i know it's not supported ... but has anybody got it to work

bought the club account on the 360 and downloaded the app on the 360.

installed Express on Vista with no problems and registered. tried an update, but didn't see any service packs.

then i installed GSE, which complained about the VS projects, but it still seemed to install. fired up Express and the XBox 360 Starter kit project was there and built fine. went to tools options, and setup the connection to the 360. then i set the 360 to listening mode.

but when i try to deploy, it just comes back and says make sure the the 360 is listening. also, turned off the vista firewall but got the same results.

any ideas

Thanks, casey

Only Windows XPSP2 is supported.

It's in the readme: http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx/XNA/gse/readme/default.aspx

Hello Dave,

yep, i read that and the FAQ ... but i don't care about it not being 'officially' supported on Vista.

i'm asking if anybody else has gotten it to work on Vista, and if there's a workaround.

Thanks, casey

By the way, Casey, my apologies for being overly brief in that last reply...I've been under some colossal stress lately (I wonder why :). "Hi Casey!"

ok, to answer your question: I have it working on my system, but it's been some time since I did the installation. I defintely don't remember having to fiddle with the firewall. Can we ask what kind of router you're using Can you ping your 360 from your Windows box

Dave, great to hear from you and that it is working on your system!

so it's probably just a deployment issue. will troubleshoot this evening, and watch what happens on this thread : http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=1007412&SiteID=1

would assume its ping-able because the 360 has been used as a media center extender for the Vista PC i tried to deploy from.

BTW the router i'm using is a Netgear RangeMax NEXT - Gigabit, and both 360 and PC are connected using NetGear HDXB101 powerline over ethernet adapters. this setup has been pretty reliable from media extender sessions.

Thanks, casey

Well, the good news is that the Media Center Extension works -- that's the best "first" thing to test, since it verifies that your Xbox and PC are talking to each other. You might want to also try regenerating a key on the 360, then create a new connection from the PC.

What I find funny, yet I understand the Consumer Release concept about not being compatable, but to me that seams to be a cop out.

I'm thinking the staged release is just so that MS can say we relased it in 2006 (with out support, shhh) but it was not officialy supported until 2007. Am I to understand that all the developers out there use a Home version of the OS to develope on and not the Professional one. I was quite disappointed when VS 2005 complained, then VS 2005 Express, Live OneCare, and now XNA. Is there any thing out there that supports the Vista that was released in 2006 Does MS support anything for Vista that was released this year or does all that come next month Is there any supprot for the Vista that was released is 2006 We wait 'till 2007 or is it all hog wash and will have to hope that Januarary 30th is when all the software will magically work with all version of Vista and MS will support it all, not somethign here and other things there and somethings not until the 30th and maybe not even then Clearity please.

Is the update going to be for Vista, XNA Studio Express, and/or Visuals Studio 2005 Express or all of them

This just adds more to being an early adopter I guess.

Doh!  It seems I'm not able to even install GSE on my home machine (Vista x64) =/  The failure seems to happen during the "registering project templates" portion of setup, which looks to be just about the last step.  Unfortunately it then rolls back the entire installation.

Anyone else gotten that to work or will I have to stick to developing from 32-bit OSes

Is your 360 connected to the PC via Wireless   I don't know if this is the problem, but I seem to remember a comment in one of the Channel 9 videos that the GSE-to-Xbox connection was not allowed to be wireless... would only work with a wired connection. I don't know if this restriction made its way into the final 1.0 release or not.

I use my 360 as a Media Center Extender for a Vista Ultimate box as well... and it's gonna be a major pain in the butt to drag a CAT6 cable all over the house to upload my games if wireless is still a limitation.

Matt

[Edit:  Sorry, just re-read your postings a bit more closely. I'm wondering if the system is somehow detecting the Ethernet-over-power as wireless (or, rather, "not conventional wired network") ]

Re: XNA Game Studio Express GSE RTM on Vista RTM (unsupported)

mine is wired over powerlines ... so better than wireless, but not quite as good as full wired. this post (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=998812&SiteID=1) actually says that wireless should work if you have a good connection.

from the other deployment problem post, i'm betting my problem is that the generated key isn't entered correctly. i assumed that the options menu would complain if the key wasn't perfect ... and i wasnt 100% positivie if one letter was a 0 or O.

Thanks, casey

I had the same problem with it rolling back. I managed to get it working by applying the Beta SP's for Visual Studio and Visual C# Express edition. All works fine now on Vista.

took 4 tries, but it finally synced on the 4th try of generating the key.

Thanks, casey
