete technology in terms of DirectPlay. I was hoping this purchase was going to keep me as up to date as I could possibly be with a book. JFMI, what was the last version of DirectPlay and when did MS make this decision Are there any brief roadmaps for DirectX on MSDN

Many Thanks

From memory I think it was oct 2003 that it was dropped... I will have to check that, but I know it was a while ago :)
