    - HLSL Shader debugging in PIX I am trying out HLSL shader debugging in PIX (December 2006 SDK) but I cant get into vertex shader debugging mode. I'm using the C++/DX9 Samples that ships with the SDK. My repro case: - Compile any sample in debug mode with DEBUG_VS defined for the preprocessor (I tried Anitalias, BasicHLSL, and HDRLighting) - Start PIX - Load the debug executable in PIX experiment (F12 mode) - Frame capture of the app - Go to any draw call in PIX - Select a vertex and choose debug vertex (you can also go via pixel debugging path) - I get "An error occurred while preparing to debug the shader" Are my UI steps okay Thanks.     - 4.5s of overhead when pixel shaders are set I'm getting a 4.5 seconds long freeze when a series of pixel shaders are used for the first time. When all of the 500 effects of my test case select a different PS, the application freezes 4.5 seconds and then continues. The overhead appears when DrawIndexedPrimitive or SetPixelShaderConstantF are called. - I'm not using the multithread flag - I'm not getting any errors or warning msg - no help from PIX - Shaders are compiled when the data is packaged at export time, no compilation at run-time. - The PS & VS are created at load time, not when needed So I tried a simpler test case: All PS are returning a random value -> the app freezes for ~1.5 seconds and the overhead occurs in DrawIndexedPrimitive. float4 Main( ) : COLOR0 { float4 returnv = float4(0,0,0,0); returnv.b += 0.909146; <- random value for each PS return returnv; } The VS is equaly simple and only outputs the projected position. any help greatly appreciated. thanks!     - I need to Load my own graphics format file --> Custom Importer I need to Load into the content manager my own graphics format file, i already have the libraries to load this file and extracting it into a Bitmap Array , but i don't have any idea about how i can allow the content manager to load this info.     - Drawing on texture Hi :) Background: I have a very large 2D (tile-based) game map that I want to represent in a smaller window when the user hits a key. What I plan to do is create a small texture representation of that map when it is initially loaded and then display it when necessary. This texture would be a 512x512 pixel grid of which I need to colorize/set about 20% of the pixels at runtime. Question: Can someone please explain how to draw individual colored pixels directly on a Texture2D texture The XNA help on using SetData<T> is scarce at best and I'm unsure of what type of info to pass into it.     - PIX and "An error occured while preparing to debug the shader" Hi, I am trying to debug my project using shader debugging in PIX ( yes I compiled the HLSL effect file with debugging support ), and getting this error message. Sometimes it can debug, sometimes it cant, I couldn't find what is wrong. VS2003 uses the DXDebuggingService, when I try to debug the project, PIX can stop the service (I can do it by hand also) so the problem is not related to this service. I have tried both the VS2003 and VS2005 compiled projects.     - Newb question: different textures for different resolutions? Hi there, I've made a couple of games in GSE now, and in each case I programmed the game in 800 x 600, which is rather silly given that I have a monitor that supports resolutions all the way up to 2560x1600. I understand that I can get the user's window size and adjust my game to fit it at startup, though I haven't really played with that yet. But what about textures Is the best practice to include one texture for "maximum" resolution and then let Windows scale it down to size depending on the user's window size Or do developers include several copies of the same texture for different resolutions Likewise, I'm wondering how to handle different aspect ratios. To release a game that supports both 4:3 and "widescreen" modes, presumably one has to include art assets that come in those different shapes Or not Many thanks for any general advice on this. It strikes me as the sort of thing I'd better sort out before I get too far into making textures for a game that I want to support multiple resolutions and aspect ratios. What it does is that in debug mode it draws an ellipse (in fullscreen) and if I run it as an executible it draws a circle.     - The Content Pipeline and my Scene Graph I implemented a scene graph. Items in the graph are of type Entity. StaticVisual, a subclass of Entity, takes a Model as a constructor parameter. Using the content pipeline and contentManager.Load<Model>("assetName") things seem to be working smoothly. Now, I want to extend the content pipeline to have complete scenes be content. I'm not sure how to do this without writing a ton of redundant and error prone code... My idea is to write a Model Processor and look at the node's names in order to decide which types of Entities to instantiate. I'd modify my StaticVisual class to take a ModelMesh (or a ModelMeshPart ) as a parameter and in theory I could construct a whole scene graph. I'd like to write single generic pair of EntityReader and EntityWriter classes, but I don't have a run-time Model to pass to my StaticVisual class. It looks like I will I have to write a Content class and a ContentReader/Writer for every single type of Entity. Is this correct I noticed the ContentSerializer attribute, but I can't find the documentation on it. Will that help me at all Thanks!     - A struct / types what ever you call em in C#! I am creating a space shooter game. So far you have a ship that moves, and a Scrolling bg. Exciting Isn’t it. I used to program in blitz basic and they had a thing called a type that could create multiple objects with multiple similar variables.     - Compile in Release I am in a huge rush right now. Between VS2003 and VS2005 they moved where you choose whether you compile in Debug or Release mode. Where is it now I have manually added the drop-down box to the tool bar, but it's grayed out. This is extremely frustrating and critical to testing DirectX stuff.     - XACT - System.TypeInitializationException on start-up Anyone else seen this problem starting up XACT It worked in the past but I haven't used it for a few weeks. In the interim, I've installed the Vista SDK, .NET Framework 3.0, WF and WCF extensions for Visual Studio etc. I've uninstalled all these components and reinstalled GSE and Visual Studio Express but still get the same exception on start-up. In the debugger, I see Additional Information: System.Net.Dns threw an exception. I built a quick program to check I could use this class and it worked OK.     - Custom blending I need an alpha blend, which blends the alpha as well. I need this on systems which might not have seperate alpha blend, so I was considering doing it in a pixel shader. It would be easy to put the blend into ordinary code, but... I can not, as far as I know, do any blending in the shader. When rendering primitive n I want to blend with primitive n-1 which has been rendered, but in the shader I have no access to the pixels generated by earlier primitives. Is the solution to render a primitive (back to front) to a full screen texture and then use that as a reference when rendering the next primitive Should I expect a large overhead from all that texture switching Actually there will be very few primitives. Probably never more than a houndred. My real bottleneck is to read the final result back into system memory and feed it to another video output, but the textures used in the blending would always reside on the graphics card I assume, so there will be no extra writing and readback over the bus. Is this the way to do it and are my assumptions correct As an extra question... IF I have seperate alpha blend, what would be a good blend to get an alpha which is the combination of the primitives in such a way that is a0=0.5 and a1=0.5 then the combination will be 0.75. This is to represent two half transparent objects on top of each other blocking out light from behind the scene (deeper info the screen).     - Single Solution - Multiple Project configuration help I've done some looking around, here and through google, and I still can't seem to fix my problem. I wanted to make a single solution, which contained two project...each project was identical except one was targeted towards windows while the other was targeted to the 360. I can't get this to work, as sometimes my project will build and debug on windows, and sometimes it will build and deploy to the 360. Most of the time though, it just builds and gives me a 360 connection time-out message or just does nothing at all. I've been looking at the solution properties, and it seems feasible to set up GSE to have one solution, with two projects each targeted to different platforms, with the user able to pick which platform to build and debug before hitting the F5 key. Anybody get this working I'm running through the help and the web, and either I can't find the needed info or the info is too vague.     - best methods for scene management... Hey guys, im trying to do some research for my new project but I have been out of the graphics loop for some time now (just been using ogre3d for rendering lately). Anyway, it seems as though the bsp method is still widely used, even by Epic's latest Unreal 3 engine. From what I can tell, they use a standard bsp map for the most basic geometry and some other technique for the more complex decorative static geometry (progressive mesh + occlusion culling ). What I need is a method that will work well with a large city structure (one solid piece of geometry) and with height maps simultaneously... my brain is a bit broken at the moment (it's 4:14 am where I am...) if anyone can get my head going in the rite direction, I would appreciate it.     - I cannot compile any XNA tutorials I have Microsoft Visual C# express and XNA Game Studio Express, but when I create a new project and follow the tutorial (any tutorial) and copy and paste the code into a new project, i cannot compile because there are errors when i press F5.     - rotating in degrees I'm not very old and haven't learnt phisics or radians so how could i convert degrees in to radians so i can just use degrees to rotate my sprites. Hullo all, I bumped this thread: https://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=1028285&SiteID=1 As I had a problem creating my own ContentManager, but I've since worked out the reasno I was having this issue, but not a solution. the problem seems to be ( GraphicsDevice component not found.exception) that the ContentManager wants a GraphicsDeviceManager registered as a service, and not a GraphicsDevice afterall, despite what the exception says. However, since GraphicsDeviceManager accepts a Game in its constructor only, and I haven't got one (I'm trying to get XNA running in WinForms) I'm not sure how, if at all, it is possible to get the ContentManager to work with a GraphicsDevice object that hasn't been created by a GraphicsDeviceManager inside a Game . Given I'm trying to get the ContentManager working with WinForms, this is a must for me... since if I call Game.Run it eats up the calling thread, I can't use a Game and WinForms concurrently it seems :( Any help would be much appreciated!     - Getting multiple errors back from the effect compiler? I'm using the effect compiler (specifically the Effect.CompileEffectFromSource method) to compile effects on the fly, and was wondering if anyone knew a trick to getting more than just the first error back. It's kind of annoying to not get them all back at once, but I'm not seeing a way (via CompilerOptions) to have it continue. I'm worried I'll have to build my own yaccer :( And as a sneak peek, here is a screenshot of an early build of the tool I'm writing - it's a minimally invasive drop in shader editor (requires about 4 lines of code in the host project to set up - maybe less if I create a GameComponent wrapper).     - Rants on XNA 1.0 This is my first reaction when I installed and tried the 1.0 of XNA. To summarize my feeling: it's still 95% for XBox and no nearer to replace the old MDX 1.0. So I decided not to migrate from MDX to XNA though I want to do that very much. I feel like MDX 2 more; amen to MDX 2. The hardest issue for me is the content pipeline, which is very necessary, but the workflow is fixed and it assumes the contents are only built before the program runs. The helper functions wrapping D3DX can only be used with types in the content pipeline. I have to utilize the full content pipeline just for generating something dynamically, of course with significant performance cost. Or I have to write those D3DX utilities my self. Currently I don't have a good idea on this. The other annoying thing is about type names. When using XNA with WinForms, the Point, Rectangle, Color, etc. are all need to be fully qualified in many source files. Those clones in XNA are in the same namespace with other XNA types. I don't want to import those types but I have no way to avoid them. Another is about types in Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Game.dll. They're mixed with basic types in the Microsoft.Xna.Framework namespace. So if only one source file used any of those game types, that assembly has to be referenced, thus those type names are occupied and I have to avoid those names. Why not let them in their own Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Game namespace Well, since it already released, it will mostly stay like this. Or maybe it's just "You cannot count on the first release of any software." That's all my rants.     - Just saying Hi Hi! I have wanted to make a game for some time now... and I never really wanted to put much time into it until now. I have the whole game drawn out on paper (classes, skills, the way the networking works) but never got around to implementing it. I have been playing with this XNA GSE and have a car that I can drive around a track. Hopefully I will have more soon. I would like to "build up" to my main goal which is the game I was talking about before, but that includes animation which I am waiting for a nice example/tutorial for.
